So grateful for John Barclay's and David DeSilva's work in the area of gift giving and cultural norms in the ancient world.

I have NEVER been happy with the phrase "unconditional love" or "unconditional grace". It makes it seem as if nothing is required of me. God does make an offer to all people, that is not conditional on the depth of their present sinful state, but is conditional on their response - and that response is not "What a great free offer, I'll have that" but "If You are willing to forgive me and have me I give myself to You". That is then worked out in loyalty and obedience - and James 2:14-26 makes perfect sense (BTW a reason why we should not regard the reformers as founts of all truth)

Barclay in his book says: the grace of God is unconditioned not unconditional. As well we need to recover the concept salvation as a covenant status.

@@johngallagher9786 Second Corinthians 9:13. Thanks be to God for His UNSPEAKABLE GIFT, ETERNAL LIFE. All we had to do was receive the gift that is already paid in full. John 6:47. John 10:28-29. On recent reading and reflection I'll try a definition of Grace. Gods grace is the gift of Christ (his life, death and resurrection) with the purpose of establishing a new people in relationship with him, empowering them with specific skills and abilities and commissioning them into his service. The gift is akin to an investment.

Center is commitment, but dont we think we will progress, maturing by living it out. Those in persecuted countries have lives that need to hear and obey Him.

Great conversation! Have you considered how the "Gospel" Good News changes from the Hebraic understanding? The first Christians followed and lived based on the Scriptures that gave instructions for Abba's children that set them apart. How then can we deny our Saviour's heritage to which we as followers of Christ are grafted in? If HE showed us the WAY, how come we do other festive days and customs? Doesn't the "Gospel" exrend to the Salvation of the childen of Abraham, Issac and Jacob? What of the Scripture "Look, your house is abandoned. And you ill never see me again until you say. "Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord!' Luke 13:35- We must look to the restoration of HIS KINGDOM on Earth, where? Israel. All Scriptures must be fulfilled until our Bridegroom can return, right?

PSA is a distortion. Christ took on all the evils upon himself so we can be freed . Jesus is not God’s whipping boy. His act heals us from the terminal sin disease.

The gospel that Paul preached is the same gospel that Jesus preached. John 3:16-18. Paul's gospel. First Corinthians 15:1-4. That Christ died for our sins, according to the scriptures, that He was buried and rose again on the third day, according to the scriptures. Romans 1:16. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the POWER of God unto salvation to EVERYONE THAT BELIEVET, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Galatians 1:6-9. Though we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that we have preached unto you, LET HIM BE ACCURSED. As we said before, so say I again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received from us, LET HIM BE ACCURSED. Second Corinthians 9:13. Thanks be to God for His UNSPEAKABLE GIFT, ETERNAL LIFE. No one can earn it. And once you have it you cannot lose it because it is ETERNAL LIFE. John 3:18. First John 5:13. John 6:47. John 10:28-29. Hebrews 13:5. Ephesians 1:13-14. Ephesians 4:30. Sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise unto the day of redemption. The rapture of the church. Romans 4:5-8. Romans 3:26-28. Jesus paid it all and we paid 0. You cannot boast in 0. Ephesians 2:8-9. For by grace ye are saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. Second Corinthians 9:13. Thanks be to God for His UNSPEAKABLE GIFT, ETERNAL LIFE. No one can earn it. And once you have it you cannot lose it because it is eternal life.

Paul and Jesus had a consistent message to two different audiences. So sometimes they sound a little different because of the issues they were dealing with (Jew/Gentile cultural and religious differences). Thanks for your comment! - Matt Dabbs
