The Downfall Of Team Edge

A video of me giving a brief history of Team Edge and attempting to explain my opinion on why I and millions of others have stopped them watching over the years.

i’m amazed you’re the only person who’s made a video about Team Edge and their downfall, and i mostly agree with everything you said. i did enjoy the “transition” era as i call it after the classic board games / garage era where they had moved into that first office building and did things like the four-square volleyball, the giant kerplunk, things like that. it’s when Matthias was permanently gone, Gunner had left, they moved to a new building, Bobby became a permanent member of the main team to basically fully replace Matthias in the trio, and new people were popping into every video that they really started to lose me. they really started feeling inauthentic the bigger and more elaborate the challenges and games became, and also as more and more people started working for the company and the OGs started dropping like flies. i think the biggest thing that led to their downfall was the insincerity becoming more prominent. it started to feel like the newer videos from like 2018/2019 onwards were a company trying to stay afloat and relevant, rather than a group of friends just having fun. it started to feel scripted and forced, rather than improvised and natural. they’re trying to bring in as many views as possible with these big elaborate sets and big-scale challenges and one-upping themselves, and it loses its authenticity because it’s become less about just having fun and entertaining their fans, and more about doing what’s attention-grabbing and what will bring in viewers and income. i get that it’s a business, but it’s totally possible to run a business and still stay true to oneself. let’s not even get into the side channels - Get Good Gaming, Rekt, Dope or Nope, Battle Universe - and how good they were up until they were either shut down for no good reason or just got boring. shutting most of those channels down still arguably hurt Team Edge, even though they went independent from the company. everyone who watched those channels watched Team Edge too, and it‘s been like watching a beautiful tall tower start crumbling before our eyes until now there’s almost nothing left 😞

But they still average hundreds of thousands of views and have steady subscriber increase ratios. For one of these 'OG' channels with so many subs thats been around for so long theyre still doing super well. I still love their content just like I have for the past 4 years. We don't look at things the way they do - it's a business. For us it's a youtube channel, but it's still a business. People (employees) come and go, Connor, Tanner, Matthias, Graham, Jordan and now Bobby but it's still a business and it's still working. While your take (as well as the video creators) is intriguing, I disagree. People don't like to see change but in reality sometimes it's necessary. Look at Dude Perfect. If they keep making trick shot videos only, their channel would have been dead years ago. They adapted and evolved with a business model and mindset, which kept them afloat. Same for TE. I agree with everything said regarding their logo. However keep in mind - no type of change is ever gonna satisfy 100% of an audience.

honestly, matthias’s overambitious dream of being some kind of KZbin entrepreneur really hurt all of the channels that he was connected to. he made too many channels and gave up on them almost instantly, the authenticity was gone when they started to treat the channel like a business model

I strongly disagree. I think that team edge isn’t made to be one category of a video or challenge. I actually think that every team edge video has its own fun and style that I can enjoy. I do miss Matt being in more videos and the board game challenges but I also understand that change is something you should accept and not run away from. However I am very proud of you for telling your honest opinion which is something that is hard to do. Especially on the internet. I just want to ask you if you don’t like team edge anymore why is your logo j-Fred. Why is your channel name a reference to one of their videos with large boats smashing into each other and not a board game episode. I think every video and every channel has ups and downs and that in basic form that is okay. I respect your opinion but I can’t say I agree with them.

I (personally) don’t feel like it’s that serious. I started watching in 2015 and I’ve stuck around because I found joy from their personalities. Yeah the videos are way different, but their videos are still enjoyable. They’ve grown a lot and most are married and their kids are growing. Theyre maturing and that’s okay. Again, I don’t think it’s that serious and the channel isn’t a lifelong thing. They offer 10-20 minute entertainment and that’s all I could ask for.

I don't think the "big challenges" are the problem, because before 2021, some of the most viewed videos are between that 2018-2020 span without matt. Its just that after the challenge league, everyone seems to have lost their personality and are completely carried by the set. An example of this is the mineshaft escape, its a super elaborate and big set but they are still goofy and fun to watch. Now it seems like they are forcing it in a way, may be because they are old, but theres just less magic in them.

Dude. The intro is probably what I miss the most. I understand Matt leaving, he had his own reasons and seems very happy with what he’s doing, and it’s not like his relationship with TE was ruined. I loved the bigger challenges and season one of the new edge games, but season two I felt like it fell apart.

