So true. However, as a survivor I learned pretty early on that once the information has been shared you lose control of it. Eventually it just becomes better to live with it being known. It's terrible to have it shared without your permission. But that's what happens probably most of the time. On a certain level it's important for victims of SA to learn that the information shouldn't have any power over them because it's not their fault and they can let go of the shame.

Spicy Hot take: the whole josh situation and the information being revealed against her wish was actually good, the duggers been sus for a long while but the police report being published probably saved a good chunk of future victims from being around Josh, it destroyed the castle of delusion that Bob and Michelle built.

I think for the wellbeing of the public, it was definitely good that Josh molesting his sisters was addressed. Gothard's horrific, abusive, and cult teachings might have gone under the radar if it wasn't for the Duggar family having such a public platform. As a victim, Jill has every right to feel the way she feels about the situation. It's her story. However, I hope she can comprehend that her story saved a lot of victims of IBLP from being brought into the very same teachings that lead to the abuse Jill experienced as for the rest of Jim Bob and Michelle's children.

Maybe. But these crimes aren’t prosecuted as often as one thinks. Him being high profile but not too well loved is likely why.
@LizRealGirlBeauty
@LizRealGirlBeauty Жыл бұрын
@Stephanie Bridges he was never prosecuted for molesting his sisters. The statute of limitations had expired. Because his father protected him and took him to a "family friend" to "confess." He was convicted of possessing CSAM. And when his daddy tried to protect him by lying under oath it did not work.
@JamieDoe472
@JamieDoe472 Жыл бұрын
@@LizRealGirlBeauty actually that would depend on the state and when it was actually reported. From what I understand at least as far as California go is it also depends on whether or not it was a violent assault as to whether or not the statute of limitation would apply. I had heard recently too and it could be wrong but I had heard that statute of limitations on s/a crimes with children are not subject to statute of laws. There would have to be existing proof tho. Enough that a prosecutor would have to be sure they could win their case before taking it to trial. I would recommend looking into it though cuz each state is different with regards to the statute of limitations. That I know to be 100% true.

I think Jill's reaction to the info being public information is more than just the usual shame that plagues survivors of CSA or SA in general. They showed how in IBLP they asked people, young girls specifically, if they had been assaulted and then, to the ones who felt safe enough to say yes, asked them what did they do, say, or wear to provoke the man who assaulted them. That's the culture she grew up in. So Jill is likely dealing with a lifetime of conditioning to believe SHE'S at fault for what that monster did ON TOP of all the rest of the thoughts and feelings that come when you survive something like that. I feel so much sympathy for her and I'm so proud of the strong woman she's grown into.

@@louhortonsculpture To be fair, that is still fairly new in the grand scheme of things. I'd have to look into the timeline with the pill specifically to speak on it but I know for a fact that we've made a lot of headway on birth control in general since I was born (1989, so same time). Hell, doctors never even told me I could take the pill continuously until the last few years with no increased risks because there were assumptions being made about needing "periods" despite not ovulating. (Quotes around "periods" because it's not one, it's a withdrawal bleed. Another thing most doctors seemed to have not understood from when I started in 2005.)

I still remember a case I saw as a student nurse. A family that didn't believe in blood transfusions or other medical procedures were having their 8th child, 5th emergency C-section, 6th rH incompatible baby. The hospital would have to sue every time to save these babies from a painful death. During the last C-section, the surgeon stated , "she's bleeding, we're taking her uterus this time". Whether she was or not, it was time for someone else to make decisions for them. She was 40, dad was 50 back in the 80s. I'm all for religious freedom but stupid is stupid! I'm surprised Michelle hasn't had a uterine prolapse by now.

@@ThePastryNinja it got old doing it about every year & 1/2. Takes lawyers & time, neonatal ICU is super expensive & it makes the babies immediate Medicaid patients because no insurance can afford it. I'm not saying all babies shouldn't be cared for but having it happen over & over when it didn't have to was maddening. I had Rhogam after my kid, didn't need it because I never had another but wasn't sure at the time. Lots of reasons I left nursing, this was a taste of the challenges of the field. I also challenged administration on behalf of other patients & was discriminated against for it. Lots of stuff happened to the medical field 80s- 90s. Huge corporations gained more control.

As a mother, I can assure you that would be incredibly traumatic and invasive. I gave birth during the peak of COVID and the hospital only allowed the sam 2 people the entire time you're there. I was so glad. My mother in law wanted to come, but I didn't want anyone other than my mom and my ex husband. I was SO glad that I had that as an excuse to exclude anyone else. As a mother I agree with Trina above, mine was before covid but I still only had my ex and mom there. I was very self conscious about the fact I was going to be crapping myself (even told my ex not to tell me if I pooped or not). Coming from a family like the Duggars (my mom escaped so I'm once removed) and the shame added to women for their bodies I can only imagine made it 10× worse for her as well. Like for me, someone that did burlesque etc. being filmed naked wouldn't be a big deal, but my cousin whom wasn't allowed to wear even a one piece bathing suit and shamed for her body, would rather crawl in a hole for eternity than be filmed naked.

