The DOWN Command - Robert Cabral Dog Training #15

This video is about teaching your dog the DOWN command. This can be done by shaping the behavior and rewarding. In this video I use food as a lure and reward and work through the basic position of DOWN and how it should look.
Later I explain how the use of a toy can speed up the process. Also addressed is how to prevent a dog from being very pushy or mouthy for the treat!

My 3 month old (12 week) boston terrier has learned "sit", "stay', and "come". She doesnt RELEASE from "sit" or "stay" until I say "come", (Great pup!) but this command, even bringing treats all the way to the floor, she just doesnt understand or want to "lay down".

You have to ask yourself why from their point of view. It may not come naturally due to their specific anatomy. Maybe they're getting less O2 from the shortened nose to the trachea and their large upper body mass. Maybe a different style is in order for some pups.

My dobie is so elastic she bends forward on her toes to avoid lying down . We have sit, wait and stay to a T, indoors. OK on leash outdoors. Recall and Down elude us. Trying to bring more hand signals into play with sit and wait commands. We're having great fun but vaguely concerned that she's holding back for more play time. Thanks for the ideas

I have a now two year old mastiff and he has zero aggression and his pinch collar is just jewelry for him now. But I know I need to get him over his fear. And the pinch collar is great he turned my pup from pulling me every where. Am I right to think he sees the pinch collar as something that would make him uncomfortable and he knows when it will happen. I need a lot of getting my self into shape but it is my dog comes before my pain. I know I just have to get him to see that noise he hears are no big deal. I am working around my disability and I don't want to force him to just listen and look...am I thinking right. I'm thinking of getting an ecollar because I want to get him off the leash safely!!! For all!! I wish I was your neighbor but I borrow a lot of sugar. I don't want to push him and end up messing him up. Love to you and yours!

Understood the food lure and the lead part but he didn't really teach how or when he integrated to vocal command. My puppy drops down but I have to put my hand on the ground in front of him. I would like to teach him to do it without needing me to physically do anything.

Hi Robert, your videos are just great. Ive had a rescue dog for 3months now & he's 15months old. He knows sit & stay & now teaching him "down". He does the lazy sit which I'm wondering if he'll grow out of. He was abused a lot when he was younger & wasn't trained at all. Thanx & I love learning from you.

How do you teach a dog drop/down from a recall or fetch? My worst nightmare is being outside playing with her then all of a sudden a blazing car comes out of nowhere and she doesn't have time to turn around when called. Disaster. "What if" saftey scenarios like this keep me up at night. Ugh.

For now I just cant get him to go down from stand and I mean perfect down not the laying down side ways.. I just cant get my dog to go down from stand. He is a German Shepherd.4.5 years old. He will rather choose to sit first and then slide his front paws to go down. (My Fault I taught him this and now I don't exactly know how to undo this) Please help people like us who went through ""Random youtube" training" taught our dogs the wrong ways, buying into small successes, drew the line feeling content believing its perfect where as its not and not knowing the serious consequences involved and Im facing them. Have to disagree with training the dog to take the food easy. Every dog I had, I used the pull back and slowly give stating the command as I slowly move in the treat. Every time they try to grab it I pulled back. Took very little time to train them using this. Might have to use the other hand to make sure they don't lunge but this always worked within a day or two.

"He's looking for his reward." Why not just play with your dog as a reward? The more we use treats while training, the more they look to us for food, opening up a world of trouble for the dog in the future. It leads to more problem behaviors, like stealing human food.