I was a little hesitant to watch this video, but I’m so glad I did. You worded everything perfectly and I 100% agree. I am an original subscriber and have watched them since the beginning. I miss the simple videos of some guys having a good time in front of a camera. I catch myself constantly rewatching the old videos and skipping over the new ones. I don’t know if I’ll ever unsubscribe but it definitely has changed.

I miss a lot of the old things too, the intro, Matthias, etc. When they decided to try the challenge league, I was hesitant but I wanted to support them and I thought it was good to see Connor, Marvin and Kevin. Season 2 was where it felt more unsure, less coordinated. If their content's not for you anymore, that's okay, but as hard as it is to accept, seasons of life -- and content -- come and go. People change, they try new things. I try to support Team Edge through every season not for the content but for the people. They've brought me a lot of joy, so if the new style is what brings them joy, I want to support their happiness.

Don't blame them for the shorts. That is a KZbin thing. KZbin is telling channels they need to do more shorts and live streams because the algorithm has been changed. So they need to do them to get more views, according to KZbin. A lot of channels are not happy about it.

I honestly think their fall was the fact that the people who started watching them, back when it was just Matt, J-Fred, and Bryan in Matt's garage; well we had grown up so they lost the views, on top of their content being reskinned games they had done. Matt also expanded out way to much and tried new things, but bit off more than he could chew and had to release 95% of his workers. I think Matt leaving was the main reason I kinda stopped.

So I just recently rediscovered Team Edge... I was looking through some of their old content and one of the last videos I saw from them was 4 years ago... The reason I stopped watching them was it started to feel too repetitive... it's weird to think that it's been 4 years since I last saw their content.

I used to love team edge and a little before the pandemic I stopped watching cause it wasn't the same. I recently started watching all their videos again and had a huge surprise when the intro was gone and they were doing weird and not eye-catching challenges. I ended up watching all their old videos and am watching the new ones. They deff changed their style of videos after the new edge games but it doesn't feel the same. I used to talk with my best friend about them all the time about how fun they were and stuff, but it doesn't feel the same. I still enjoy them a lot, but it feels like a company doing this for work cuz they have to, not because they want to.

I couldn't agree more. Those videos were like drugs to me back in 2016-2018. I miss them dearly. I remember when Edge Games was so hyped up and everyone was going crazy over it, now everything is corporately created. And the intro too, I was always fascinated by the intro, especially with my ADHD. When it was just 3 dudes, everything was perfect. But then when all these new guys came in, I lost interest. After Matthias left, I feel like everything came crashing down.

I feel like Team Edge will have to quit KZbin forever from a lot of backlash from fans for lying that their never going back to og Team Edge and the entire Team Edge crew disbanding and only appearing in fewer of Matthias's OnlyOverkill and DOPE or NOPE in the form of mentions. After i watched the Get Shot if You Cast a Shadow in the Giant Wall! video, Wilderness Survival in a Tiny Car 1 to 4 and the four videos after that, they featured mainly only Bryan and J-Fred most of the classic Team Edge members were not featured in the videos anymore only few of them. These recent changes will and currently doom Team Edge forever to the point where they can't do KZbin anymore.

Welp, its been 5 years since i alst watched one of their videos and not even 5 minutes ago i learned all of this and just watched the video about them ending team edge. The side channels like dope or nope were great, i actually liked most of their games even the newer stuff they produced. I was sad to see MAtthias go and it did feel very different without him but i really liked Bobby too so it evened out for me. I satrted working so i now had less time to see their videos but coming bhack now its sad to see a part of my childhood completely crumbled.

It honestly sounds like someone upset they grew out of their Team Edge phase, but taking it out on them

I’ve been watching team edge ever since they had the card box phases and the whole reason why I think people enjoyed older vids more was because of the atmosphere and the chemistry, energy and enthusiasm they had. Just them sitting around a table cracking jokes with the natural light in the background. It just felt like a family having a good time. It felt natural. Versus them big sets and the jokes sometimes feel scripted.

