Yatra Parchi: Every pilgrim needs to obtain a Yatra Parchi (permit slip) from Katra. This can be done either online or at the Yatra Registration Counter in Katra. The Yatra Parchi is free of cost and must be carried throughout the journey.
Timing: The trek can be started at any time of the day or night, as the pilgrimage is open 24/7. However, mornings and evenings are the most popular times to begin the ascent.
2. Trek Route Highlights:
The trek can be divided into several key stages:
Katra to Banganga (1-2 km):
The first checkpoint on the trek.
Pilgrims can take a dip in the sacred Banganga River, believed to have been created by Goddess Vaishno Devi with an arrow.
Battery-operated vehicles start from this point.
Banganga to Charan Paduka (1.5 km):
This is a small temple where pilgrims can see the imprints of Mata Vaishno Devi’s feet.
The trek is moderately steep at this point.
Charan Paduka to Adhkuwari (about 3.5 km further):
Adhkuwari is a significant stop. It is believed that Goddess Vaishno Devi meditated here for nine months inside a cave called Garbh Joon before vanquishing the demon Bhaironath.
Pilgrims often take a break here to visit the cave and rest.
There is a queue system for visiting the Garbh Joon cave, and the wait time can sometimes be long.
