In this video we take a walk and explore the Conisbrough Viaduct in South Yorkshire. A disused railway viaduct, now an accessible tarmac path.
Built between 1906 and 1909, it was part of the Dearne Valley Railway between Doncaster and Barnsley. it closed in 1966 and has been left ruined, abandoned and in a deteriorating condition for decades before being made accessible to the public around 10 years ago when Sustrans got involved.
Weather aside, we enjoyed the nice view of the River Don and Don Valley below, with view of Conisbrough Castle and the Cadeby Quarries.
The viaduct consists of 21 arches and one lattice girder span over the river. Made of red brick with a blue brick outer layer, it measures 465m long and contains 12million bricks.
If travelling between Doncaster and Sheffield on the train these days, look to your left before you reach Conisbrough and you will get a great view of the old viaduct.

😄 I seem to pick them recently. I never let a bit of rain get in the way of a good day out though...most of the time.

I remember a few years ago, well maybe longer, a British crime drama used this as its dramatic finale setting. Can't remember for the life of me the drama though. A relatively young structure then , and just for a single track ! Think I'll pay it a visit .

Cheers Lee. Was it DCI Banks or something? I only say that as I read it on Wikipedia 😄

The sheer size of it took my breath away when I paid it a visit on a much warmer day than yours by the look of it. I did Cadeby Tunnel on the same day, so it was nice to get to see two fantastic structures in one go. Great new intro titles by the way👍.

It certainly is a beast. Interesting to read that they also bought the land and minerals underneath the viaduct to prevent mining subsistence like at Bennerley.

You should of taken a trip to the water transfer in a cutting just up from the viaduct.

I used to see it fenced off from the bus on my way to see deltics at Doncaster, in those days the cutting at the edlington end hadn't been landfilled you could also see denaby and cadaby collieries and i have cycled and walked over it many times since it was opened up , its scale never fails to impress such a short working life though

i hate to be morbid but i met a guy at conisbrough station a few years ago (i live nearby) who jumped off this thing .....ended up paraplegic, i chuffin hate walking across it, although i did once scale it (just the embankment ...not the actual brick) at 6 in the morning on my way back to edlo from work lol

Another Great video Paul and yet another location I see through the cab window. I presume the passenger train picture was a railtour as I don’t think it had passenger service. Never seen a picture of a diesel on it but they must have worked over it Cheers Russ

Yeah must have been some very early diesels in the early 60s. Class 40s perhaps? I've not seen too many photos full stop of this viaduct. It mustn't have been very trendy 😄

I’m sure in the early days there was a passenger service but like most back then in this area never really took off