I have watched Team Edge since early 2016. I have never stopped enjoying it, but I have never been a fan of the way they sometimes have done several videos doing the same thing over and over (like the flipping bottles/stuff videos, digging through 10+ walls with spoons etc...). I never really minded that Matt left, and have enjoyed having Kevin, Billy, Bobby, Marvin and Connor on the channel. I agree about the simplicity of the earlier videos, they were something special. I actually liked the new edge game-competitions, and probably won't unsubscribe. Shorts are a part of changes to social media at large, but I like you wish that they return to the original format of board games. I wish them all the best!

i noticed the same thing happening with the dangie bros also. ESPECIALLY after they mismanaged rob leaving like crazy. while they haven't had any big settings like team edge, it all felt super forced. i will say though, in my opinion, they're slowly getting back to where they were. they're humor is getting a lot more genuine again and i hope the same thing happens with the dangie bros

I have felt the exact same way for years. I have watched team edge for 5 years and everything you said was absolutely correct. I unsubscribed about one year ago and it pains me to see the Team Edge members not having sincere fun as they used to. The giant warehouse, the many employees they have, the huge structures they build is not necessary. I remember that the Covid videos had the same amount of views as the ones they were doing beforehand, so why not just go back to thier roots. They know that there's lots of people that want the OG content, but they refuse to do them. I hope this video reaches out to them so that we can spread a message. Like you said "It feels like a chore to watch them".

I’m sorry but I’m going to be a critic and say that I loved the change up to a point. I personally loved how they did bigger challenges with them still cracking jokes. I do understand how you liked the board games but as time goes on they got bigger and wanted to use the money on new challenges. I also didn’t really care for the intro. But there are something’s that I have to agree with like how the challenge league sucked, and I hate the super quick intro getting right into the challenge. Now that may seem hypocritical but I didn’t mind for the intro but I liked when they too there time introducing them selves, cracking some jokes, explaining the rules, or showing how they built whatever they might have built( Also I like when they actually build the things and not the crew doing it, but I do like when the crew builds the contraption and sets) well that’s all I have to say and I will keep on watching them no matter what

Totally agree! Maybe it's because I'm not an OG subscriber (started watching them 2018), but I liked the bigger challenges, as you say, up to a certain point. And I really, really enjoy their first couple years of their content as well. It's so enjoyable to watch the OG trio have fun and act like brothers. I always enjoyed seeing what their crew built because they always seemed so talented. I was having fun watching them when they were having fun. So, when it felt like they were being more competitive than having fun during the Team Edge Games Era, I didn't have as much fun. But now that they've reverted back to more of their 2018/2019 style videos, that's made me very happy and relieved.

What made them successful was how relatable they felt. From the corny intro it was apparent that this was a tight nit group of friends just having fun and being goofy together. That made it so appealing to millions. Now it has none of that appeal.

For people mentioning the intro, having an intro is bad for youtube analytics. If people click forward, that's a negative and youtube will recommend your video to others less. You have to get to the point asap. That's where we are now. I also HARD disagree with this video as a whole. Their old style of content IS boring comparatively to me. Their newer stuff WAS bigger and that's a good thing.

Team edge is more about the guys doing what they enjoy more than getting views. I also prefer old team edge with matthias and them just playing board games but there are things that had to be changed like matthias having to work on so many other channels that team edge was to much for him and them not being able to fit all the team edge members into a small board game video. As team edge began to grow and gain more traction, they had the money and startup to do bigger things they enjoyed more. I miss old team edge too and I would love for them to come back but people grow up and they grow things up with them. I appreciate the video and you made some really good points. I think theyre just having fun and people will follow them along their journey and then leave when its not enjoyable anymore but the guys will have fun no matter who watches.

If you want to watch the board games, join the membership for og account, they shortened the intro for the algorithm and the shorts is a new feature to compete with tiktok. I'm slowly fashioning in team edge style content into my main channel.

I pretty much stop watching after 3 or 4 month after matt left. I'd occasionally went back to see what they were up to but never stayed for long. I think early 2019 is when i stopped watching completely. It wasn't until today i remembered them this video summed up alot of my disappointment with current team edge.

You know, you nailed everything. I myself, was one of the original subs, when i was 6, i used to watch them just the 3 trios. Now im 13 almost 14 years old, and i eventually unsubscribed around like, 4 years ago, when i was 9 because of all the changes... but there is this one change that i absolutely loved.. which is bobby.. bobby used to make me so laugh, he was one of my fav characters, other than the trio. But when i heard the news that matthias AND bobby which were one of my fav characters leave. I was devastated.. i hated every thought about it. And you showing those old videos while your talking, or the old intro, gave me nostalgia.. thank you for reminding me of the good ol' days..

