I am a beginner to woodwork, the main test I have with this bundle kzbin.infoUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz is that I think that its hard to settle on a choice of the plan and outline to use as there are a large portion of them there. After adding shingles to our roof (back in the hand nailing days) there were nails all over around the perimeter of the house from the removed shingles. My dad took a lawn mower handle and attached a long magnet between the wheels. He walked around the house pushing the 'magnet mower' until no more nails were picked up. One among many of his simple but genius ideas. He would have loved your version.

One of the things i do is blasting concrete floors with metal pellets for surface preparation and they need to be collected so they don't start rusting and create rust spots and such all over For that i use a 3 wheeled rectangular "cart" with a lever that'll drop a magnet onto a steel bottom plate that'll pick up all the pellets and if you need to empty it you just pull up the lever (there's also versions with electromagnet which just use a little switch

Nice build. I have two rolling magnets from Harbor freight. One about 1 ftv wide and the 2 foot wide. The larger one is a magnet sitting in a box. By pulling up on a separate handle what is stuck to the bottom is released. Works great for yard and large area applications.
@davidfrank2824 Жыл бұрын
I have the store-bought version of this. It was one of the better things that I decided to buy at the last minute. It works basically on the same principle as yours. There's a wheel on both ends and it's about 36 to 48 inches long. When you run it over the area this magnet is super strong. When you build up enough material you go to where you want to drop whatever the magnet picked up all you need to do is pull the handle. It moves the magnet away from the bottom of the boom and pretty much drops everything it picked up. I love the version that you made. I think I'm going to make one. I do a lot of metal work and a smaller version of what I have would be perfect to clean up.

In another video, I saw someone making a piece that was placed on the floor like a burrow, connected to the vacuum cleaner; it had magnets at the entrance. It would sweep the entire workshop directly into the opening of the piece, where the parts would stay on the magnet, and the sawdust would be sucked up by the vacuum cleaner.

Great idea with the tray. I do something similar but much more crude. Inside of a computer hard drive is a niodinium magnet with a little hole in the end of it. I screw those onto the bottom of a dowel rod and sweep around the floor. It doesn't pick up nearly as much as yours does though

While every shop needs a magnetic floor sweep, and this one's beautifully executed with the plastic cover and comfortable grip handle, a faster and higher-volume approach when there's a shopwide large mess (or to prevent one building up) could be to make an attachment to the end of a shop vac/dust extractor's inlet hose, that's like one of those long-handled dust pans where you use a broom to sweep debris into it. It would have a top cover over the dust pan part, to make it more like a squished funnel for directing and strengthening the vaccuum air flow, and the vaccuum hose attached to the back of it. It would also have an inline magnetic trap area between the back of the dustpan and the vaccuum hose connector, branching off of the main air flow (picture a plumbing P trap with cleanout plug, but make the cleanout plug's stub pipe much bigger, and magnetize the plug), with the magnets in this trap that would capture the metal bits, allowing those to drop out of the air flow and be captured by the magnets, while the dirt, sawdust and shavings continue on up the hose and into the dust extractor. Vaccuum alone may not be sufficient to move all the metal into the magnetic trap area, but picking up the dustpan by its long handle periodically and tipping it back would allow them to slide from the dustpan part back into the magnetic trap. The bottom of the magnetic trap could have a removable cleanout plug or lid, where the magnets are embedded in the lid and covered as your plastic part here has, for easy clean-off. This dust pan/dust extractor floor sweeping port could be left standing over to the side, and when there's a mess to sweep up, simply attach the vaccuum hose and sweep the debris into it, tipping any metal back into the magnetic trap, then remove the vaccuum hose or turn off the shop vac, unscrew the magnetic lid on the bottom of the trap, take it to the bin where you're putting the reclaimed metal bits, and remove its plastic shield over the magnets, as you did here, to dump the metal.

Interesting take on a magnetic screw finder. With all the fold away tools you had, there must have been quite a few gaps for dust and dirt to fall through. My workshop gets like that all the time, I swear all the wood dust in the factory makes its way to my bench.
@StormGod29 Жыл бұрын
Great design as always. My first thought is this needs to be able to be plugged into your floor attachment for your shop vac. I like the idea of doing the first pass with the tool itself, but then add it to the shop vac to capture anything that got away.

Sweep the entire floor and put one shovel full in a five-gallon bucket that's 2/3 full of water. Skim all the stuff that floats into the trash and repeat until you've gone through everything. This will of course also separate non-ferrous metals from wood chips/dust.

See that it's great for your probably single use purpose, but if you wanted to improve the design for future iteration (could modify existing one), handle should be flipped for the floor version: should flip it so its on top of the pipe, and braced by a forearm support underneath (like a crutch or metal detector is designed). The way you have it at the moment puts a lot of load through your wrist (can see it when you hold it up at 07:34) - probably fine, but just accidentally banging it into something (eg a table leg) whilst using it could seriously sprain your wrist
@Jacksparrow4986 Жыл бұрын
I guess for the workshoo he got he won't use it for long periods and it's okay. Reducing they weight of the magnet holder could help, especially the tray seems overbuilt - I would have used an icecream box or something, glued some washers in where they are attracted to the magnets and be done with it.

The big downside of a magnetic approach is that not everything is magnetic. Stainless steel often isn't and neither is aluminium. I prefer a weight based approach, make a wide opening for your vacuum (perhaps a bucket or so) and vacuum everything away. The sawdust will quickly get sucked away whereas most metal will stay

I'm all about making jigs and fixtures to increase repeatability or to make common jobs easier but you have a very small shop and what would appear to be a one time ( or very infrequent ) problem here. This "solution" is way too complicated for it's intended purpose. Just get down with a hand held magnet or sweep up the garbage ( and run it through a small piece of hardware cloth if you have it, definitely don't go out and buy it ) and chuck it out. This smacks of a project designed to just be something to make a video about. Not something that's actually useful.
