Why would I EVER go vegan? To tank my testosterone and vitamin D levels, lose lean muscle mass/increase body fat, raise my blood pressure, weaken my now insanely strong immune system, and have my body regularly break down from chronic arthritis and frequent injuries? Because that's what decades of a "plant-based" diet did for me, while I got to where I am today on an "animal-based" (pretty much carnivore) diet. The last 5 years I have been WAY more physically, metabolically, and immunologically fit at age 58 than I ever was for ANY 5 year period going back to my 20s - and I stay way more fit than most people half my age. Given what a spectacular FAILURE just being "plant-based" was for me, it would be INSANE to even think about going vegan. If veganism works for Dr. Kahn, he should keep doing it. But I'll pass, because "Results matter".

39:51 He knows damn well that vegan diet is a fasting and it is measurable. That’s the only reason why a vegan diet is able to reverse biomarkers in as little as 3 weeks. After the autophagy has done so, if one stays on a vegan diet then the body begins to cannibalize the healthy cells. When one asks the question, what is the optimal human diet? The answer is simple. The proper foods for humans are the ones that digest in stomach acid and are completely digested BEFORE entering the large intestine. Plants do not digest in stomach acid -PERIOD! Undigested plant material leaving the stomach carry with it all of the hydrochloric acid into the small intestine. If you’re not eating any fat (from animals) in the same meal, then there is no bile being released, to neutralise the stomach acid, otherwise the person will experience SIBO. Furthermore, plant matter has to ferment in the gut (large intestine) in order to be digested, before it can leave the body. This process of fermentation in the gut promotes alcohol production and a high rate of acetate production which promotes fatty liver. Plants fermenting in the gut only provides 6-9 % of the body’s nutritional requirements. That’s not enough to nourish the body, and why eating plants alone is a form of fasting. Only animal foods digest entirely and nourish the human body completely. Even if you’re not on a strict vegan diet and you’re doing a Mediterranean diet, all of those plant foods will restrict the body’s ability to absorb animal nutrients when plants and animal foods are combined in the same meal.

One question I would LOVE to ask a vegan like the doctor is this: Would you and Brian be having this conversation if our ancestors ate vegan diets throughout history? I think we all know the answer.

Too many fools afraid of losing out on getting their share of the brass ring. If he actually counseled against veganism some of his patients would at least consider it out of respect for his authority and the doctor-patient relationship. And even if they didn't, he could at least look at himself in the mirror

Dr. Joel Kahn looks much much older than his age. I don't think his plant-based diet is good for him. It makes no sense that one has to supplement so much and say it's the healthiest option. That sounds very fishy to me :) The only super healthy plant-based person I've seen is Novak Djokovic, But I'm sure he has to supplement a lot. Personally, animal based eating is the best for me. I do not supplement at all. I now mostly eat Red Meat, Liver, Oysters, Butter, Cheese, Full Cream Milk, Honey Coconut Oil, Cold Pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sauerkraut, and low oxalate fruits. Sadly I can't find Raw Dairy where I live. I've cut out all seed oils, refined sugars, ultra-processed foods, high oxalate foods. Optimal is definitely Animal Based :) I'm also a big fan of regenerative farming. I try and support those small farmers as much as possible. I stay clear of Big Food and Big Pharma. Definitely stay clear of anything Bill Gates has an interest in.

Don't forget Dr. Chaffee, Paul Saladino and the other influencers who do their blood work. I didn't hear him say much about the nutrients available only in meat. Maybe that explains why he is so slim and not muscular. The vegetarian and vegan influencers that are thriving and building muscle take numerous supplements to get what their diet does not provide.

Fun topic/ idea - for millions of years humans never took supplements. True. And until recently, humans could never deadlift 1000+lbs. Till recently humans could never look like Ronnie Coleman. And all sprinting records and distance records have been broken. Swimming records,...on and on. With "supplements" right or wrong, will help many reach levels that were previously unobtainable. Obviously many take it to extreme levels. For the average person, daily multivitamin/ mineral and a few supplements can be helpful. 99% of people don't know their vitamin mineral status.