Maybe it's just me, but it sounds you got emotional with this. I was there when Team Edge started on Matthias' channel, and as much as they were fun to watch this was inevitable. They are just a KZbin group. I know the turn-around with their content was disappointing, but the emotions are a bit overkill.

Well said. It’s supposed to be an evolution, but I’ll never see “Matthias and Team Edge” and “Hi5 Studios” as the same thing. I really hate to see KZbin channels become professional. I subscribed to both Matthias and Team Edge back in late 2015, and about 2018 or so is when I unsubscribed. Matthias had soul to it, but DOPE OR NOPE is just so hollow. Like you said, they forgot what made them special. That’s why creators like Markiplier are still successful: they know why people come back for more.

I have to completely disagree with this video. Ive been a fan of Team Edge since the beginning. And I can tell you that Team Edge was only getting better and better throughout the years. I mean just look at how they started. Just 3 people playing simple board games. And as years go by they begin to expand with new challenges, new members, and larger locations like their warehouses. And their humor has not changed at all with these new challenges. This channel has been around for years, and their is no possible way, that Team Edge would be able to survive by just doing board games. And I think were also forgetting about the jobs made from this channel. From the camera people, editors, and the build team. They really made an amazing business. I noticed that you pointed out how views where decreasing over the years. But that is completely normal for a KZbin channel thats been on KZbin for years, ESPECIALLY a challenge channel, I mean how many new challenges can you have. And team edge was still racking up a million of views every video. Which is insane. I wanna finish this off by saying that I can see what this video is trying to say, but it really doesn't make any sense. Would you, if you had the money and the fame, just play board games in a cramped room for years, I mean like I definelty wouldn't. (edited) I also want to point out that the change up to no intro is a smart move. Intros are not really popular anymore among KZbinrs, like idk any KZbinrs who use an intro anymore even old KZbin channels that used to have an intro, stoped using it. Its just outdated. And with the introduction of Tik Tok, KZbin Shorts, and Reels. Intros just dont seem needed. And I think that last point I have to make is the age of the members, I mean there getting older now. And all these challenges are pretty tiring to set up and prepare. And that why I think Team Edge ended. But yk, I think we shouldn't cry cause its over, we should smile cause it happened. For you it was the intro, for me it was people leaving (Gunner) and new people being introduced (Pat). It became something different and I just eventually lost interest. After being a fan for multiple years I do feel like Mamacita unsubscribing was a little drastic and disrespectful. You could've simply blocked their videos or not watched them instead of abandoning them. Matthias was trying really hard to keep the fans and I bet losing subs is really scary for a man trying to support multiple families with You Tube as a career.

Ok, so I see where your coming from in this video, I loved the old stuff too, but the unfortunate reality is, the reason all these changes happened was because the KZbin algorithm was, and still is, changing. If they kept the old format of tabletop board games, the channel would die quickly, now KZbin is about catching the viewers attention within the first seconds. I do hate that that's how KZbin works now, but Team Edge have to do things to get views to continue doing KZbin. The MrBeastification of KZbin is annoying, but people have to do it to stay relevant. That's why the intro had to go, and a fast pace explanation was put in, to catch the viewers attention and keep them engaged. Also, them doing shorts is another part of modern KZbin, it helps get views and attention to the channel.

I always liked the edge games, it gave them a goal, a reason to win, but when they stopped with the edge games, they felt armless and directionless, i honestly liked the edge ganes coming back, but then they went back to basics again, thats their problem, they say they will do something but they never committed, they always chicken out if the "fans" didn't like it, i have been a fan sense 2016, when they finally ended, i didnt feel sad, i honestly felt nothing, i felt more sad when Battle universe ended, when team edge gaming ended i was a bit sad, get good gaming i was happy to see go, and dope or nope just stopped uploading without even a goodbye,now all we have left is overkill and his stupid highlighter aesthetic