Both our mothers suffered with their CSA being blamed on them, my aunt then married a guy that almost ended her life; when she divorced him my grandmother shamed her for it (and really shamed her for 40 years about it, till her death). My aunt also went to college, she and a few of her female cousins were the first to do so. My cousin and I grew up with residual stuff, which is why she chose psychology. Both our moms are hard to deal with to say the least. They really need(ed) more help than they actually got. Many times in IBLP survivors, the parents act like the children are their property with no rights, and this doesn’t change as the children grow into adults. I doubt that JimBob and Michelle thought they were doing anything wrong. My FIL for real thought he had the right to command us to do things. Go into debt for something he wanted us to do. Command us to go on vacation with him. Command us to let him take our children for whatever and however long he wanted. We had no right because he was the patriarch-- at least according to him. So Jim Bob's behavior makes perfect sense to me. This is on par for what I've seen from these cultic groups.

Omg in that one episode where Bill Gothard brought a random little boy on stage and was “teaching” the audience how to spank there kids! When he put him over his knee and tapped on him bottom and made him give him a hand hug, made me so sick.

I come from a large family. There are 10 kids in my family. I get asked once in a while “like the Duggars”? It ticks me off. My mom was raised in Chicago in a modern orthodox Jewish home. My dad was raised in a southern baptist home but was more secular. My mom stopped being an observant Jew and moved to Texas, where my siblings and I were born. I am 14. My oldest brother is 16. The youngest is a toddler. We loosely celebrate Jewish and Christian holidays. I have learned about both. My family is in NO WAY like the Duggar’s and my parents just like kids. They don’t think they are biblically commanded to have large families. Both my parents just wanted large families. My dad is not power hungry and not manipulative. My mom is not some deluded person who thinks the man rules the roost. Jim-Bob is beyond disgusting. A misogynistic POS who seemed to think what his pervy son did was A-OK. Josh should never get out. Ever. Really the mom is a mess too and I feel sorry for the kids. DCFS really should step in.

I have a completely different view of them now. I always thought that they were too good to be true, but gave them the benefit of the doubt. I thought their 'church' was strange. The parents are despicable for how they've used those poor children. I'm glad the older ones have spoken out about the horrors in that house. Jim Bob is a monster!

They can get in sooo much trouble signing for adult children. Thats forgery and its a literal felony. TLC needs backlash for even allowing this. They are unprofessional not updating those contracts as the kids reached adulthood.

5:09 I really hope the people in middle and high school that tormented me with stories of my assault see this. Thank you, Kyeluh for stating what you did. I’ve never heard someone say that before, but yes, it is extremely traumatic and life-changing. When everyone “knows” your story, spreads rumors, harasses you, points you out, asks questions without even knowing your name, etc it’s a different level of trauma. To my past school mates: I hope you all feel the pain you have caused and never do it again. I hope you all raise better children and adults than you all were. I hope your kids never do and say the types of things you all said/did to myself and others. I hope you all understand, grow, and get your karma.

More focus needs to be placed on how those girls were parentified, and made into pseudo-mom at very young ages. You didn’t see the boys taking on buddies and helping take care of their younger siblings. As a parentified child survivor, I had it easy compared to those older Duggar girls. Also, I am sorry but both of the Duggar parent need to be in prison right next to Josh. They are more responsible, when those girls were inappropriately abused by their brother, than what they’ve been held to. If Josh had gotten proper therapy and learned healthy behaviors earlier in life, he probably wouldn’t have had severe CP on his computer. Those parents are child abuser in the name of the Lord almighty they believe in.

The kids were never going to get money. With the families beliefs, the father is the head of everything. The king so to speak in this dynamic so he keeps the wealth because the families money is his money. It's a shame but the fame went straight to his head and he wanted to protect it at all cost. That's why he tried to gloss over the Josh thing. He thought if the world saw his daughters forgive him like they should (because religion demands it) then the world could forgive him and move on. All of it is just gross power and ego trip

Correct me if I’m wrong- but it seems that the kids who have moved on from the IBLP are female- the male kids have stayed put. I understand that part of the reason is financial as JimBob is holding the purse strings; but why would they leave? As a man, Gothards teachings give everything to them.

Coogan law is a state law in California. About 5 other states have a similar law with differing percentages that must be saved until adulthood. Arkansas isn't one of those states but even if it was, reality TV doesn't fall under the umbrella of those laws. They were made before reality TV was a thing and haven't been updated since unfortunately.

An additional aspect to JBs money management; 1. Missionaries and all the times he's spoken of supporting such and asking others to support the, and then how did he treat his daughter and SIL as missionaries? 2. Recall footage of JB asking for tire shops, etc, to give him a deal. Always expecting others to do for him (entitlement), and I'd wonder when people ask him to help out if he'd give back.... it would appear we have our answer. Upon further thought; there is something here with JB and Bill Gothard. Think the entitlement ties in here (part of the teaching?). And then for JB to adopt Bill Gothards definition of attractive female (or was it JBs jam already and Bill though the same?) and then impose it on your wife and daughters? Also, there is something to Gothard getting others to do for him and JB getting everyone, his kids included, to do for him. JB being drawn to IBLP because it resonated with what he already thought of himself...
