The main key point for the "downfall" is that in 2020 and 2021 the prices grew uncontrollably due to some temporary hype, now that the bubble popped the prices crashed as expected, but they will settle again over time

Great video! My earliest memory of Pokemon is base set first edition and lost interest of Pokemon when neogenesis came out. Fastforward to now as a Dad with three boys, we've opened modern packs and it seems impossible for the average kid to collect a master set. Kind of kills the fun of collecting when facing those type of odds.

Something that is nice about the “rare cards” (like V’s and Vmax/star) being cheep is that it makes playing the game super accessible. Building a good deck is only about $10-20

I used to have a American charzard holographic. Got it at an arcade using ski ball tickets in the village. I just used to play with it and never knew it was worth value and eventually lost it along with all my pokemon cards..

@@ItzJhon You do a great job In this video and had me reminiscing the past. I'd love it if you did a video on Garbage Pail Kids. In 1994, before I was in kindergarten my brother left a camper shell in our backyard. I used climb into it but had a hard time walking around because there were 1000s of Garbage Pail Kids card EVERYWHERE! I used to be creeper out by them and one day we took the camper to the dump and watched it get demolished with all those cards in it. Years later I find out they are worth yet again.... 😆😭🤮

I just got back into collecting Pokémon after a long hiatus. When I collected as a kid, it was during the black/white x/y era. The cards I always wanted to get were the ex cards from those sets. Fast forward to now a lot of those ex singles are fairly cheap on tcg player. My collection isn’t the most expensive, but I have cards that I personally like and always wanted as a kid. I like the alt arts nowadays, but the price makes me not want to collect them. Ive bought packs but haven’t pulled anything crazy. If I were to expand my collection I’d like to get some WOTC era cards. Gym hero’s and Gym challenge have always been some of my favorite sets from that era.

Being able to buy the cards you always wanted as a kid has to be one of the best feelings ever. The megas from that x and y era are heavily underrated. Gym heroes and Gym challenge are a great place to start. You'd be surprised how cheap you can pick up some of those holos for! Best of luck with the collection homie 😄

There are really only 6 rarities at least in sv. In lost origin, there are only 8 rarities (common, uncommon, rare, holo rare, ultra rare, secret rare, rainbow rare). You're splitting those rarities into smaller categories.

My sentiments exactly.. the streamers we see on KZbin give most people unrealistic goals for the hobby. Everyone wants to get multiple booster boxes, but it shuts up the little guy really quick unless he gets some lucky pulls. Little guy being someone who could only afford an ETB or less

That's great! I also work, but I haven't bought anything yet since January this year. I'm just bummed that pokemon cards are the norm of being seen as a way to make money, and not the appreciation of the art, or nostalgic memories etc. It's getting harder to participate in collecting anything pokemon related, not sure if it's the same for everyone else.ima be honest, this is a very expensive hobby, and can be very competitive with buying something without scalpers, or collectors that's already loaded with funds. I might get back into collecting soon, it can get overwhelming when you're not educated on past sets, and new ones. I still love opening packs, no matter if I get " hits or not". Don't get me wrong I get that times have changed, being blinded by nostalgia has its cons. I just wish those who are on a budget can enjoy the hobby again 🤧

I just pulled 2 Lugia V Alt Arts on my stream, and I constantly pull expensive cards, but then again I live in Japan and buy them at retail. English cards are going down, while Japanese cards are rising.

New collector here. My kids are super into it so I started collecting too a few months ago. After two booster boxes of Lost origin, I pulled just Vs and a few rainbows. I just want Alt arts so now I just buy alt art singles from TCGPlayer starting with Sun and moon and a few so far from SWSH. I’ve been on a spending spree with Tag Team alt arts and just got the slowpoke psyduck alt art this weekend in the mail, really funny card. I’m going to wait for the lost origin alt arts to settle down more then I’ll just buy the aerodactyl, rotom, and giratina, I pulled the perrserker from a lucky single blister. Bulk is so worthless now, ripping to find what you want in your collection is gambling. It’s been more cost effective for me to just buy the cards I want out right. The other thing I like to do is sealed collection. I have the Pokémon center ETB and booster boxes sealed for each SWSH set.

