If you haven't done it, get this patented asap. Not joking, someone else could easily nick the idea and this would sell to anyone who's desperate to lose weight, wants to keep things secret, stop the babysitter from being nosy... Any number of reasons. Patent it and either make it yourself or sell the idea. I genuinely see this as one of those bits of tech which could take off! I'm still befuddled by the app coding though LOL.

I have loved this project for many reasons, the application of so much tech for such a simple job is just brilliant! I wish I wasn't such an old git and could grasp all this new stuff! keep it up julian, look forward to whatever comes next!

Julian, looking at the Doughnut Keeper 2000 it seems to me it needs could be improved with several small improvements in the hardware and software code if possible. The changes that if the can be incorporated in the software is first the servo return to the lock position either by timer or after the optical sensor goes to the open position, this way Nicki does not have to lock the cupboard manually. The second software change that I would think Nicki would like is a door open time limit alarm. By this I mean after ?? amount of time with the optical sensor open (door open) Nicki would get another e-mail letting her know the door is still open thus prohibiting you from leaving the door open for extended unauthorized periods of time and cupboard raiding. As far as the hardware the first would be to neatening and dressing the wiring either by trimming to proper length and heat shrinking them, wire loom, or use of some other cable management (sticky-backs, zip-ties, and or 3D print something such as cover(s) that would make everything look more finished especially on the cabinet wall one last thing instead of the emergency wires you have hang down consider either a magnet connect like wireless charging connector or a RCA mini. All in all a interesting project that has plenty of possibles.

gullreefclub thanI you so much for your comments, I agree there are many ways it can be improved, the timer on the servo was considered (also a max time limit for the the door to close) but we didn’t do it as sometimes Nikki wants the cupboard open for an hour while she makes the bread for the week or something. I didn’t show it but I’ve cable clipped all the external wires now so it looks great, the internal ones would have been done too, but Nikki’s started hoarding Xmas things in it now so I’m not allowed in to tie them up yet! I love that magnet idea that long wire would Benefit greatly from that. At the moment it’s sort of wedged under the other neater wires.

Oh I forgot to add i even toyed with the idea for an rfid watch strap for Nikki, to automatically open it when she’s near but in the end we kept it nice and simple. She absolutely loves it by the way. Thanks for your great comment :)

Very cool Julian. Are you going to cast the lock pieces out if bronze to make it strong enough to withstand the doughnut bandit's predations? :-)

I LOVE the way it amuses you so much, see you on the next visit Julian. Strange but I have been doing a lot of 3D printing myself recently.

With a brain like that, you should be solving the worlds problems not putting latches on doors ;-D I hope your striking tool comes out of the sand cleaner than mine did. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.
