GTA IVs was a good blend of Arcade and Realism to me, I wouldn’t say Rockstar were trying to go for full on realism because for example, jumps in GTA IV will never really destroy your car unless you go off from a weird angle, the car jump physics in IV are kind of weird, imagine GTA V’s air control except the game slowly tries to do it for you to put the car on all fours when landing, there is also the lack of damage, I could drive off a bridge, land with the grill facing the ground, and it will glue to the ground with only small dent to the front bumper rather than it being completely smashed and bouncing flipping to its roof since it landed almost on its front rather than bottom, the air control comparison I made earlier is kind of hard to notice but install a map mod with big jumps and you’ll notice how it slowly goes into trying to land on all fours

The Mafia series use Illusion engine and it seems a lot more realistic than all of the GTA games, especially when car crashes are severely more fatal. There is some similarities between the driving physics of Mafia and GTA4, but I feel like Mafia just does it better. That being said, I have a feeling GTA5 wouldn't be nearly as successful as it is if it had stayed on the realism path, especially online. I don't really have any issues with it but after replaying all of the GTA games recently, it was the thing that stood out the most to me, the driving physics seemingly downgraded between 4 and 5 and the game got a whole lot easier. I've always thought that GTA SA is the best game in the series, but it would be freaking amazing with the same engine and physics as GTA4.

GTA 5's car damage is actually pretty good. No, not the deformation, that was heavily reduced, but the mechanical damage is pretty good. Wheels bend quite easily on some cars, plus they added fuel/oil leaks and radiator damage which causes the engine to overheat and massively reduces performance or makes the car undrivable, whereas in GTA 4, cars always retained the same performance until they stopped working. Unfortunately the handling is way too forgiving therefore you don't crash too often and damaging your vehicle isn't even a real risk, plus most people play online where new dlc cars are all actual tanks with zero damage model so these mechainics are almost always overlooked.

Personally, I got bored of the GTA 5 driving physics in less than 2 weeks, I remember when I pre-ordered the game in September 2013, first thing I tested when I actually had the game was driving, and I still remember how "cool" it appeared at first in comparison to GTA 4, it was actually possible to do hard turn at 130 km/h... and then after some hours of playing I quickly realized how boring this driving mechanics where !

Body roll actually existed and was properly applied to correct vehicle types. Cars of the same type had more handling variety between them. On top of that, you don't get up to high speeds in gta iv often either so why even bring that up? It's not a fun handling model and if you want realistic handling in a driving game, go play an actual racing sim game with a real racing sim setup

@@NoobyNotyeah exactly. People really love the bouncy physics of gta 4 for some reason because it’s more ReALisTic wgen in reality it’s just excessive suspension travel and worse turning angles and because gta 5 has less of both gta 4 is somehow the better model because ‘realism’. Anyone who has driven in a game like forza, gran turismo, asseto corsa, etc. especially with a decent sim setup knows gta 4 is not realistic, it’s just more challenging and not as fun. It feels like a chore to drive whereas in gta v I wanna drive forever.

2:15 I get it, its a joke, but you could have mentionned Driver on the PSX, and his "GTA-like" before GTAIII driving.
@jisvanoverschot2 күн бұрын
I do agree that GTA IV was more realistic. I do despite that all cars seemed to have the same type of suspension. Even the Infernus handelend like a boat, that just makes no sense. It made cornering with super cars very much not fun.

gta v cant have gta 4s wonky physics, have you ever been chased by the terminator AI in gta online? they never miss with those micro SMGs and would aimbot you out of the vehicle if they crashed into you and flipped your car or made it unbalanced from a bump into the players car. since the AI are more aggressive it makes the snappy handling a must to get away or drive fast while able to shoot back, if you get bumped in gta v no problem is easy to recover from it. it would be a nightmare to have it like gta 4 where once the car flips over you have to get out then it would be the AI aimbotting you as you get out and kill you before you even get fully up from getting out of the upside down vehicle, so im glad gta v had simple handling for cars, i just dint like the downgrade to ragdoll physics.
@BDozer6663 ай бұрын
Then don't have terminator/super aggressive AI either. When making changes to a game, ofc you'll change more than just 1 thing so they all work well in tandem.
@richyrich72603 ай бұрын
The AI aggressiveness is ridiculous in V and should have been inline with GTA IV.

