If the man was lying PRONE on the floor, the shot in the forehead would not be visible. The man was SUPINE. Prone means face down, supine means on one's back.

She might be intelligent enough to realize that the mess in the back of his head was due to his having been shot in the forehead. If he'd been shot in the mouth or cheek the jaw would probably have shattered or at least made a different mess. However, I suspect that the author did indeed mean 'supine'.
