This is why this issue is so damn complex. I am not English, but I am Italian and grew up catholic. It is hard not to sympathize for the Catholics, at least for me, but you also cannot discount the loyalist’s feelings. It’s not a black and white issue. I’d say the blame largely falls on the governments of the U.K. and Ireland for being lethargic when it comes to trying to solve the issue. It’s like they’ve accepted sectarian violence, which is INSANE considering it’s the 21st century.

I used to work in the Nederland’s with an Irish lad who had been chased out of Belfast after he was shot in the knees and ankles because he was robbing post offices. They didn’t kneecap him because he robbed the post offices no the kneecapped him because he wouldn’t give them a share of the money he got. So he had his flat door kicked in at 4 o’clock one morning and he was shot on his own bedroom floor and was told this is a warning to get out of Ireland.

To me, this whole Catholic VS Protestant thing is a British media narrative... saying that the people in the north are protestant and the republic is catholic, and they tell the world that is the reason for the fighting... trying to make it seem religious rather than a political fight. That way they can set people at one another for all the wrong reasons, and keep people from thinking about the real reasons for the conflict. I am thousands of miles away and even I have this figured out, i'd say. Someone from the area help me out if I am wrong.

You are correct e.g. Irish Republican Brotherhood included both protestant's and catholic's. The religion is just a narrative, it was an easy way to downplay the real issues. The cause of conflict was nothing to do with religion itself. Religion only become more important in identity because it is easier to identify someone based on their religion rather than personal political affiliation and ethnicity which is not as overtly obvious. This worked only because it happened that most Unionists are protestant and most Nationalists are catholic.
@alex-sv8ru5 жыл бұрын
P.E.I. Man -Canada- It was an ethnic conflict. The two ethnicities were 'Protestant' (descendants of Briton settlers in Ulster) and 'Catholic' (the native Irish). The British sent settlers to South Africa aswell, but the world knows who are the natives of South Africa and who are the colonists who came over a few hundred years ago. In Ireland, it's difficult to distinguish between them. Because both are white.

But i will try in a respectful manner. Please correct me on anything in any way you feel needed. Harsh or politely correcting. Ok, here is how thinking people abroad think in general terms on this madness, It has nothing to do with religion. Protestant or Catholic in these times do not matter any more. They are both formed out of Christianity and outdated in terms of science and modern knowledge that is now so easy to get in these globalising information streams. So when i see someone speaking on those two the word that comes in mind is dumb or uneducated. Further more, is it far from truth when i think the vast majority of Ireland as a whole just want peace? That its really a big minority that still stays in this mindset of violence for a cause? Is it also fair to say that that minority was also a minority in the past but that speaking out was flat out dangerous because of the reaction from these people? Like growing up in a extreme religious environment , like Islam these days, you just keep with the plan because else you would become a social outcast? Is it just some pockets of neighbourhoods in present times? Because the Irish i have met so far could not be bothered with it any more. They just hate the Rangers or Celtic and that is it :-) I have a lot of thoughts but to much to write down here i guess. Hope you have a lot of music events to do in the future with all sorts of people. Music and sports are great to get people together. I moved over to Derry/Londonderry from England in 1990 with my alcoholic parents for a few years. Stepfather was catholic from the bogside and mother was from the south near Dublin. I was shocked when I got there as was my mother by the military on the streets, cars being petrol bombed, women being tarred and feathered, the check points, high walls, the violence, hatred and distain between people. When we played outside as kids we ended up heading off into the hills because it was safer than outside our doorstep. If we walked anywhere we had to be mindful which area we were in as we were neither catholic or Protestant. So it was difficult to understand what it was all about and how to fully keep safe. We learned about the story of the British taking over Ireland through the catholic songs. But even then we were naïve to it all. So it’s interesting to see the other side on this video from the Protestants. When we returned to England we were bullied for having developed Irish accents and called IRA scum. Whilst we were in Ireland we were bullied for having English accents in a catholic area and called Proddy b@stards and attacked. The whole experience of living there was horribly traumatic. I’m still atheist and take no sides, I just ended up living there due to stepfathers connections. I feel bad for both sides. I pray things are better now for everyone there on all sides.

