Welcome to my channel! This is a music reaction channel. For the longest time, I've loved creating content on the internet. I started off with a gaming channel right here on KZbin, which eventually turned into a Twitch gaming channel, but as time has gone on I've evolved into doing other things on KZbin. For years now I've wanted to create a music channel on KZbin, and recently just figured "why not?", so it’s time to give this a go! Give me any suggestion you have for music reactions, and I will do my best to get around to them. As music has fallen further out of my life, I figured this would be a great time to get reintroduced to music.
If you enjoy this video and my reactions make sure you subscribe to the channel, like the video and comment down below which video you would like to see me react to next.
This is a reaction video used to educate and give my feedback on the song and artists.

As soon as John Densmore shimmers on the cymbals, Robbie Krieger plays a few sinuous notes, Ray Manzarek fills in on the bottom, and Mr. Mojo Risin' starts singing, you know you are in a different world. Now Shawn, you must watch the movie "Apocalypse Now", about the Viet Nam War. "The End" is used to great effect in the beginning.

This song is used in 1979's "Apocalypse Now" to great effect, in fact it's as if the song was written specifically for the movie. If you think it's taking you on a journey purely as audio track you'll develop an entirely new appreciation for it in the context of Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece.

Before the movie there is the literary classic novel 'The Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad. (Maybe it would work to play this music while reading this book?)

For some further backstory, check out Sigmund Freud's 1929 book Civilization and Its Discontents. It's only like 120 pages or so. Morrison leaned on that for the "walk on down the hall" improve. If you're looking for psychedelic from The Doors, check out "I Can't See Your Face In My Mind" from their second album, Strange Days.

The first time Jim did the killer awoke part of the song was live onstage at the Whiskey a Go Go, much to the surprise of the rest of the band. What a show that must have been. Great classic tune. ✌️❤️🎶

The Oedipus story was badly abused by Freud, who imo had serious issues of his own. It's an ancient Greek myth about a baby born under the prophecy that he would cause the death of his father, a king, and was therefore left to die of exposure on a hillside (which was how they avoided the "crime" of infanticide because it was nature that did the killing, not the person who put the newborn baby there). The baby was adopted by kindhearted people who found him and NEVER KNEW his identity until the later tragic events. As an adult he was on a journey and was offended by another traveller, who he then killed in a fit of temper (which was his actual crime) not knowing that the man was HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER. Still not knowing this, he then met and married the man's widow who was HIS MOTHER. The moral of the story is that you cannot escape your destiny. Oedipus's mother hanged herself when she learned the truth and Oedipus poked his eyes out, spending the rest of his life as a blind wandering beggar. So, as you can see, this is NOT AT ALL about secret incestuous feelings or desire to murder the father/rival for mom's affections.

Back in 1992, I did a tour of the North east with an assembly program for schools called, "Animals Nobody Loves". I had a tarantula, rat, Corn snake, Alligator snapping turtle, giant millipede and the star of the show, a giant Indian fruit bat (Flying Fox). For 3 months, 5 days a week I would do 4-5 assemblies/day for a total of 180 in 3 months. All that constant travel gave me a soundtrack to tour to, and the Doors and a lot of cannabis between shows (while driving and sharing with the bat) were a big part of that experience. Oh to be 22 again.

Jim was writing a ton of poetry during this phase releasing a few books of poetry through the band's run. Lords and the New Creatures and Wilderness were two of them. The Doors also release a spoken word album from Jim after his demise. It is as funereal and haunting as Nirvana's unplugged set.

The killer theme ended their last album as well. Riders on the storm about a hitchhiking serial killer with lines like if you give this man a ride sweet family will die. I doubt it was thought out or planned but I find it interesting. In my fan view I like to think it’s the same man. I don’t need two psychopaths running around Jim Morrison’s brain.

