I only found The Divine Comedy about 4 years ago. I don’t know why I relate so much to this song - I can listen to it 1000x in a row. The lyrics are funny yet sad, sarcastic yet empathetic… but mostly an allegory on how anyone’s life can fit one cliché or another. And when we wake up… we’re 70. 63? 53? Enter Neil Hannon’s voice, the melody and the violin. Perfection.

It is amazing how a song can be sarcastic and emphatic, funny and sad - all at the same time.

I still haven't figured out why exactly this touches me so much... - Maybe because it is so authentic? Because of the great way of singing, the voice? Anyways - whenever I hear this I get goosepimples - over and over... - and I can't stop clicking this! ... like a TeleTubby - Again - Again!!

I was wondering recently why Neil Hannon hasn't received a knighthood. He deserves it for sure. Now I see his upcoming CD release is called "Bang goes the Knighthood". Looking forward to hearing it. Way to Go Neil...beautiful, beautiful musician.

Neil Hannon was born in Derry in Northern Ireland. He moved with his family to Enniskillen, in County Fermanagh, in 1982. So if you don't mind, and if you will allow me this once, we'd like to claim him as our own, up North... :-) Though if I may paraphrase from "Sunrise", "Who cares where national borders lie Who cares whose laws you're governed by Who cares what name you call a town Who'll care when you're six feet beneath the ground...?"

Possibly about "Bubbles" Rothermere, widow of newspaper proprietor Lord Rothermere. She could be found around London nightspots, a funny/sad eccentric figure who - like the other artistic creation she inspired, "Bubbles" De Vere of 'Little Britain' - was living on past glories as an actress, boozing on dwindling life insurance money and battling obesity and a heart condition. She passed away in 1992.

Oh sorry....I didn't realise you wanted to bring sectarianism into it. I repeat, for you are obviously hard-of-understanding: Though if I may paraphrase from "Sunrise", "Who cares where national borders lie Who cares whose laws you're governed by Who cares what name you call a town Who'll care when you're six feet beneath the ground...?"
