I remember long ago an interview with Colin Baker where he said words to the effect of: "I decided that I would play the Doctor as literally an alien from another planet and therefore he would see things slightly differently to human beings with a slightly different perspective". " He might for example be stepping over the bodies of innocent victims in the heat of a battle without battering an eyelid, but cry when he accidentally crushes a butterfly in the palm of his hand". Well I see a parallel here with him dismissing the death of his would be murderers with a humorous quip, yet feeling compelled to carefully reassemble the stretcher and put it back where he found it.
@CinemaBiohazard7 жыл бұрын
I think we need to reference Peter Capaldi here, where the Doctor often acts uncaring but does this to mask a very sensitive center. You can see it here with the look of disgust and horror he gives but then tries to detach himself from it with the quip.
@robertmcelwaine70246 жыл бұрын
I don't know, it seemed a bit out of character for the Doctor to be so blase about anyone's death, especially one so nasty. Those two men would have died in agony and where two subordinates merely doing their job. They thought he was dead and there was nothing to prevent him from attempting to sneak away when there back was turned. I liked Vengeance on Varo overall but that part doesn't sit quite right with me.

I think what made people angry was that the Doctor did not express any remorse over the guards even though he may not have been directly responsible for their deaths. I can understand where they are coming from but at the same time people automatically jump to the conclusion that he killed them when that was not the case, since he almost took a dip in the acid bath himself. That makes me wonder though if the Doctor dies via acid bath can he even regenerate? He would still be in the acid so...??

I honestly understand the backlash to this scene, but I like with actors in modern Who, I can't really blame Colin Baker for this. I can tell that he was playing defensive here, but I can easily see how others would think he was trying to kill the guards. That was just bad directing, I don't know what the director was thinking.