Great interview. Wish you had asked, that trial he mentioned, ordinary people where half went vegan and half stayed on the crap normal diet - why did they not also have a keto or carnivore section….. that would be interesting. Anyone who gets off the normal crap diet will do better..Also, when he mentioned his recent patient whose bloods were ok, hey she was eating clean…. And a morbidly obese diabetic…. Huh ??? How does that work. Pretty happy being 90% animal base and over 70 pounds down for the past 4 years. Also would love to hear say just his HBA1C

My difficulty with veganism is that it can (mostly) work for very smart and committed people but a LOT of people arent as well educated/informed as they think they are. Particularly, a very large number of the folks worst affected by SAD just dont have the resources to get wholly plant based right and WILL get sick

Hey Brian, I've been following your podcast since episode 1 and love your content. I am almost 100% on board with the ancestral diet, but I am not fully convinced that I should ignore LDL cholesterol. If cholesterol has a lot of benefits in the body (and I believe it does) but also can cause heart disease for older individuals (I also believe this), it makes sense evolutionarily that high LDL cholesterol could be harmful after our reproductive age. Can you see how an ancestral diet may be the best diet to get us through our reproductive years, but not necessarily the best diet for the second half of our lives? I am in camp no-camp like you, so I will gladly change my level of red meat consumption in either direction. I am just not convinced by the science on either side of the issue.

@@simonmcintosh6565 Thanks for the reply. Doesn't the fact that many people will have a drop in LDL when they are near death skew the data? I would love to see a study where we look at LDL and compare that to death rates 10 years later. I think it is similar to the body weight issue. If an obese man loses 50 lbs during his last 6 months of life, that doesn't mean that weight loss increases all-cause mortality, but it may look that way in the data.
@aolsonx1
@aolsonx1 Жыл бұрын
@@Julian-xs8ncIs there an affordable way to test for oxidized LDL? I will definitely look into that.
@simonmcintosh6565
@simonmcintosh6565 Жыл бұрын
@@aolsonx1 that’s how it’s done. They’re not taking LDL as people die in hospital. When you go into hospital with high LDL with any viral or bacterial infection LDL drops as you burn through it to fight the infection. If you go in with low LDL you die. The studies are done with normal subjects and then you check up whenever as time goes on. The people who tested low on LDL die sooner. What you’ve requested- which is the most obvious way and basically how all these studies are done really is exactly what they do. These are not studies on LDL. They are studies on many bio markers with many subjects and the what was discovered over time is the inverse correlation of LDL to mortality.

He's very good at it and his practice will be successful and make money (people who come are having heart attacks - of course cutting out all the crap plus meat will be and improvement.) But he's been around enough to know fish and meat does not have to be avoided.

Much respect for having Dr. Kahn on. I try to listen to all sides of the nutrition debates and he is the only vegan that does not seem angry and pushy enough to shout down those with other views. That being said, I think you both missed the point. Your central argument is we must eat what got us here. However, seconds ago in evolutionary time, we lived to 35 years old. Medicine and science helped us live longer. It does not logically follow that the optimum diet is to eat how we always have. His central argument is focused solely on the diet that is best for atherosclerosis and longevity. However, eating just plants does not guarantee a long AND healthy life. Research shows that older adults need lots of protein to maintain muscle mass and prevent sarcopenia. The biggest cause of old people entering assisted living from which they never return is falls and bone breaks. Vegans preach less protein as we get older. They hate the protein argument, best gotten from meat, because it kills their message. In my opinion, it's about balance - the longest health span combined with the longest life span. For me, that means eating clean - mostly plants, with low glycemic fruits, along with grass fed beef and chicken and wild caught sardines, anchovies and salmon. If I die at 95 in my sleep while still exercising every day in great health, where I could have lived 10 more years in frailty, I'll take the former. Just my 2 cents.

Here’s the deception about double blind studies. No one knows the results, except those that are funding the research. 😉 So if those who are funding the study don’t like the results, they simply flip the the data, so that they will always achieve the results they’re looking for. It’s similar to how our elections work, but that’s an entirely different topic.

When he thought you were going to argue with him over vitamins, he raised his voice and cut off every sentence. He did that with other topics, too. You should have hit him with why carnivores require less vitamin C, but I know you don't like the carnivore diet, so I guess that's why. I think carnivore is fine, but I tend to be more keto and sometimes paleo. All the vitamins he takes are probably toxic and our ancestors didn't buy packets of polyphenols, which we don't even need. I love how he pretends he's not a zealot and not biased. LOL. Kahn gets all riled up when speaking of Ancel Keys, who's killed more people than anyone in history, and still going. Joel Kahn is an arrogant fool. I normally don't watch these vegan doctors, except to laugh at them. I like to watch the McDougall's channel ever so often because they look so awful. The brainwashing is unbreakable with all these types.
