When the lady said it was like looking after a child with autism, I nodded so hard. She was on the money. A lot of what Max does translates to compulsions I had a little autistic kid. Hyperfixation on things, requirement for rigid routine and specific objects, lots of energy but only certain things that you want to spend it on. I still have all of this but I manage better now. Honestly, what a sweet dog. I'm glad Victoria didn't see it as something to punish but instead something to support and manage.

Yeah I was afraid someone would see that as offensive, but it really does make sense. I know plenty of functional adults with autism, and I know one person who probably can't ever live on his own-the range of autistic experiences is vast. But hyperfixations are a HUGE one. And the door licking is very much like a kind of stim or fidget.

I hate the phrase "I'm so OCD." Well, have you sat alone in your room crying because the thoughts are repeating so much in your head that it hurts & you want to put your brain in a blender? Yeah, that's the dark side of OCD. I have spent nights with my head in my hands crying because my OCD was badgering me so much. Edit: they think it's all neat & tidy but that's not all aspects of life for everyone with OCD, if it comes to cleaning my friend's house then I'm up for it but if it's mine I won't touch it, we are neat in certain things but very untidy in other things.

@@tyce3849 If it were that simple by distracting the dog with toys Max wouldn't be doing what he is. Its OCD its a compulsion and the impulse control goes right out of the window and your brain is locked onto it. I have bipolar disorder and PTSD and a few OCD traits when I go into an obsessive state of mind I become so fixated I can't see anything else around me but my obsession its difficult to get out of and mine are just traits and when my moods and state of mind change and become more stable that obsessive part of me subsides and I can get out of that obsessiveness. Now imagine what its like for someone with full blown OCD its constant with them they get no respite from it and not everyone can understand what they're going through.

As a dog trainer (in training) I am so happy to see that this couple is 100% willing to work with their dog and listen to Victoria. Sometimes clients are so hardheaded and unruly!

+flxutist-And it's heartbreaking that too many so-called owners are willing to give up on their dogs for much less than this couple. Max wasn't a bad dog, he just had OCD, he did certain things that not even he completely understood and he probably wasn't happy with being forever locked into these rigid, demanding compulsions. The owners knew Max wasn't a bad dog, and when Victoria told them their dog actually had OCD, they. . .listened. They were willing to do what it took to give their dog a better quality of life and if they kept up that training, Max easily would've gone on to be much healthier and even happier.

I've spent 10k replacing the damage my bulldog did over 5 years. He's now 6 and is currently asleep on the sofa, fully house trained (90% of the time), healthy, happy and My baby. Dogs are not a commodity, they are a life long commitment. My dog also used to hump and bite me and my partner before castration, now he's a completely different dog.

_Max_ didn't switch that reflection obsession to the carpet, it was involuntary. With OCD, it's not willful. As soon as you cut off one trigger, another one pops up from the depths of one psyche. Trust me, it's entirely against your will. They have done a brilliant job. Most of all, Max has done a brilliant job. OCD is heinous. There's good reason she allowed them 4x the regularly allotted time to work with Max. OCD is simply incredibly difficult to overcome. It takes time and immense patience. It's essentially whack-a-mole. Just when you think you've tackled a one part of it fully, another three issues come popping up out of the woodwork, lol...;)

I am currently seeing a therapist for it. Just when ''we'' managed to break through one of my habits, I fell ill, which, of course, was punishment for not following my usual routine and I had to start all over again. Don't even get me started on the compensating for things you haven't done (properly) and must now desperately try to even out; endless counting, repetition and doing everything all over again. Took me over 20 minutes to wash one wine glass.

we had a rescue dog that had ocd too and acted a lot like max. she wasn't obsessed with like, but she would frequently pace around rooms and dig at corners or spots in the floor. she was so sweet and we dont know what she was obsessed with, but being a border collie, she had a lot of energy and would go all day without any attention to food or to us.
