I think that one of the main reasons why the Breen were able to hit Earth was because it was always intended as a one way trip. The Breen burnt out their warp engines, so that by the time the Federation knew what was going on the Breen fleet would be almost at their target. The Breen would also not have used any ship with the Energy Dampening Weapon, they couldn't take the risk of even one of them falling into Federation hands.

I completely agree and to add to your point I believe the Breen had a battle plan already in place for a surgical strike on earth

Wow! This is tight! Also the Alliance hasn't been pushed back all over. Just in the North. They still have that massive fishook in the 'center' and a strong advance to threaten the south. The Breen are only seemingly active in one major area so far, but they haven't fully deployed. however, it's also further from their home territory and supply bases, and they haven't had the years operating with the Cardassians to build up a logistical network like the Dominion has. So likely only so far their fleets can range before they're limited by attrition and supply. OTOH, the big effect is letting the Dominion redeploy all those assets in the nroth they had to keep there to defend in depth against the Romulans. The Romulans no longer have a forward base to attack and raid from so they'll have to withdraw back to Federation territory to continue operations. This lets a lot of the Dominion fleets that were tied down in those areas be resupplied and redeployed. It's given the Dominion a strategic reserve again of some fleets that are reasonably fresh that haven't had the heavy casualties of the last year of fighting. Presuming that they're able to counterattack further to the south and relieve the Cardassian fleets at risk of envelopment, it means a stabilized frontline. Again that's dependent on the Breen being able to feed them support and the Allies not digging in and risking being overextended. But they can still push hard agaisnt the Cardassians - even for whom if their morale isn't falling as badly now still have worn down fleets with heavy casualties and that have had massive command and control losses of experienced personnel. Presuming that the Cardassians aren't being thrown right back into the meatgrinder, a few weeks with stable front lines and a chance to resupply and reinforce should do amazing things for thier fighting ability. Not that they'll have enough ships out of the dockyards or freshly trained personnel to replace thier losses anywhere near enough.. But getting more of thier fleets reformed and refreshed should do a lot better for them holding their zone of space.

Always though that Breen knowing that earth attack was going to be a suicide mission, send a host of older ships, not equipped with energy dampening weapons and with only enough fuel to get there quickly to make a massive statement and sow chaos and terror across alliance at their entry into the war.

@sbkeel56392 жыл бұрын
Yeah even though the Breen had grand ambitions like ruling Earth and Romulas they never invaded before the Dominion War because in numbers and conventional weapons they are clearly greatly inferior to any of the other great Alpha Quadrant powers. They saw their best chance for glory coming to the aid of the Dominion in their darkest hour and became the new favorites of the female Founder. Once their energy dampening weapon was rendered useless though they weren't much help except for throwing in more numbers of weaker ships to buy the Dominion ships more time...

Just as dominion looked down and out, the Breen come riding to their rescue like a knight in shining armour with their massively powerful emp weapon and rapidly deployed large fleets to smash and roll back the alliance offensives in north and centre fronts to devastating effect. Curious if Klingons will manage to finish off southern encirclement before breen make their presence felt there.

Yikes! Things certainly turn on a dime. I think the Romulans still would have joined in even if they didn't underestimate the Dominion simply because with the Federation and Klingons out of the way there's nothing left to stop them from invading Romulus from all sides. They wouldn't have a chance and they knew it, unless they were ready to surrender and become a mere appendage of the Dominion like the Cardassians, but after seeing how badly the Cardassians have been treated there's no way they'd be ok with that. One thing I've wondered is since the Breen have energy dampening weapons that can cripple whole fleets, how was Starfleet able to wipe out the Breen fleet that attacked Earth?

I love DS9 for doing war stories but sometimes wish they'd scripted the war in more detail, and maybe they were leaning on too many McGuffins for the entire progress of it, in order to have our heroes be the ones everythign hinged on. That Breen weapon bothered me for being so darn all-or nothing when you'd expect to hear about other powers doing their best with whatever they could scrape up.
@lynngreen79782 жыл бұрын
Technically, it isn't even unique. The Tholians used weapons in the Tholian Web that were designed to keep a ship from running away. (Not that the Enterprise could at that point anyway). and the Ferengi had a similar weapon in The Last Outpost, which was never referenced again.
@OllamhDrab2 жыл бұрын
@@lynngreen7978 Well, the thing about it was the Thollians would have to fix a ship in place first and then take time setting up their web, which is very different from a one-shot gets-all sort of thing, (Which you'd expect would be countered by ...avoiding getting hit at least. ) If I recall the Last Outpost it was actually the T'kon planet that immobilized the Ferengi shhip and Enterprise and each thought the other had that power?
@lynngreen79782 жыл бұрын
@@OllamhDrab The Tholian weapons drained the engines - fixing the ship in place *for* the web. The Ferengi fired a wave from the aft end of their ship before the T'Kon acted.