Cillit Bang They weren't "legitimate" targets, thats why the IRA phoned warnings and even apologised when civilians were hurt or killed. Contrary to the propaganda of "thugs" and "baby killers", killing civilians was never popular amongst republicans at the very least because they lost support each time. Politicians, soldiers, cops, rival paramilitarys, plus government and economically important buildings - they were legitimate targets. You can see from the stats who favoured and killed more innocent people - loyalists by a good stretch. The IRA killed more people over-all, true, but the majority of that number were "legitimate" targets, around 30-35% were civilians, roughly 700 people. Loyalists killed near 1000 people (half as much as the IRA / INLA) near 90% of that were innocent people, so near 900 people. You can add the death caused by the Brits and RUC to the British body count or not, either way the "British" people in that conflict definitely killed more innocent people. Wind your neck in mate. Irish people fought for their freedom and to rid themselves of an oppressive foreign colonial regime. Loyalists fought to uphold it. Maybe if Irish people didn't have to fuckin march for civil rights and we were treated as equals we might have accepted British rule but you'se never learn. Always thinkin you're above republicans - even by law not too long ago. The Irish haven't got much to thank Britain for, Read history and educate yourself on the sort of thing you support. I don't fully support the IRA but there are goals all Irish people share with groups like these. And given Britains bloody tyrannical history on this island don't expect us to forget or move on, "its all in the past"... nah, we need to right a few wrongs before we can move on.
@Itsjustmyselfsoitis6 жыл бұрын
Lee Bartlett Why'd you leave out all the loyalist massacres? Do you'se get taught that list of La Mon, Kingsmill etc? I keep seein loyalists repeat the same list. Enniskillen wasn't right, they should have targeted the soldiers better. And Omagh? Why'd the cops not lift the fella that done it, because touts gave up the guys name BEFORE it went off? Europa could be viewed as an 'economic target' so in a sense it was 'legitimate' from the IRAs point of view anyway. Thats why they blew up the London Stock-Exchange, Manchester and plenty of places in Belfast city centre. If busniesss' stopped operating that meant bit by bit they fucked with the British economy. Thats why they were referred to as 'economic targets' - civilians did die, but the goal wasn't that. You sit there like you're so moral when fact is YOUR side killed even more civilians and they did it intentionally. And don't think i'm defending killing civilians, i'm just puttin this in perspective. Tell me mate, what do you think of this quote; "at the time, the attitude was that if you couldn't get an IRA man you should shoot a Taig, he's your last resort" - Gusty Spence (UVF commander)

Are the one's who really peace, but they see no other way to try nd change their situations besides trying to spill enough blood to cause change! To be honest history has shown, weather its from the American war or independence or the other wars in history. Spilling enough blood will eventually bring change!! We all need to learn how to live with each other, no matter ur religion, race, how much money u hve, or any other bs like tht! It just happens that they are protestant. I grew up in the middle of this, now i live in Oklahoma. I come back each year to see my family & I've lots of protestant friends. Protestant vs Catholic is not exactly right. Most get on now the army are gone. It's nationilists vs loyalists. I know IRA members with protestant family members & Protestants, like Tony Blair who is Catholic.🤷♂️I know personally a fella named, "the bycycle bomber" who cycled around London planting bombs. @@KyleInOklahoma that is incorrect, half the Irish population is of Norman (old English) decent, and they have fought for Irish freedom since the 16th Century. Not to mention the Protestant freedom fighters such as the United Irishmen, and the Protestant parliamentarians like Henry Grattan who did the same. Being decedents of colonisers has nothing to do with it. Our nation has absorbed every immigrant group from the Vikings, to the Normans, and even Protestants. We are a mixture of many groups, as is every nation. National identity is an idea, and those who subscribe to it are patriots irregardless. A prime example of this would be Sir Roger Casement, a member of the Protestant Ascendancy and high ranking British Civil Servant, who turned his back on all that to be become an Irish patriot, and be executed because of his role in the 1916 Rising
