Did you know? The average American marriage lasts 8.2 years, but here’s the twist: divorce rates are dropping and marriage rates are climbing! In 2022, divorce rates fell to 2.4 per 1,000 people, half of what it was in 2000. Are we getting better at this love thing, or what? 🤔

2020 is not a good year to compare stats though. 2018 would be more accurate. Covid may have spiked rates of divorce.

Many divorces also could not be granted during Covid because the courts were closed or running very slowly.

2.4 divorces per 1000 people is a shitty stat. Kids are people too and are probably included in that population figure. What matters is divorces per 1000 marriages.

Why are divorces seen so negatively? It's better for people to get divorced if their marriage isn't working than staying together and suffer.

It’s not negative to get divorced when a divorce is necessary, but divorce will always have a negative connotation because it signifies that the marriage has failed.

And spouses are supposed to live up to their vows, but when they get toxic, the other person should have everyone’s support to get out, IMO

If it’s per 1000 marriages then it wouldn’t matter what the number of marriages per year were because you’re just measuring divorce rates. But if that number is declining because people are just choosing to stay together for shorter term say 5-10 and not get married because that’s what suits them then that’s a whole new statistic, but that doesn’t matter because this is just measuring marriage/divorce. But that probably has something to do with it, declining societal pressure etc

I think many people aren’t getting married that’s why it’s a smaller divorce rate. It makes sense. People see the cost of getting married, the cost of divorce and many other things. Divorce rates I think will always be high.

I wonder if these numbers taken to account that multiple people get married and divorced many times over.

Our outlook as a couple is divorce is not an option and that has made us put in a lot more effort to communicate and keep our relationship strong. Cheating or abuse would be an exception but I trust my partner.

I feel like people don’t want to put an effort into the marriage. And so easy option is divorce and everyone wants easy way.

That’s debatable. Bcuz everyone’s marriage is different and everyone’s take and choices on “difficulties” in a marriage is different. Also that’s assumptions. Just bcuz a divorce rate is high, doesn’t mean those people didn’t put in effort or anything into fixing it.

My husband and I have been married 51 years this year! It’s hard work. It’s not all lovey-dovey 100% of the time. I’ve worked with children for 17 years in a school setting and several of them have chosen to have a child before they get married. Where has that come from - Hollywood I think. They see others do it and so it becomes the norm. I could say more but I leave it up y’all to discuss this.
