I love that you talk about this important topic. Mary, queen of Scots should be remembered as a victim of physical abuse and sexual abuse, and not as someone who was only lusting after the English throne. I find it very tragic what those men did to her and how they used her, but I find her very brave for not giving her power away even if she had to suffer for it. I learned more about her in this video. Thank you so much for this wonderful video🌹Mary deserved better😔

Mary died solely for her Catholic Faith as she correctly stated at her execution. She will be in Heaven because of that. She came back from France at 18 yrs old completely unused to the Protestant mindset. Having swallowed so many lies about the Catholic faith since the Reformation the majority of people were like rabbit dogs towards Mary. There is no way she could have engaged in a plot from her prison. It was a complete set - up to have her executed. How outrageous to remove her child from her and have him indoctrinated into Protestant beliefs. Only a fellow Catholic can understand Mary but the history has been written by anti - Catholics.

@@helenuk386 perhaps you are right! It could not have been possible that Mary was engaged in a plot while she was in prison if you think about it🤔 It all had to do with her religion, but if that's true I would find that very cruel and unfair for her!😔 She had to go through so much her life and then she was set up by her rivals and got accused of plotting against queen Elizabeth! When trying to decide why someone of Mary's intellect and background could marry Dsrnley, we have to remember it was 16th century Europe. Marriages at that level of society were done for dynastic and political reasons. Darnley was the best match for Mary in the dynastic sense. He like Mary was a Stewart, thus ensuring the Scots Crown would remain with the Stewarts. He had the second strongest claim to the English throne after Mary. Their heirs would have an unassailable claim to the English Crown. He was catholic,very important ss Mary was a devout catholic. He was physically very attractive. There is no doubt Mary loved him and only found out what a truly venal character he was when it was too late. He too was playing the dynastic game and hid his true nature from Mary. Bothwell did rape her. She was seen bare-breasted,, distraught and dishevelled at a window shouting for help. Her detractors claimed it was an act. It was however an unthinkable and humilliating thing for someone of Mary's rank and religious convictions to do if it were not in earnest and in utter desperation.>. When she went to her judicial murder, she insisted at least one ofher ladies be present lest one of the men present lifted up her skirt after her death. Throughout her captivity in England, Mary barely if ever mentioned Bothwell. A ruthless, nasty abitious dynast piece of work if ever there was one, and who had he got away with it would have killed Mary's son, James, to ensure his line succeeded to both thrones.

She did lead a sad life. I think being made Queen so young, right away she was ruled over by others...men who used her before she was strong enough to stand for herself and know how to make good decisions. To be honest, I don't think given the times she lived in...she didn't stand much of a chance. Her cousin Elizabeth suffered too at the hands of the men around her, and we know that she didn't marry to keep the men at bay and reserve what she had managed to gain.

Elizabeth 1st REALLY didn't want to execute her. It was recored that she paced back and forth screaming erratically at her servants and all in her path. 3 times she signed the death warrant and 3 times she recalled it. She fell into a deep melancholy after Mary's execution that lasted for several days. She must have felt completely alone in the world after that.

She certainly knew the horror of being used Politically, not knowing if you were going to die the next day and of course, her own mother. Yet her cousin asks for Sanctuary, she doesn't even bother meeting her (which I find astonishing) and signs a death warrant?! If a Monarch did that today, we'd all be shouting, "Did she lose her mind?"

You are not being fair. Mary claimed the throne of England was rightfully hers from the beginning. By claiming that she is also supporting the Catholic idea that Elizabeth was an illegitimate daughter of Henry VIII and Queen, not only that she made her self a symbol for all insurgent Catholics to rally behind. This claim was a real threat, the Pope had already decreed that any Catholic that killed Elizabeth would be rewarded by god and Mary made herself the replacement. There was no reason for Elizabeth to aid someone that claimed throne was not rightfully hers. Yes they were cousins but that really didn’t mean anything Elizabeth already had one cousin scheme against her Elizabeth like so many others also advised against the marriage to Stuart but Mary ignored them all . I feel bad for Mary she suffered immensely in Scotland but she also made horrible political choices, ignored her advisors and was ill equipped to rule. The question you should be asking is why would Mary lay claim to her cousins throne?

Agreed. She was the Dowager Queen of France, a Catholic country. She had a pension from France, she owned property there, and she had a contract allowing her to live there. But Mary deluded herself into believing she could charm Elizabeth into sending an army against Scotland, England's most important Protestant ally.