Yeah man I feel you. Nowadays, the only cards I want from these sets are alt arts and maybee some of the trainer gallery, or secret rares. But it feels like every set is the same, and you have to open wayy too many packs for a shot at something you'd even want. The rainbows and gold cards are honeslty lame, and are the same in every set. There was something about older generations which made the cards feel special, and had nicer artworks. At least the reverses back in the day were way better too

Smaller sets , I don’t get involved due to the size of completing a set . If it was 70-100 ish cards it’s reasonable . Make 2-3 cards in each set stupidly rare , a proper chase card . New sets are to big and come out too frequently

I don't agree to cut the rarity of these cards. You made it pretty clear that in the old days, 1/3 was the rate for the hit. The problem today isn't of how many rarities we got but how they didn't increase the pull rates. For today's large set there should be about double if not triple increased rates of pulling the cards. After all, this should be a family-friendly brand that kids and their parents can enjoy buying and collecting, and clearly, this shouldn't be a speculative sort of speak "investor fast gain opportunity. Even if you spend 600-700$ for a booster case you won't finish the set.

For me, the size of the set combined with the frequency of releases has gotten ridiculous, and is a huge factor in the issue as well. Three months between sets wouldn't be too bad if each set was more like the old days. I feel like somewhere between 100 and 120-ish cards per set is more of an ideal range...once you go over 150, it starts feeling bloated...and these 200+ sets we get nowadays are just frustration fodder. I do hope they remove the rainbow rares come SV sets...and it'd be nice if they dropped the golds too, but...that's probably a bit much to hope for. Removing non-holo rares and making the lowest 'hit' a holo would also be a huge help...we'll see, though.

i agree with cutting the number of rarities. i think they should get rid of revers holos and full arts. make every pack have a holo in lieu of reverse holos and replace full arts entirely with alt arts. i also think they should combine v, vmax, and vstar cards into the same rarity. oh and get rid of radiant as well. rainbows and gold cards are different enough that i think they deserve to stay. i mean i dont even consider anything full art or below a hit at this point. with the exception of alt arts, gold rares, and rainbow rares everything else is pretty boring. i legit get more excited when i pull a trainer gallery card than when i pull a full art. hopefully scarlet and violet era fixes this.

I can definitely see both sides. Personally, I feel like it would make things more dynamic. Not only would it be more similar to competitive pokemon within the video games, it would make a lot of competitively viable cards (that have the best values) valuable. In addition, budget players can trade a little bit of hp or attack to snag the card they need at a discounted price

Gamefreak is actually heading in the opposite direction with the video games these days due to all the problems with this approach. There are now a number of ways to just override a Pokemon's randomized stats and set them to the maximum possible value. Even with the drastically improved accessibility of the most recent games, the barrier to entry is still high enough that the online player base is shockingly small for a franchise of this size. It has lead to a proliferation of hacking that makes enforcement impossible. Trading is an integral part of the video games, and pretty much every competitive player has traded for a hacked Pokemon and used it without knowing.

Let's take the fact that you say "it shouldn't be about the money" and the first thing you're doing when pulling a shiny card is price checking it on tcgplayer. I personally LOVE the addition of radiants and trainer gallery. Now instead of like in chilling, you open up 36 packs and get a full art, rainbow, 4 Vs, and a VMAX (7-8 hits ish) you're pulling close to 20! That's better odds then the original 1 of 3. Trainer gallery still let's you hit big irregardless of the pack hit as it's in the reverse slot. And the cards are STUNNING! The odds are so low because their ARE so many big hits otherwise every pack you're pulling a rainbow. If the goal is to master set, yes the sets are huge! If the goal is to open a pack and there being a beautiful card (maybe 2!

honestly don't believe the pull rates lmao, this is all just pure luck of picking your box / case. i have 5 giratina alt arts and i got them all from 1 case, from 1 opening. in 216 packs i got 5 cards that are "1/200 packs" some people have opened 2 cases and not even got an alt art. literally just pure luck imo. i open packs to get as close as i can to completing a set, and its so fun to try n get those full sets