Three episodes in such short order, what a treat! The Breen are puzzling to me. Oftentimes they are portrayed as "pirats" but they act highly organized, have strong numbers and rival in fighting power the strongest factions like the Klingons and Federation. So, are they "just" pirats or are they more Jem´Hadar like warriors that sacrifice their own lives without hesitation in order to teach the enemy a lesson and who are able to turn the tide on a war that seemed to be lost? Are they a one trick pony with their energy damping weapon? I don´t think so, they are great at ground invasions, great at stealth missions and they can grind it out, even if the odds are even (they never loose morals, never doubt their place in the war, never waver).

Sigma 925 love it. I always thought at this point we see the dominion have long range tackion detection devices on jem hadar fighters, and can effectively detect and track cloaked vessels at range, it makes sense to me a breen warship with jem hadar escorts on the various fronts would search and destroy romulan and Klingon ships , jemhadar detect breen fire damping weapon and and they finish her off . Say one brenn cruiser and four fighters ? In a squadron. ( its seems like a late war technology upgrade) ( tbe episode with martoks raiding squadron and kor ) that was new .

Tails: "We even lost Möbius 5-1 and 5-2... We just had a drink together with them last week." Heads: "Yet we're still out here. The Starcrystal is recalled back to Earth to repair damage from the pervious battle." Tails: "We couldn't do anything on the front. Earth is practically invulnerable. This sucks." Heads: "Mhm. We should be out there helping on the front, not sitting around at Earth- Wait a minute." Tails: "Unidentified Breen ships? What are the Breen-" Intercom: "Attention all stations, Action stations. Love the video I hope in the battle space video that you will tell us what you think makes the Breen energy dampening weapon work I thought is that the Breen either developed some type of energy leeching that will literally feed off the energy of a Target vessel or discovered something on one of their worlds and reverse engineered it into their energy dampening weapon either way look forward to what you have to say

Two questions: Given all that's happened in the Star Trek universe up to this point, why isn't Earth a fortress with the most OP space based defenses? Auto torpedo launchers with massive phase cannons, defensive shields and the like? What do they have a starship or 2 in system? Where is the logic? I thought in the show the Klingon ships were immune to the Breen weapons, so they were holding the line. Yes, it was a boon for the Dominion but not that big of one thanks to the Klingons.

This makes even less sense after the Xindi Spherical Planet Destroying Superweapon Which Is Legally Distinct From Any Other Franchises' Signature Spherical Planet Destroying Superweapon. But then, some continuities claim the Romulans attacked the system in that war. V'ger. the Traveler Probe. The Borg Twice. Not sure if the Organinans neutralizing all of Starfleet and the Imperial Navy then appearing in front of both ruling bodies should qualify as an attack or a Deus ex Machina.

Okay time to let my nerd Star Trek flag fly I doubt this comment will get a lot of attention but I've been sitting on this opinion for damn near 10 years so here goes. In my opinion the Breen or one of the most dangerous powers in the alpha and beta quadrant and here's why at the completion of the Dominion War Kardasa is utterly destroyed and occupied the Dominion are forced back to their own territory but the Breen on the other hand receive practically no real Punishment No territory lost so what did the Breen get out of this war you may ask well at the cost of several hundred ships and thousands of lives the Breen not only managed to attack Starfleet headquarters and if Star Trek Online is considered Canon stole sensitive information from Starfleet headquarters as well with their energy databity weapon captured at least several dozen variants of alpha quadrant power vessels... it is completely likely that the Breen after using their energy damping weapons stole various different types of federation Romulan and Klingon vessels for study and dissemination let that sink in for a moment..... they know every aspect of your technology have working examples of what you've created during wartime and you have no idea at all still about what they're capable of outside of nebulous information.

A Klingon ship was immune due to modifications to its power grid that could only be done to Klingon ships. There is a reason the counteroffensive is on the northern fronts where the Federation and Romulans are the dominant forces and against the southern gains where the Klingons are more numerous. Sadly, Klingon politics would have to be sorted out (a way only Klingon politics can be) before they could be an effective counter punch. It would take getting their hands on a working example of the dampener torpedo to develop actual defensive measures against it. Though, once one was implemented, the Breen were essentially reduced to warm bodies (or rather cold bodies) to throw at the Alliance in its final offensive.