All of Mary's troubles stemmed from her mother. If her mother had not sent her to France, then agreed for Mary to marry the King of France's son. She would have paid more attention to what was happening in Scotland, like how they preferred the Protestant religion to the Catholic church. If kept informed about what was going on she would have known how to deal with it. If she had not rushed into the marriage with Darnley she would have known it would not have worked. But he was young and good looking and that's all she was seeing. And I'm sorry, I do believe that there was something going on between Mary and Rizzio. If you look at the paintings of Rizzio and of James the VI of Scotland and first of England. He looks very much like Rizzio and nothing like Mary or Darnley. And she should have gone to Spain when she escaped Scotland. She knew Elizabeth would not allow her freedom any more than Mary de Medici would if she went to France. Spain she would have been treated as the Queen she was. But then they had nothing against her. She was spoilt rotten while in France, she let her heart rule when in Scotland and made a total mess of her life. They could have protected her as a child in Scotland, hidden her from Henry VIII, so I blame her mother for sending her to France where she was educated and taught French ways that did not prepare her to be a proper Queen of Scotland.
@aimeefriedman8222 жыл бұрын
I'm going to say her mother was desperate to secure France, by sending Mary there so young. After all, kids were betrothed all the time for an alliance and later broken in disagreement. Wasn't Mary 1 betrothed several times, in childhood and was never sent to those countries. But, to be so naive as to not have a grasp of the Protestant - Catholic fury, is mind boggling. All I can think of is she was "thinking like a Queen, as in, "They have no choice as to submit".

It contained: *Murder at Kirk o’ Field. What happened in 1567?* Early in the morning of 10 February 1567, Kirk o’ Field house in Edinburgh was destroyed by an explosion. The partially clothed bodies of Lord Darnley, the second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, and his servant were found in a nearby orchard, apparently strangled but unharmed by the explosion. Suspicion immediately fell upon Mary and James Hepburn, Earl of Bothwell, one of her closest and most trusted noblemen. Although Bothwell was considered to be the lead conspirator, he was found not guilty at his trial in April, 1567. Mary married Bothwell the following month, just three months after Darnley’s murder. An interesting video, but very pro-Mary (as I am not). What follows is my opinion, and a point of view, which I must say is not purely an account based on solid evidence. Rather, it's what seems believable to me based on history that at that time was very dependent on the bias of the contemporary recorders. Mary was very unfortunate in the circumstances of her birth and upbringing, but she brought some of her troubles on herself. She might have been better off being betrothed or married to Henry VIII's son, Edward, as maybe in England she'd have got a better education, more on the lines of that of Elizabeth and Lady Jane Grey (not that her education helped this unfortunate woman, also used as a pawn by unscrupulous powerful men). But in the French court, Mary seems to have been brought up as an ornamental future queen consort, and she never learned enough statecraft to be able to prosper as a queen regnant. (She was also brought up to favor the French interests.) She chose Darnley as her husband based, probably, mainly on his position in the English royal family (via his mother), and probably also because she fell for his pretty face--and ignored any defects in his character, if they were apparent at the time.Elizabeth I is thought to have promoted the match because she knew Darnley's character defect would serve Mary ill. He was the worst possible husband sMary could have chosen--vain, jealous, spiteful. If she had gone into a sort of partnership with her half brother James, a leader of the Protestant party, who'd been acting as a regent until she returned to Scotland, she might have had more success as a queen. But, an ardent Catholic, she discriminated against the Protestants and encouraged the religious strife rather than try to dissipate it. Of course, John Knox was a particularly difficult antagonist, as leader of the Protestants--bigoted and intransigent. She might never have been able to preside successfully over a country so torn apart. But she paid very little attention to the well-being of her subjects, having the worst traits of an absolute monarch (probably learned all too well in France). She was almost certainly culpable in the murder of Darnley, to judge by her actions on the night he was murdered--she lured him out of a relatively safe place to a house where he could more easily be attacked. And then she shielded his assassins and ended up marrying Bothwell. How much of that was due to force and how much to her inclination is hard to say. A lot of the "history" of that time is supposition based on gossip (as was the case in England, too, of course, under the Tudors, who were quite adept at creating propaganda and false narratives). She may have been desperate to escape, but if she thought fleeing to England, the enemy of her country of Scotland, was to a place of safety, where Elizabeth would welcome her, a rival, with open arms, that only shows her naivete. She should have tried to get to France. I think long years of captivity in England must have been appalling for her, but joining in a plot to overthrow Elizabeth was stupid. (Elizabeth was much smarter when imprisoned by Mary I, and skillfully avoided the traps set for her.) If Mary had been born in happier times, she might have led a happy life and her ineptitude in statecraft wouldn't have mattered. But she made the worst of a bad situation. Her grandson Charles I seems to have inherited her lack of talent rather than his father's street smarts! (It's amazing James Vi and I turned out as canny as he did, and that he survived, given his parenthood, both Mary and Darnley, neither being among the world's effective rulers or consorts.) Sorry to be so negative, but I do think Mary has been turned into this romantic heroine when she was a probably a very charming but basically silly woman. She was certainly victimized by unscrupulous men, but Elizabeth was also in a position where similar men tried to use her and abuse her, and she was smart enough and tough enough to emerge with psychological scars but still alive, and her own person, and able to rule her country a whole lot better--and to gain the love of most of her subjects. On the whole, the Stuarts from Mary onward were not a great dynasty. Of Mary, James I and Vi, Charles I, Charles II, James II, two lost their heads and one lost his throne. Only James I and Charles II were pragmatic enough to survive, although neither can be considered a great king. Mary II (and William III) and Anne were lucky enough to rule when Parliament had already gotten more power, and they weren't pushing the Divine Right of Kings (or Queens) down everyone's throats. Anyway, I found the video very interesting, and it got me intellectually engaged, which is always a good thing, even--or especially?--if I don't fully agree! I've enjoyed all your videos in this series that I've seen so far. Very stimulating. Thank you!

