The researcher in the video suggests that the average dog only knows about 10 words. I think that number is too low and think most dog owners would agree.
@TheMadhouseOfficial8 жыл бұрын
+Denise Hansen Absolutely. I'm certain my Alfie knows many things we say in general conversation, including names for people, places, actions, objects and emotions. He couldn't understand an in-depth discussion on philosophy, but nor would many humans.
@mr_slidey5 жыл бұрын
Well it IS just an average, my border collie (profile pic) knows a lot more than ten words, mostly without being taught but just by us saying them enough he could connect the word to the action or item etc. My Labrador is also quite clever although he doesn't connect the dots on his own as much as the collie. On the other hand, think about how many dogs are terribly "trained" and struggle to respond to their own name. I'd say 1 in 10 dogs I see going around are actually trained to a suitable standard.

Chaser was another BC who knew a great many names of her toys. She's passed on as had her master, but Neil Tysson de Grasse-the physicist-interviewed them and confirmed that she was one heck of a smart BC. Stanley Coren, the late dog expert stated that BCs are the smartest dogs.. So is your BC and no doubt mine too.

My Gem was an Aussie/BC mix. Like the Empath on the "TOS" episode 'The Empath', she was very empathic in that she could sense your moods or whether you were sick or not and either cheer you up or stay with you. She used to cheer up my little niece when she was sad or angry. My niece is now 38 and still remembers Gem. She has her own dog now, a Blue Heeler. I told her it was too bad she didn't teach Lily to do tricks like Skidboot. My next dog was a pure BC. She refused to respond to the name I gave her-T'Ami, a Vulcan female name-so I named her Tess Siobhan and she let me know she preferred that name instead. She not only let me know that I was Diabetic-I believe she could smell the different scents-but taught my next puppy, a r/w BC named Gypsy Rose Lee, how to do so too. One of Tess's sons, Max(well Smart) became a service dog for a little girl with CP. He let her know when she was going to have a seizure as well.

I forget the names, because he might have 4 or 5 pigs(I don't mean I forget it's a pig), but I can only remember "percy" etc. No idea how many he's got spread amongst my house, my folks & the beach house.....BC's are awesome. 💚💛

This experiment may also proof, that the dog is able to do more than learn names. A name is not more than a placeholder for an object. You could also say just "pig" and the dog brings "pig", because he has learned, that he always has to bring $name. But he always would bring $name, because thats training, not understanding. Verbs are far more important, because they stand for an action. To know what a verb means, the dog has to figure out the motive and wish of the speaker. That the dog can bring a new object means, that he might understand the concept of "bring" better than a 3 yo, because he knows he has to pick up the correct object, and he also understands, that there can be a new object, therefor he has figured out that the motive behind "bring" means an action and a need/wish ("look at this place and pick up $name") and thats why he is able to bring a new object, because he knows "bring" is the important issue. If the dog only would understand the names without the concept of "bring", he would be confused by a new word and try to bring something as he learned to do. They should teach him a few more commands like "hide" or "switch" and repeat this experiment to find out if he understands verbs. There is also a dog who can speak using buttons and this dog understands and uses adjectives, an even more abstract construct of speach than verbs.