It is strange but i like the gta V physics because i like old arcade racing game and i think it is actually the best physics for a arcade racing game (forza horizon its not in this category i speak about nfs or burnout)

People used to complain that GTA 5 car were hard to control at launch. I'm pretty sure they somewhat tweaked stuff and added tractions to all cars, but at some point they just made all cars awd BC ppl couldn't take turns without crashing with the og cars (they have alot less tractions and you have alot of decent stock drift cars) GTA 5 physics are not as complex at 4 but I don't thinks it was a bad thing neither since 4 was too much for most players and even in gta 5 ppl were crying about low grips and how they wanted actual drift cars that you can just press on the gas and drift BC they don't understand how to actually function to pedals and handbrakes to actually drift a car and also how suspension affect over and understeering witch the dev never explained to anyone or don't even understand themselves (stock or street for the +5 tractions are the best to drifts for most cars since lower suspension just make ur car spin out for nun and harder to control for most cars) GTA 5 physics are more fun in my opinion but the developer failed at teaching the players how to actually drive cars (clutch kicking, braking to make ur rear slip out before starting an handbrake drift, how brake+gas causes wheel spining even while driving) and allowed noobs to take over with the cars that turn on a dime at 200.

Ye it's pretty sad the direction they decided to go with GTA5's physics, but there's a lot more factors that impacted that decision to downgrade it beyond just making it appeal to a larger market. (1) The developers were already pushing the limits with GTA5 in other aspects and there was not a lot they could do with hardware from 2005/2006(last gen consoles) the developers were saying how there's a lot of details in the first trailer that never made it to the final game simply because they caused it to run so slow(look at the foliage for example), the driving and other physics in GTA4 were very intensive and unoptimized(just look at how it runs on PC) and would just cause the game to be even slower or not run at all. (2) Tons of people cherish the physics now, but they were hated before GTA5 released(just look at gta forums pre 2012 lol) combined with the previous fact it is clear why they massively downgraded it compared to other aspects. (3) Possibly a gameplay and stylistic decision, the realistic driving fits the tight streets of liberty city, while the arcade driving of 5 better suits the wide and long roads of los santos. If you swapped the driving mechanics using mods neither game would feel right and it wouldn't be fun to play. Agree with the last part tho, really hope they can find some middle ground for GTA6. The driving felt like you were in a boat even if you were in an AWD sports car in GTA4, and it felt like you were glued to the ground even driving an RV in GTA5, from the leaks the deformation looks really good but can't make a judgement on the physics yet.

Realism in games is good. The more realistic the game is in any way, the more immersive it is. Let's be honest, what kind of game would make it easier to forget that you're playing and it not actually being real life, the pixelated graphics and poor mechanics or realistic graphics and mechanics. Like, if the game is realistic, it makes it harder to distinguish the game from the real life which is the purpose of gaming, to escape from reality.

I’ve always argued that GTA 4s driving is superior but then I went back to play it and boy is it FLAWED in some places, not being able to make a turn if you’re going faster than 5mph is the most annoying thing, besides needed an entire city block to come to a stop from 30mph

gta 4 driving physics made the driving something you actually had to oay attention to. Dense traffic, sharp turns,. You can't just go 250mph and whip around a corner no problem

GTA 4 has horrible driving. It's not realistic handling wise nor is it a great arcade style driver. It's just bad, I get GTA 5 is even less realistic but it probably has the best arcade physics out of any game I've played

Everyone forgot that gta v pushed ps3 and x360 to it's limits so they toned down the physics unlike gta 4 which was capable for advanced physics with low graphics and smaller map Gta 6 should learn rdr2

I'm so tired of this discussion. None of these games had a better or worse driving engine. Gta 4's cars were bloaty and heavy to express the mood of this game. Story of Nico was depressing and dark, so cars that steer ''realistically'' would fit better than hotwheels. Ofc it's cool that we can have such a large amout of detail and opporunities while driving, but chases and races in gta 4 ESPECIALLY on consoles were just painful. I bought a ps3 few months ago and wanted to check out how would it like to be playing gta 4 they way people used to do. It was awful. 2 missions in I would be so tired of babysitting my car because it couldn't drive how I wanted. I'm not good with gaming on console because im a PC gamer, but still. Driving was amazing but not for dynamic driving. Gta V on the other hand is a goofy ass, lighthearted game that was a parody of hollywood. You know what Hollywood and gta V driving physics have in common? They are fake and unrealistic. Amount of fast driving in V would be a chore with more ''realistic'' car physics. And it works in gta online fine as well so that was probably part of a plan. It's not realistic, but it's not a chore at least.

Let's see what shall Rockstar do? Go with the driving of the least replayable GTA game which is GTA 4 or go with the driving of GTA V that continues to sell TEN YEARS ON at 195 MILLION COPIES and still counting? Such a hard decision to make.🤫

I loved GTA 4 driving phisics. It required skills to master it, but it was satisfying to do so, just like "simulation" driving in Mafia games. So I was disappointend by the pronounced arcade feel of GTA V. But unnecessary? Distasteful? I don't know, looking at sales number we are the minority.
