It's hard to think I'm guilty of pretty much all the Don'ts here. I filmed with an iPad for a long time because it was originally owned by my Grandmother who passed away in 2017, but now I use a 4K Phone Camera, but I still don't use a Tripod because I prefer versatility over anything else, and I do always go to the same locations, whichever ones are the closest to where I'm staying. UTA FrontRunner at Salt Lake Central, Rail Runner at Santa Fe Depot, Tri-Rail at Delray Beach, and all the NorCal Railroads at San Jose Diridon. And it's hard to resist the urge to foam when you get blasted in the face by a mighty-fearsome Tri-Rail K5LA.

You deserve a like. The railfan community has been using this term (Foamer) for a long time. Come on they are just new railfans. I would never call any new railfan a Foamer.

Foamer is actually a railroad employee's term for railfans.

@@CAMPINGWITHMRBNSF I started railfanning in 1968. A railroad employee said I was a former. I asked him what he met by that he said if you like trains and take pictures 0f trains, them your a foamier. He said railroaders don't like us because they think we know more than they do. He also said us hanging around the tracks encourage other people to do so. When other railfans call other railfans foamer, it's because they think they know it all. So they are the foamers. Not you or a lot of other railfans out there.

@@davidmcclintock7819 did some research. that would of been true that employees would call railfans Foamers back in the 1960s, but now with social media around it looks like railfans have changed what foamer means a little bit.

Another don’t I would put in here is when it comes to a train info thread that you’re in, make sure your info is consistent and accurate. If there’s anything railfans hate it’s bad info and speculation, they will chew you out like bubble gum for it

Very well made video! You raise a great point about being original and abusing a spot. I know one guy in my railfanning community who, I kid you not, uploads a video of a regular freight run almost every single day for the past 5 or so years straight at a commonly railfanned station, and almost never railfans anywhere else. I would definitely call myself a foamer, but I've never experienced any distinct toxicity in the railfan community, even if my circles on twitter. Frankly I've found that public transit enthusiasts, including railfans, tend to be really nice people that just enjoy talking about their hobby and new advancements

I was a bit of a foamer when CP 2816 came through my old stomping grounds after the fact, but it was HARD not to. I always dreamed of seeing a steam train run through my (old) backyard. On that note, you’d rejoice happily if your childhood dreams for ANYTHING came true!

Honestly, as much as America has different trainspotting "rules", the ones mentioned in this video are basically the same as in the UK. One I should add however, is no "tone wanking" which is basically doing that motion with your arm where you're asking for a horn.

There's a station on the NEC that I would love to go and film at: Princeton Junction. It's very popular because it's one of the few 150mph zones. But I personally have never been up there and would love to sometime soon.
