Before 2023 draws to a close, I wanted to share this unreleased piece of my history with you which I’ve sat on for exactly 20 YEARS❗️Raw footage of me competing in a Gemini DJ battle at the 2003 PLASA expo in Earls Court, London 🇬🇧
Although not a major competition, it was a big win for me at the time as a young amateur DJ 👦🏾🎧 and gave me the confidence to continue exploring my relationship with music 🎶 which completely changed the course of my life 🚀
Coincidentally. I also won the competition 2 years prior in 2001, completely by surprise after entering with just 1 days practice 🤷🏽‍♂️🥇 Being young and naive, arrogance got the better of me and I raced to defend my title the following year in 2002, expecting an easy victory but I inadvertently wrecked my car on the way to the competition 💥🚗 and then completely botched my performance on stage, earning only 3rd place 😒🥉 But as they say, “failure will teach you much more than success ever will”, so the footage you see here is me having returned once more in 2003 to reclaim the title and redeem myself after the humbling I probably deserved 🥲

I'd say even in 2003 you were still light years ahead of me up to present day on your skill set. I wish I could scratch and cut records like that. Pure skill really showing what one can do even at a time with less technology. I love it.

Man I wish I could see Djs perform like this again in 2023. Everything is a Dj controller now and I barely ever see a Dj mix music like this or more with all the tools they have on hand in their tool box. I dj as a hobby and still mostly use CDJs yet. But after practicing since 2001 I need to get back to doing it again and getting better. Gone to parties and people enjoyed what I mixed but it's not good enough for my standards. I want to be better and I'd love to get into the turntablism aspect of this too. Sadly life gets in the way and I'm distracted by so much stuff that other things get put on the back burner.

Hey Angelo, where does one go to find Dj contests to enter? I’m trying to get in…. & how long does it usually take for you to come up with a routine? I’m assuming it’s based on the criteria of the contest like Gymnastics you gotta hit o backspin , a triple lutz, and don’t go outside the lines😆
