This is my third watchthrough. It might be a bit early to call this, but this video will probably be my favourite video released this year. This is what film criticism should be like. The scriptwriting is immaculate. There is a complete lack of fluff in any of the sections, which are often present in many film countdowns like this. This is mostly due to some critics not really caring about most of the films they discuss, but your knowledge and appreciation for the medium of film (and music as well, loved your worst to best videos) is super apparent and infectious. As someone currently studying art analysis (specifically in film and music), it’s super refreshing and inspiring to see that there are still people out there taking the field of art criticism and analysis seriously, especially in a time where the overall quality of art criticism is at an all time low. I also absolutely adore the editing in the video. The footage shown on screen is always relevant to what you’re discussing, and the background music is perfectly subtle, but also always complements the movie (they might be taken from the soundtrack of the film at hand, I wouldn't know tho). The video is also just incredibly entertaining in general. I generally like dry delivery and humor and I feel like you’ve perfected that. I genuinely hope this video reaches more people, just for the fact that I think more people should be shown that good art analysis still exists.

What's even worse for Dinosaur is that they sounded SOOO MICH BETTER and more interesting. Aladar was originally a hot-head named Noah who has psychic abilities of the future and is dismissed from the astroid hitting. But after the devastation, he and other surviving dinosaurs, along with his iguanodon grandparents and his lemur friends like Adam, ban together to leave. Kron was named Cain and was actually Noah's childhood friend and outcast Noah for trying to outsource him and the herd. Unlike the actual movie's boring deserts and limited brown dinosaurs, there were way more colorful dinosaurs traveling in more appealing landscapes. Colorful fields, orange and blue deserts, vibrant jungles, mountains full of snow, and an entire sequence of them crossing through a dangerous river. Later on, the grandparents are too weak to continue walking and sacrifice themselves from a carnotaurus, leaving Noah to keep going and become a leader. Noah and Cain would also have a fight on lava (ala Star Wars 3.) Later drafts in 1996 focused more on the relationship with Noah and Cain who were now brothers as a metaphor for Moses. Aladar was a baby and separated by a carnotaurus and is discovered by the lemurs. Their island is destroyed and they're discovered/reunited with his now cold and estranged brother who now guides the herd. His brother is also disgusted by Aladar's good sweet values he's learned from his adopted family. Leaving Aladar going through a moral crisis over who's his real family. Also, the Carnotaurus was originally supposed to have very small bits of dialogue that would come off as unexpected for him as an antagonistic killer. CEO of Disney, Michael Eisner, was the one who demanded the dinosaurs to talk with many animators threatening to leave if they started singing. They originally wanted something like Homeward Bound by having inner voices. And even considered subtitles. But Eisner wasn't convinced since not making them talk would defeat the purpose of the possibilities of CGI. The iguanodons all had beaks and it was tested with them physically talking but everyone felt it lacked emotions and felt the animation looked unintentionally goofy. Resulting in them having lips.

Fun Fact: According to MatPat (circa 2019), Dinosaur has the single highest kill count in any Disney movie purely because of the scene where all the lemurs die
@EugenioScamardellaСағат бұрын
Frankly I think that Fantasia has it, you know. In that movie we witness the very extinction of the dinosaurs, which I guess are numerically more than all the lemurs (albeit many) on the island.

1:07:13 I wanna add something here. Mother Gothel is the classic pure evil parent which makes her less relatable. But I think another aspect that makes her inclusion sting far less than Buck Cluck's is that she is never "redeemed." She doesn't just get away with the terrible shit she did. She fuckin dies. I'm not saying Mother Gothel or Buck Cluck are necessarily irredeemable characters, but the way Chicken Little does it makes it so Buck is just forgiven without actually having to face any repercussions.

