On this Dollop, Dave & Gareth sit down to discuss the military career of Hiroo Onada, a Japanese soldier during World War II, who did not believe the war had ended and survived on a mountain for 32 years. This is also a rare Reverse Dollop, where Gareth tells the story to Dave.

David's comic sensibility is underrated, he's fucking hilarious. Especially seeing him and his facial expressions. Love the dollop

Agreed! I saw them live and it really highlighted his comedic talent, much of which comes from his facial expressions which are lost in the audio-only versions.

Top loading the ads is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better. It allows the story to continue uninterrupted and doesn't disturb Gary's improvising. It's 3785320875087235 times better than having the story constantly interrupted. Just skip ahead, is it that much to ask? :/

People look at Hiroo Onada like he's crazy or stupid. He wasn't. He was committed. He was a product of his time and his training. Did he do bad things? Sure, but he thought he was still at war. The real idiots are the Japanese government officials who never thought to bring his immediate superior to the area to relieve him.
@a.scoob2
@a.scoob2 Жыл бұрын
No he was definitely stupid. When you’re 5 years in and you believe the enemy is so after you INDIVIDUALLY that they are sending multi flight campaigns to lure just you out. You are super stupid
@antonyduhamel1166
@antonyduhamel1166 Жыл бұрын
@@a.scoob2 Easy for you to say with the benefit of hindsight and rose tinted glasses. You aren't considering the culture he was raised in, how much something like "death before dishonour" affects a soldier on the ground, or how ingrained the belief in orders was. If he had been crazy, his commanding officer showing up to relieve him would have meant and done nothing. Instead, he followed orders crisply and exactly. Not crazy. Not stupid. Just a product of the times and culture he grew up in. Tragic.

As long as there's at least some maintenance, it's not going to just simply rot due to time. I have firearms far older than this story in perfect working order. Sure there might have been a bit of surface rust, but it's wood and steel. Keep it dry, keep some oil on the moving parts, and clean it after use, and you're good to go.

I love this podcast but comon guys, the Japanese did not try to surrender before the atomic bombs. They wanted Soviet mediation in the event of a surrender which their invasion of Manchuria kunda fucked. They had absolutely no desire to surrender to the United States.
@ashtonmcmullen6799
@ashtonmcmullen6799 5 жыл бұрын
SuperTelecom Japan was prepared to offer a conditional surrendering, with the condition being that Allies would not debase their emperor with war crimes. Both Truman and his predecessor were absolutely adamant on a non conditional surrender on Japan’s part, so they dropped the bombs. Following the war, it was decided the emperor wouldn’t be debased anyway. Also, Japan was anticipating a Soviet attack due to the erroneous movement of troops by the Soviets which was appearing to violate the non-aggression agreement.
@ashtonmcmullen6799

SuperTelecom Many modern historians agree that it was Stalin’s aggressive acts which were larger facilitators to Japan’s non-conditional surrender than the atomic bombs were.

@@justing7490 There is nothing better than a sentence that calls someone a moron with grammatical error. SURELY with the success of the podcast and their comedy careers in general it's not that their comedy isn't your thing: it's the population at large that is wrong.

@@alexmammoth2916 I think it's adorable when people come on to KZbin comment sections and try to s*** about grammar. Especially when the people are so stupid that they don't understand the difference between a grammatical and a syntax error. Even better than that, is when they are an idiot and don't realize that the phrase Target audience is both a singular and a plural, depending on how the person uses it. I could be talking about the audience as a whole, or the individuals that make up the audience. Good job being a dumbass that can't understand what theyre criticizing. despite all of that, your argument is still stupid, because you try to make the claim that this show is extremely popular based on the subscriptions to the channel. The problem with that argument is that this channel isn't only for this show. The channel has been around for a nearly decade. If anything, one could argue that the majority of their views are people who don't even like the show, they just clicked it because they got a notification that a new video goes up for the broader channel....