I've read some analysis of the lyrics, although I don't remember all the specifics. There's some reference to the Oedipus complex, which is a Freudian psychological concept that states - the attachment of the child to the parent of the opposite sex, accompanied by envious and aggressive feelings toward the parent of the same sex. These are unconscious, repressed feelings. To discuss this kind of thing in a song is most definitely ground breaking. The 60's psychological explorations went far. Today's music can't even come close to this type of exploration.

The first number of times I heard this song was the radio edit and I really enjoyed it, but when I heard the album version I was shocked and perplexed, but I soon got over it and realized that this song was Jim's version of a Murder Song, which is a genre of Pop music that has a long history, with even big hits like "Delilah," by Tom Jones, falling into that category. The End is a really graphic Murder Song, and psychedelic AF, but it's become one of the most famous Murder Songs of them all. ❤✌

You got to the key meaning by the end. It’s not a death song. It’s about drawing your own line of self identity and freedom. It starts as a break up song to Mary werbelow (his longtime prior friend) wh/ then transcends and compels him to declare his own freedom in a time of cultural strife. Hence the comparison of the culture to Rome & the youth desperate for enlightment (summer rain). It points to amer still in a Rome paradigm driven by greed (gold mine). The Oedipal is the final break from this structure (father) and to find anew in nature (mother) and feel. The coda at the end completes the cycle, the vision quest and brings the writer to the new found truth and pathway to take on his manhood and freedom.
@kelvinkloud
@kelvinkloud 2 ай бұрын
The snake is the metaphor for wisdom, sin & power. It’s used to show how our culture was drawn back to Rome & built upon this need for power and conquest. 7 miles is 7K wh/ traces the origins of Rome to modern amer. Notice it moves across the shores to n amer, the kings hiway. To the gold mine (western shores Calif driven by greed). & at the end it returns to the sea (ancient lake) wh/ implies amer is close to running out its western culture cycle. Amer falling. Hence his need to seperate and search anew for self freedom and guidance.

Did you say that you've never heard this before?!? So you definitely missed out on seeing Jim perform this live then too... bummer. Well, better late than never! The whole album was groundbreaking, and you have to take it in & appreciate it within it's specific cultural context (1967 when folks were experimenting with LSD and open 'the doors of the mind'). The 'spoken word' section beginning with "the killer awoke at dawn..." is probably something with which younger generations might now be less familiar, but spoken word poetry and performance burst onto the (postmodern) scene in the late sixties, so it's apt that Jim spontaneously added this section during the live performance at the Whiskey a Go Go; it was based upon the Oedipus story, which we all learned in university literature, film studies and psych classes. I echo everyone's observations regarding to what effect this track was subsequently used in 'Apocalypse Now'. Have you checked out 'Riders on the Storm'? Side Note: Val Kilmer actually did an excellent job channelling Jim Morrison in the film "The Doors", it was kinda uncanny!

Jim had a complicated relationship with his parents, especially his father. And he was high making this song!!! And I saw him perform this at the Whiskey -A-Go-Go!!! It's about The End_Death!!! The End is a release from suffering of life which is what it really is. So, the mother is usually the friend of the child the father is the enemy of the child....it's a psychological thing. Love your reaction!!!

I wouldn't read too much into this. Morrison was establishing his rep as the Lizard King so he wrote shocking lyrics of love and death. He was a great performer but a mediocre poet IMO. Road of time. 7 miles long =7k yr wh/ takes you to ancient Egypt. The birth of the west. Morrison ingeniously uses this as a metaphor to trace the dna of the west from Cairo to Rome to n amer shores, out west to gold mine wh/ lured creation of Calif to modern USA and finally to the de (wh/ implies cycle is nearly over & amer and west could fall). The snake is the wisdom, knowledge, greed and power. It’s biblical in a sense. Book of Danial implies amer would be an extension of a still living Rome. Morrison takes that idea and traces it to modern amer culture still driven by conquest and a youth desperate for enlightment (summer rain).
