I was in the 173d Airborne. At Dak To it was all country music, son. Kept me INsane. (edit: I'm bullshitting), I DID spend a month in Thailand in '97. The music was shit then too. "I'm Too Sexy" and "Barbie Girl" in every damn bar. Nobody heard "Vietnam music" in Vietnam, that was the music of the protest movement

And so was Robby Krieger and John Densmore, too. And after The Doors, none of them made any musical career to mention, notwithstanding how real good musicians and authors they are. That is quite a shame - I at least think so. And how interesting that the whole thing did not work without that musically nougth, not-so-good-voiced little sex (and otherwise) fiend Jim Morrison... even if that the three geniuses remained together for a while and yet. This pretty simple song is one of my favourite from The Doors, maybe the only of the bands of the 60's, the age of my parents' and favourites of my early youth that can touch me deep even today with lots of their songs.

When I first heard him on Light My Fire, I said to myself, "Hey, an intelligent person at the keyboards. A first!" Another first for the song (in radio rock) was giving the spotlight to the instrumentalists, each with an extended solo (in the mind's spotlight)… that's when rock really when instrumental...

When I first heard this album, I pestered my father to buy me a Farfisa organ for $800 and then worked off my debt to him by working in his office. I went out with friends that summer every weekend but during the week I helped my mother with house work and errands and then spent the rest of the waking day painstakingly learning every note of every song on the album. There were no computers so I taped each song on audiotape which I played on "slow" and then painfully learned each note. When school started up, two of my guitar playing friends were so impressed that we got a drummer and our 'wild child" Japanese-American girl singer to be our singer for our little garage band. That next summer we played college mixers and high school dances - for no pay of course - and the kids loved our songs.

All of that first album qualifies for Greatest Hits. I found this album while snooping in an older brother's record collection....in late 1974, when I was seven years old! Asked my mother if I could play it on that "hi-fi" turntable/radio/furniture thing (you know the thing as big as one of them old console television sets but 80% of the inside being empty space only good for dust and cobwebs) in the living room. Going on 35 years later it's still my all-time favorite album. One of those rare ones where there is no weak or filler cut, it's all fantastic! Imagine: a singer who shortly before couldn't sing and had composed lyrics from a rock concert going on inside his head, a guitarist who had only been playing electric about a year, an older guy who really should have been doing movies at this point but knew keyboards and 'discovered' the singer, and a drummer who's biggest success to that point was being lead snare in a local college marching band. Mind you, I'm not knocking any of this...just still amazed at how these four with these backgrounds got together and in less than a couple of years made two of the best albums of all time. And in a year when the Beatles released "Sergeant Pepper" and a year with the Monterey Pop Festival and the Summer of Love, both of which The Doors were largely left out of and triumphed overall.

One absolutely had to be there when this album first came out. I was a freshman in high school, in 1966 the Vietnam War was going full-blast, we didn't know at that time what a joke it was, etc. 1950's American President Dwight Eisenhower felt "obligated" to help French Prime Minister Charles De Gaulle with material aid to French war machine until they were defeated by the Viet Minh at Dien Bien Phu in 1954! The U.S. PT boats incident in the Gulf of Tonkin (1964) was a scam excuse for a very long and unnecessary war. Thanks LBJ and Tricky Dick!
@michaelesgro9506
@michaelesgro9506 5 жыл бұрын
And the theater (Pacific) commander of the Naval carrier fleet at the time of the Gulf of Tonkin incident(s) was none other than Rear Admiral George Stephen Morrison (Jim's dad and, at that time, the youngest man ever to be promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in the United States Navy!!!). Tell me that isn't fucked up. I believe he had to be somewhat, if not completely, aware of the false flag incidents that provided the inertia for large scale entry into the Vietnam conflict (even if his vessels were not effectively engaged in it all). Well, at least he was later integral in leading the refugee relief efforts after the fall of Saigon. Anyway, yes I agree, this album was thoroughly mind blowing to me (and remains so as does all of Morrison's/The Doors output). Just seeing Morrison's visage on the album cover moved me in a very particular way that I'll never forget...there was just something about this guy to my young self, his charisma transcended and shook my reality in just looking at the photographs inside the original album packaging.

I have this record. I used to blast this song to cover up the sounds of hip hop from my son's room. Oh well, we can't all appreciate good music. Cheers.

It's My Sniff i hope your son finds good music someday, i’m only 17 and i have a lot of friends who listen to the doors and other timeless, classic bands so i’m assuming it’s becoming more popular somehow, maybe just very slowly though.

I used to play riders on the storm for my daughter back in 98, she loved it then. I like lil peep and suicide boys , just not like the doors. Keep searching Sajan. Cheers.
