I wish this was a real thing to buy off of Amazon. Great idea and so beautifully made. Can't wait to see the second part of your tome creation. 🤩

I have seen 2 other makers do this exact project. 1 did it the traditional way. It was amazing and should last a century, but I don't plan on becoming a professional book binder to do it. Another did it the quick amd dirty way. She got a cool looking book, but over time, those 3 volumes will definitely come apart. This is the best of both methods. It is much easier than the professional way, but should last as long under similar use. GREAT method for the average DIY who wants a book that will actually hold up to real world use.

This is 100% what I have been looking for and had no idea to just search for exactly this. I've wanted to combine 3 rule books into a single leather bound tome. Now I'm a little less worried about ruining nearly $100 in paper

Awesome! I did this with one of my hardcover Stormlight Archive book. Instead of just sawing the notches into the spine I used my heat gun to melt the glue so I could take 9 pages at a time, thus making fakeish signatures. Great video!

I really want to do this with a real book, with real signatures and whatnot. I bet I could get a nice curved spine that way too.

Oh I'm so annoyed! You did a marvelous job... But I've been working on mine for 5 years off and on, still havent finished it. I made the mistake of taking the glue off (soooo much Xacto blading!) and creating a new perfect bind. I even have the bookmark ribbons, though they're differently colotted to match the books they come from. I'm soooo stealing from you. This looks amazing. Props!

it was missing to show how you made the spine, after reinforcing its seam.
@johnp1806

Out of curiosity, how hard would it be to separate chunks of pages and reorganize them, if for instance someone wanted to make a complete player's guide of each class all together, the backgrounds and feats all together, races all together, and so on. Other than the obvious significant time investment organizing such, would the different bindings need a lot more attention, or would it be a similar (relatively straightforward) process of sewing it together as shown here?
@TheWoodenOtter
@TheWoodenOtter 3 жыл бұрын
That's actually a very interesting idea. I think if you spent some time looking at the pages you'd want together, you could carefully cut them apart. The issue is that pages are printed double sided and so you may end up with page one of a section at the back end of another section and cause confusion. In theory it would just be a matter of sewing your separated section back together on the spine cords.

@@TheWoodenOtter so as long as you didn't mind the occasional weird disjoint in pages, or aesthetic things like font or background being different, as long as it was lined up well it would still work, you think?
@TheWoodenOtter
@TheWoodenOtter 3 жыл бұрын
I think it would work. One other thing to keep in mind is that the few pages you try to separate, the more likely you are to damage them. One page will be impossible because you need multiple pages to sew through, but even 2 pages would be very difficult to cut out of the book without destroying.

Good job. Did you use the glue of the original perfect binding to sew them together? I would assume its not that sturdy of a technique,how well does it fare almost a year after?
@TheWoodenOtter
@TheWoodenOtter 2 жыл бұрын
It hold up remarkably well! The perfect binding is reinforced with a little glue and cloth/leather on the back on the spine, and it holds the stitching well. Though I admit that the book doesn’t get heavy use these days.

Old video, I know, but the creator is wrong. The books are, in fact, stitched signatures. Had he taken two minutes to examine the books, he would know this. Yes, there is glue on the spines, but that is normal for stitched signatures. If you don't put glue on the spines, there is nothing to hold the mull to the spine of the text block. The stitching on the three books does not line up, which creates its own problem but one that is not insurmountable. How someone who claims to be a bookbinder could miss this is beyond me.

Bookbinding glue is PVA/EVA, and Elmer's is made of the same stuff! It's not acid-free/archival quality like actual bookbinder's glue, so it will eventually discolor/decompose the covers, that will probably be decades from now.