Your account of Mary is not only inaccurate it is greatly misleading. Your very first image is not Mary, but Queen Elizabeth. It has the Queen of Scots logo on it to show it belong to Mary. It's is an exchange portrait. Mary had to get out of France as she had arranged another marriage, much to the French Queen's annoyance. Mary declared herself Queen of Scotland and Queen of England when she went back to Scotland. Robert Dudley in order to get out of the marriage to Mary Stuart, arranged Lord Darnley to go to Scotland and the Queen knowing he had a claim to the English throne married him. But Darnley was completely hated in Scotland. Darnely developed syphilis and was so he he couldn't walk. Mary nursed him, but at the same time was writing love notes to Lord Bothwell, who by the way was married and a protestant. Darnely had planned a double suicide with Mary, but she didn't come and Darnley took his own life. Two servants found him dead and rather go through the scandal of suicide they arranged for the house to be blown up. They placed his body neatly under the tree in the garden and one of the servants blew up the house killing some other servants and was injured in the blast himself. The other servant in the garden killed himself. His body was found not laid out neatly. Bothwell and Mary were blamed for the "murder". Bothwell thought she had done it and she thought he had done it. The rape story is fictitious. She married him shortly after, much to the Pope's disgust! Mary suffered from Hyperthyroidism all her life, one of the side effects would be to miscarry. The others would give her loads of energy at times, then collapse in a heap. However she is what we would call today a psychopath. In that she used people to gain an advantage in whatever she wants. Religion to her was just another means to get what she wanted and when planning to marry The Duke of Norfolk a protestant, she said she would change her religion to marry him. Marry used the marriage card often. She was also one of those women who would be all over any man at the drop of a hat. She asked Queen Elizabeth for protection and she got just like somebody testifying in a trial of some killer - protective custody. Elizabeth however treated her as a queen, even though when she resigned ( which she said she would to become a "damsel" with Bothwell) she was no longer a Queen. But Mary would just have to sit and wait. Nobody knew how long Queen Elizabeth would live. And Elizabeth didn't care who got the throne after her death, as long as nobody tried to take it from whilst she was alive. But Mary wasn't prepared to sit and wait. At the trial Mary was declared an "ordinary person" not a Queen. But Elizabeth would not execute her. Plots came out further so Elizabeth signed the death warrant. In attempt to stop any more plots. Saying it would be sent off if anyone tried anything else. But Walsingham was ill and another man was in charge, a less experienced man. He had the warrant sent to have the Great Seal attached - without permission. The Queen played hell with him. So he got intouch with Cecil who organised a meeting of the Council without the Queen. The law was that they could send the now "active" warrant off without the Queen's permission and they did so. When she found out nearly all her Council was in deep trouble. And Cecil lost all favour. At the execution Mary panicked and shook from head to toe, hence why the lips were moving at the end. She had no control of these movements. Despite one executioner holding Mary down, the other couldn't get hit her neck in the right spot and the result was the mess!

Elizabeth I also dangled the possibility of being her heir like a carrot in front of Mary Queen of Scots. She should have just made her her heir and been done with it. That’s what essentially happened anyway with James, Mary’s son inheriting the English throne. Elizabeth was cruel. Who knows how much abuse Mary could have avoided by being her heir.

As ever, I have to question the appalling pronunciations. The french word Dauphin is pronounced Do-fan not ‘Delphin’.( No ‘L’) and re the letter from Mary about Darnley’s murder you surely meant to say ‘Impunity’ not Impurity? lol. Another recent post in this series informed us that Henry VIII’s Will was carried out by a council of ‘Executioners’ (Good heavens! ) when meaning Executors. Also it’s FotherinGAY Castle, not FotheringHAY.The narrator needs either some grammatical knowledge or a proof-reader. It’s important to comprehend what is actually being read. I watch now mainly for the paintings and museum pieces which have at least been well selected.
