This makes me so sad. We visited Italy for the first time last May, spent three days in Rome and about 10 days in Sorrento. We couldn’t have loved Sorrento more. We explored Sorrento over several days (saw The Three Tenors, took a wonderful cooking class with Carmen, etc.), in addition to eating pizza (twice in one day) in Naples, taking a boat ride to Capri, hiring a driver (who became a friend) to take us to Amalfi, Positano and Ravello, taking the train to Pompeii, walking to the top of Mount Vesuvius and many other memorable experiences. We couldn’t have loved Sorrento more. The local people were friendlier and kinder than anywhere we’ve been (and we’re from the Deep South of the U.S.), the views were amazing, the history was plentiful, and the FOOD (including lemon-everything and the best olive oil imaginable, in addition to all the tomato-based dishes) was out of this world. We hope to go back again and again. It’s even on a short list of places we would move to. I have enjoyed watching many of your videos on KZbin and appreciate the work you put into them and the information you deliver. However, your description of Sorrento (based on your real but unfortunate experiences) doesn’t resemble our family’s experience at all. I hope that anyone who was turned off of visiting Sorrento based on this video will do their own due diligence and give it a try.

I think American hospitality standards are just really, really high. We went to Italy multiple times, simple, non-luxurious hotels or B&B but clean, and we were perfectly fine with it.

I love Sorrento. I've been twice and both times the hotel was great! It's a great place to base your adventures from Naples to Amalfi. The little railroad makes it very easy to visit the ancient Roman sites and Naples. You have your choice of ways to visit the Amalfi coast. And for all it's touristy qualities, Sorrento is still beautiful.

I've been to Sorrento no less than 12 times and I NEVER had a bad experience anywhere CLOSE to what is being portrayed here! There are plenty of wonderful restaurants, Azz! being my favorite, and the options for lodging are incredible! I've never spent more than 80€ euros per person for VERY nice places WITH breakfast! And it is the single best location to stay for a week or more and be able to experience everything the Bay of Naples has to offer!

Thanks Jocelyn and Mark for your honest appraisal. It is so needed these days as Instagram etc has made everywhere look paradisiacal when obviously there are cracks in every tourist destination that need to be taken into account when visiting. Bravo to you both ☺️✨🌷.

@woltersworld Been to Sorrento and Capri twice. I should have added two other tips. For 2 couples we used Sorrento First Choice driver for a private day long trip to Amalfi, Ravello and Positano and highly recommend them. Also, down close to the boats on Capri, there is a small grocery deli, and they made us fantastic sandwiches.

Love Sorrento! I had a great place to stay at Villagio Verde. I had a little bungalow with a kitchenette and a private patio. It wasn't fancy, but the staff were great, and the poolside bar was reasonably priced. I took the bus from Naples to Sorrento because it was cheap and I was too late for the last ferry. Loved the video!

We took a tour with Perillo. They did a great job and all those problems were taken care of for you. It is expensive but well worth it. My suggestion for going to Capri is to take Bonine or Dramamine, I got sick on the ferry. What a fabulous trip though. Everyone should go to these places.

Guys, go to Sant' Agnello instead. It is less touristy and is only a 15 minute walk/ 5 minute train/bus/car ride away from Sorrento. It also has the rail to Naples, Herculanium and Pompei. PS. Don't take the train from Naples to Sorrento when coming from the airport, instead there is a Curreri Viaggi bus directly from the airport. It is only 10 euros a person each way.

Thanks for the great tips. Your videos are wonderful. We are going there in 4 weeks (trip actually starts in 2 from Barcelona then Greece) and we can't wait. Lots of walking for these lazy Californians, but Greece would have prepped us for Amalfi. That's one thing most people don't plan for: the exercise of walking for hours, up and down stairs and cliffs. It's part of the experience. 😂

You have the best videos! I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years and find them very helpful! I was glad to stumble across this one as I will be traveling to Italy in October 2024. I’ve only been to Italy, Rome, once. We are planning on being in Italy for 12 days. We’ll definitely be visiting Rome for 3 or 4 days; however, we’re undecided on another location to spend the remainder of our trip. My spouse and I are outdoors and beach type of people. We prefer the hiking in the countryside opposed to a big city. We like museums but they aren’t at the top of our list on ways to spend the day. We are undecided on one of the following three locations: 1) Sicily, 2) Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast, 3) Florence/Naples. We are also big foodies, local not touristy. Any help on making this decision will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Mark's wife here, imo if you like hiking the Sorrento/Amalfi option is probably best of those...we hiked to Anacapri one year, it was great. But also, look into Cinque Terre and see if that may fit y'all well. We obviously have vids on all those locations. There's also good hiking/walks in Tuscany.

We drove from Rome to Sorrento and then went to Luca, Florence, Pisa and Naples. Naples was the only place I felt unsafe during our 10-day Italy trip. Can't wait to go back.