Great video! I just want to mention a few things about Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros. José Carioca’s name is pronounced “Joe-se” not “Hose”, it’s a portuguese name, not a hispanic one. The last time Disney pronounced his name correctly was in 1961. The movies weren’t made with an American audience in mind, they were made for the people they are representing. The movies were made in a time where media from the USA wasn’t just as widespread as it is today, in many countries Snow White was the first foreigner movie ever to be dubbed, this was a new thing. During WW2 most countries in the Americas were neutral and many had close relationships with Germany, the US government wanted to get closer to the rest of the continent with the hope the population would press the governments to join the Allies, that’s why the two movies were made. The movies worked, and the relationship between US Latin American and Brazil got closer but not the way the US government expected. The Brazilian government used the US “Good Neighbor” policy and sent a lot of Brazilian artists to the US, including the singer José Oliverica, that became José Carioca’s voice actor, and the singer and actress Carmen Miranda that got so popular that woman with fruits on the head because a stereotype for Brazilians in the US despite just being a bit she did in her movies. While Saludos amigos was made to show the countries by the eyes was the Disney artists, The Three Caballeros was made by Brazilian and Mexican singers, most of the songs in the movie were licenced songs, including the two main themes “Have you been to Bahia” and “The three Caballeros”. Both movies were very well received in the countries it represents (alright a lot of people from Chile didn’t like the short about Pedro the airplane because it has nothing to do with the country) and they represent the culture of the time very well! José Carioca became very popular for a while and he was HUGE in Brazil but that was thanks to newspaper strips. Before Saludos Amigos was released Disney introduced José Carioca in the Silly Symphony comic strips where he was a con artist that tricks tourists to give him money (that way the comics recontext his segment in Saludos Amigos is so funny). He was the main character for 3 years and when this series was localized to Portuguese it exploded in popularity so much that Disney had to make new José stories that got added into Donald’s comic series until he finally got his own comic book that ran from 1961 to 2018 ending on issue 2446. There was also a third movie being made called “Cuban Carnaval”, it got cancelled but a segment was produced and was added into Melody time.
@GoldenJLR9 күн бұрын
Two neat things I forgot to mention: In The three Caballeros Yaya is played by Aurora Miranda, Carmen Miranda's sister. And I believe José Oliveira also cameoed in the Yaya segment. Not only did Clarence Nash and José Oliveria voice Donald Duck and José Carioca in the English version they also voiced the characters in Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian. Joaquin Garay (Panchito) however, only returned to sing because although he was Mexican he lived most of his life in the US and had developed an American accent. Garay was replaced in the dubs by Felipe Turich
@VerdanaVideos9 күн бұрын
@@GoldenJLR Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful and well-informed comment. You’re totally right that I mispronounced Jose’s name (didn’t even catch that) and I also didn’t realize just how much influence Mexican and Brazilian singers had on the Three Caballeros until now. That being said, I would disagree with you on the assertion that the film was “made” by these singers. They were involved with production as performers and Disney also employed many as cultural advisors, yes, but all the lead creatives on the film (directors, writers, art designers) were Americans who had final say on what made it in and what didn’t. The vast majority of the animation was done in the states by American animators as well. Regardless, perhaps you’re right that the film did a better job of capturing the Brazilian and Mexican cultures at the time than I gave it credit for. I was mainly focused on the film’s bizarre fixation on Donald’s sexuality when watching it, lol. Cheers.
@GoldenJLR9 күн бұрын
@@VerdanaVideos I 100% agree with you that at the end of the day it is an American movie and it was the directors and artists that had the final say and were the leaders of the project. Although the movies were very respectful to the cultures they were portraying, a few errors were made, like misspelling the word Bahia (one of the 26 states of Brazil) as Baía (it means Bay in Portuguese). However there are a few details in both movies that I can only explain as influences of the singers and voice actors, like how Saludos Amigos ends with Donald and José dancing inside a building that has the word “URCA” blinking on top. That was Cassino da Urca, where José Oliveira previously worked (the casino closed in 1946 but the building is still there). ( I actually made a video talking about the brazilian aspect of both movies and the one sequel short from 1960)

There is - unsure of the right word to use - an AU of Sword in the Stone where after all the drama surrounding Lancelot and Mordred and Morgan LeFay, King Arthur's mind is cast back from Camelot's fall to young Wart in an attempt to fix things, and with his heart so wounded by all the betrayal, seeks companionship from the one being who truly loved him unconditionally, so Merlin turns the squirrel human and she takes the name Hazel and then it becomes an excuse for cute art of them.

Honestly, just because it’s Disney (I am yet to find a Disney movie that almost nobody talks about; perhaps I watched some, like take for instance, the Encino Man duology, mainly Encino Woman in particular, the Witch Mountain trilogy, One Day at Disney, one of the earliest Disney+ originals even if it’s an episodic series, Avalon High and a few other DCOMs excluding the High School Musical franchise which is or was iconic in the mid-late 2000s, Seal Island which is very ahead of its time because of how accurately it represented Inuit culture in the early 20th century, Bedknobs and Broomsticks despite being made by the same director with live-action/animation like in Marry Poppins with David Tomlinson, The Parent Trap and I’m talking about both versions and thinking about whether or not around the late 2030s of making a re-imagining of it complete with Rankin-Bass style stop-motion animation like in the opening credits of the otherwise dated original) and thanks to the age of the Internet, I don’t think any of these are forgotten any longer!

@АринаСадовская-р8н7 күн бұрын
Man, you have a very biased attitude towards Brother Bear. The fact that you didn't get it, it's your problem, not the movie. And you misunderstood the moral, which is perfectly revealed. The moral is not that bears are cool, but to avoid revenge and a cycle of cruelty. You're just judging the movie by the little things and quibbles, not objectively. I've never had any problems or discomfort watching a movie. Brother Bear is great, and it doesn't deserve a place next to other Disney failures.

Hey quick question (which is vaguely related to Disney). Based on what we’ve seen on season 14 of Doctor who where would you place Ncuti Gatwa on your ranking of Doctors?

As of now, probably between Peter Davison and Sylvester McCoy, but he’s only had 9 episodes so far which isn’t very much so things might change as his era goes on.

@VerdanaVideos9 күн бұрын
Both RTD and Tennant have stated that 14 and 10 are essentially meant to be the same character so I would rank them together. I personally think it was a missed opportunity to not make 14 a markedly different take on the character from 10, but hey.
@Creek9329 күн бұрын

1:28:42 I think what makes this one the worst is... well, these are *human beings* being shown here, whereas other movies make the racist caricatures some kind of animal, like a crow or a cat, which you could argue is worse in the sense that it's dehumanising those races, but like... at the very least kids won't pick up on the racism with the crows or the cats, especially if they don't know what those races are yet. But these are literally human beings of the race they represent, so if this is a kid's introduction to them... Ouch. :/ Like, bruh... freaking _Annie Get Your Gun_ is less racist than this, because while the Natives in that play and film may be somewhat stereotyped by today's standards, they otherwise seem like normal people, especially considering that Chief Sitting Bull is based on a real person of the same name, and the real racism comes more from Annie herself, claiming she's "an Indian too" [sic] because Sitting Bull adopted her as his daughter, and going to sing a song listing off a bunch of cultural stuff without its proper context. And yet that's *still* less racist than, "Duhhhh, we red because ancestor blush at pretty gurl! Hurhurhur!!!"

Like... he's basically the movie's Cobra Bubbles; a sort of intimidating but well-meaning authority figure who's merely looking out for the community, but is still a legit threat to the main characters despite his lack of malevolence. But alas, he falls victim to the same racist caricaturing as the rest of the tribe, because 50s gotta 50s, amirite?
