I live 20 minutes from their shop. They used to let you come in and pick stuff up, but since covid they no longer will. I discovered this when stopped in for an N64 controller a few months back and managed to get them to sell me one since I was there and it was saving them the hassle of shipping it, but they were pretty begrudged about it. So I picked one out with a good stick, it was gross, the kid said they'd clean it up for me while I took care of payment. It came back in basically the same condition. All they did was give it a quick wipe down, which didn't even get all the gunk off it. The casing seam was still caked with the previous owners sweaty hand cheese. I had to tear it down and do a proper cleaning when I got it home. Totally not worth the $42. They're crooks, and the faster the community as a whole knows it the better.

In my work I like to get right down to all the little details and return the product in far better condition. I have a bunch of bad retro game stores around me. And just as many good ones. DK Oldies just had the gumptcha to move online and market. It's like how I used to play Magic the Gathering at a store in Ohio called Alter Reality Games. There were 5 other card shops and tabletop stores I frequented and they all went under except for ARG because they moved to online sales. StarCityGames started out the same way with a bit more success. I think you'd have to be a fool not to do online sales. Low risk of theft/shoplifting, especially if your return address is a PO Box and your warehouse location is kept secret. You can handle all transactions privately without having to deal with problem customers. Brick and Mortar can only market to the immediate area. Even in an urban area, there's only 50,000 ish people in my 5 mile radius. I get half a million clicks on my ebay listings per month. DK Oldies is in a less populated area but gets millions of views on their KZbin videos. It's all a numbers game with retail. DK Oldies basically has the growing pains of getting tons of exposure from their marketing, but in reality they're one of the bad ones. Not many stores get this much light cast on them.

@@JohnnyRedgrave Probably many of their customers, now that the dishonesty/misrepresentation and therefore fraud has become public knowledge. Warranty law requires the protected item/service to be as it is listed, and since they're calling these (and charging a premium for) as refurbished, that means the warranty is void, and they are in breach. That's why I expect to see a class action lawsuit against them at some point.
@ThisIsSrsBsnsMan Жыл бұрын
It’s not sleezy at all. There’s a year long warranty. What’s stopping me from buying a console, taking out a part I need and replacing it with the broken part I have? If the console doesn’t work, and the sticker is on, then it’s clear that it’s on DK. They’re stupid for not cleaning things thoroughly though if they’re gonna put a sticker on it.
@ArtemisKitty Жыл бұрын
@@ThisIsSrsBsnsMan The word warranty guarantees that a product will remain in the same fully functional condition it was sold in, which DKOldies itself states as working, cleaned, and refurbished. Not all, if any, of the items they sell fit this description, so it cannot be covered. They themselves have violated the warranty already by expressing the item as being something other than it is. You can't sell something as guaranteed to work properly for a year when it doesn't work to begin with. The fact that they sell products in varying conditions makes it fraudulent. For a warranty to be expressed, the item must be represented accurately AND be identical or comparable from a legal standpoint to ALL items given the same warranty. The laws don't let you pick and choose which items will match and which customers just get screwed by it. They ALSO have shown no indication whatsoever of a license authorizing them as a warranty provider to even offer said warranty. It's very dry reading, but all warranties are FRAUGHT with terms and conditions imposed by law. It's no more genuine than if the sticker said "Made on Mars out of solid gold". Edit: Also... They're an American company. Removing stickers DOES NOT void warranties, expressed or implied, in America. Stating that removing the sticker would violate a warranty is a federal offense. The company representative who stated that broke the law by doing so. It's been this way since 1975. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act allows not only removal of stickers, but expressly protects opening your electronic devices without fear of losing the warranty.

Every DKOldies order I've made I've had to repair, clean, or refurbish myself. I have even gotten fully corroded game cartridges from them at least twice, and had to do at least one return on every order. Their CS is amazing, but I only know that because their initial product deliveries are AWFUL. The copy of Mario Kart for the GBA I got from them was completely corroded through, with all the traces eaten completely off of the board. The casing of the cartridge was still full of dirt and liquid. There's absolutely no way it could have ever worked in that state. They were quick to replace it, even allowing me to attempt to save it by bypassing traces and soldering new lines in, but they never should have shipped a game in that state. The most recent awful one was they sent me a pair of PS2 controllers that were absolutely coated in a centimeter thick layer of OILY GOO and rusted all over. They are absolutely *not* worth what they charge, and they very clearly don't clean, test, or even look at stuff before sending it off.

You're the only KZbinr so far that explained in detail the difference between what "refurbished" seems to mean to DKoldies and what it actually means to you/us. Other KZbinrs just rant about not being refurbished, which IMO it seemed to be a HUGE misuse of the word by DKoldies in the beginning, but it's becoming abundantly clear that they actually know what the word means, by launching several videos/shorts in the last days in a failed attempt to smuther other videos exposing their practices.
@austinzuspann6647 Жыл бұрын
I would say their business practices seem to be intentionally deceptive. The real problem is that there is no LEGAL definition for what "Refurbished" actually means. As it sits, it could mean anything from simply being "tested" all the way up to a full restore. The quality of said refurbishment is going to vary wildly from company to company. Technically speaking, DKOldies isn't scamming anyone because, from a purely legal standpoint, their consoles ARE refurbished. They may not be up to my personal standards but again, there are no laws keeping them from selling a console that is only tested as "refurbished" because there is no legal definition or standard for it. Refurbished is just a made up word companies use to make consumers feel more confident about buying used products. Either we as a community have to hold companies to a higher standard, or advocate for changes in the language of the law to prevent companies from deceiving consumers.

How is everyone missing the fact that they say “cleaned” in the description? Sure there are many ways they could claim they are refurbished, but not cleaning it and selling it as such is clearly false advertising or just straight up fraud. Remember you are PAYING for that service. Hence the increased prices they charge. There isn’t a judge on this planet that would look at all these consoles and say they were cleaned as advertised. Now onto the term refurbished. In the retro repair community it is well established that means basic maintenance. Cleaning, replacing wear parts, replacing broken parts, re-greasing. This can include belts, gears, capacitors, lasers, pins, hinges and numerous other things. This is very easily argued in courts as there are mountains of videos by now showing exactly what these aging systems need to continue to function. In time they all will fail without some sort of refurbishment and that is what people are expecting when they pay the higher than normal prices for these consoles.

I paid around $110 for an A01 PS3 with 3 original controllers. Delidded, repasted & cleaned the system and replaced the batteries in and cleaned the controllers. I also installed a +30% fan mod while I had it apart. You just gotta look for the deals and if you're comfortable do the refurbishing work yourself.

A KZbinr bought a refurbished PS3 and when he opened it up it was grime and nasty, dkoldies response was “your not supposed to open up the console but this time we will make an acception”

I always classified a used console being sold "As is" and Refurbished as "Opened, Cleaned, any problems fixed if needed".. so when I see it isn't at least cleaned out inside, I don't consider it refurbished, but used.

Jon, it is because of the fact that you also take systems apart that I subscribed to your channel! Sure, it makes sense if you're hired to fix systems that you would not spend the whole day on one, BUT as an end user with some electronic skills, we can fix our systems ourselves because of you! Thank you!

The worst one was Jacob R’s PS3. That PS3 was so dusty and dirty that I actually think that would have been a safety hazard with how bad it was.

I think the reason they charge so much is to go out and offer more money to people to buy their collection and then they try to compensate by charging ridiculous prices.
@TheRolling123 Жыл бұрын
That could be part of it plus they wanna cut corners for a profit
@matchesmalone79 Жыл бұрын
When I buy used, I prefer it "used" rather than "refurbished," tbh. Refurbished usually means the casing has been opened, and it's been messed with in some way. Usually, the item is made to work for as cheap as possible repair cost, which would also mean replaced with cheap parts.
@DSSeraph Жыл бұрын
Don't get them wrong, they know EXACTLY what refurbishing vs used is. They just don't care, and don't do it, because it cuts into their profit margins and until people with an audience started lighting a fire under their collective ass', more often than not they would have been sending consoles to nostalgic soccer mom's and similar folks that wouldn't know the difference and, especially with the sticker scare tactic, would never open the console to find out, so long as it did the bare minimum of running a game. Saying things are "refurbished" was just them taking a slice of Kraft American cheese from a package and putting a "super premium select 100% free range dairy blend" sticker on it and selling it for more than the price of the entire pack they took it from. It's a tactic to try and veil their ridiculously marked up prices in "premium value" that the vast majority of people paying won't have the knowledge to call them out on and fall for hook line and sinker.

I have the same mindset. Whenever I see criticism on the condition of their items I agree with it, but a lot of that criticism is almost always followed by a "and they also..." with personal gripes. Yes, they did a bad and should be judged by that but it looks like others who already disliked them are just piggy backing off of this.

Yeah lying to your customers isn't something I'd defend as a business owner. Also they're artificially inflating the resale market by selling items they are promising are refurbished and they're not. Now other shops might feel emboldened to do the same thing which is bad.

The problem I have with just about ALL of the KZbinrs who claim to have been scammed all have 1 issue... They don't ever show a proper unboxing. They all claim they got it, opened the box, then decided to make a video on it. It discredits their validity and, leads me to believe that it is a cheap shot for views. It's why I come to this channel because I know it isn't for the views. This channel always has had high integrity.

I remember when I got a 'refurbished' ps3. My daughter and I were excited to play, but as soon as I turned on the console dust shot out and went everywhere. My daughter had a mini asthma attack, and I just sent that crap back. I'm glad they are finally getting exposed. Also, how can u say they made a mistake when they upload videos showing them cleaning consoles, they make it very clear that they know what refurbished means and yet they can't be bothered to wipe down some dust.

i have a theory: because DKoldies is really big operation & they don’t want to spend even more money, they skimp out on refurbishing there consoles they sell. and that also explains why there prices everything is so much higher then a local mom & pop store or even on ebay

Another problem for them will be that there are fake discounts. No matter when you go to the site, everything is supposedly discounted and always for the same price. As far as I know, fake discounts are also illegal in the USA. That alone should set off alarm bells

DKoldies pretending to let Jacob R slide because they know they cant uphold their illegal warranty stickers jus thought what they told Kreesky was just as crazy!!! You're saying that refurbish is just opening up the console and fixing something, not necessarily cleaning it thoroughly or apply new thermal paste. The DKOldies problem is they are posting videos of them thoroughly cleaning and going above/beyond BUT consumers aren't getting any such services as they just send consoles as is with a warranty sticker on it.

This is so sad for me. It is so hard to find good resellers in the retro market! Either you’re willing to pay premium or you’re getting a product with questionable quality. Guess the best way to play retro is to already have the console and pray the games you buy aren’t scratched.

The same game over here at the CeX store (where you can see the game before buying and which is complete), is £40, which is about $47