As to say, most channels do come and go. They last for such a long time that its sad to see them go, although I didnt notice much of the change, it was mostly because I was a kid. Now, thinking back, they really did change. But not everything lasts forever, Im hoping J-Fred, Bobby, Bryan, and Matthias all find good lives in things. Matthias even stated he'll be from now on actually just focusing on one and even then, will focus on just what he wants of the channel. He mainly did all of this just because of him being a producer and had too much he could handle. Thankfully the studios never went into financial trouble as he said, but still. Either or though, like us as new adults, things must end sooner or later. Soon a new Team Edge sorts will rise for the new era, but for this one it has sadly ended

I don’t think the Edge Games were a bad idea, they just made it so complicated and it lacked structure. I would’ve love to see the teams competing in simple games. The simpler videos are my favorite, like the giant volleyball challenge, just four dudes having fun playing volleyball. They even made the team names complicated, I wouldn’t have minded if the teams were just called, red team, blue team, etc. I started watching them during quarantine (I don’t know how that channel was recommended to me, I mean, I’m a thirty year old woman and KZbin recommended the giant kerplunk challenge? Weird) so watching them brought a little laughter and joy to my days, that’s why Team Edge holds a special place in my heart and I’ll continue watching (even if if feels like a chore). And I agree, the “downfall” started with the bigger videos, we don’t need/want that, I hope they back to simple.

I loved old school team edge. Some of my favorite videos were filmed in Matt’s garage or his backyard and I loved Hi5. When they got their new office and so much fun, genuine content was being produced, I loved it. I like some of the big challenges, but I really did enjoy the board games and the real comedy. I miss that feeling and I also unsubscribed from them a while back. When I saw they said classic team edge is coming back, I was so excited. But I was ultimately disappointed. I’m not to big in the shorts and I also am not even familiar when they upload? I still get confused when are they uploading. I just miss the old classic team edge like the one I knew before.

When a channel changes the core type of content their viewers expect; less people will watch. It is just how it works. That sentiment will most likely apply to this video as well. I understand that people’s taste changes over time, but in this case (at least based off of this comment section) many other people as well as myself stopped watching because TEAM EDGE changed, not our taste in content.

First of all, i would like to say i respect your decision, Team Edge has been a staple of entertainment that i could find for cheapsies. Every morning its always Team Edge whenever i have breakfast or just chillin by the couch, getting some laughs. But i have to point out i always watch their old vids cause the new ones even the most recent uploads just feel like headache for me in the first seconds. Back then it was just unscripted comedy between the Fred Brothers and a Guatemalan, some occasions with big KZbinrs like Markipoo or Megan Balloon. Then as time goes on more people comes in Bobbylicious, DJ Freezy, Jordan, Marvin, etc... and for me seeing Bobby attitudes start shifting from shy and non talkative to downright savage was the shocking point to me. Sure the channel still stays as enjoyable to my eyes but once Edge Games 2 comes in, boy i was solely disappointed in a couple vids. I get Matt's situation he has a whole channel network to take care. But it was him, J Fred and Bryan goofing around in this made up but felt real game. Now its all felt scripted and its not even a joke. Keep it short i respect your decision to unsubscribe but i cant do the same as you since i still have hope that they can make a change.

ok so, i remember team edge's boardgames style videos, and i loved them, now i will admit, when they started doing stuff in the new building i tried to adapt. i mean i did enjoy bryan, joey and bobby, but well i missed gunner, i missed matthias, also the more bigger videos, i wont lie, i wasnt massively interested. then we they did the edgegames challenge league, i left for a good six months, i couldnt get into them at all. now when they came back claiming they were doing classic stuff, i was excited but it felt like, well what i loved was gone, now jordan and bobby have left, and i have kinda lost complete interest, which is a shame. i really loved the old team edge, i do understand maybe they wanted to make it better but i dont know

I was young when I started watching team edge, so I didn’t really notice the change. I mean, I did but I didn’t really care. I thought it was just getting cooler, so I kept watching. The edge games format was the point when I had the realisation: “they aren’t having fun”. They were laughing sure, but it was clear they didn’t enjoy it and that’s when I stopped enjoying it

I agree with everything you said. I tried to stick with them but I couldn't. They changed their style and I think their audience changed with them. I believe they started catering to a younger audience because they were making more money and getting more views from their wilder videos. But they lost most of their core audience at that time.

Sadly this rise and fall of team edge mirrors the rise and fall of Hi5. When team edge was at it's peak. There were so many Hi5 channels. Now they're down to 2. Even their third and 4th money makers. Gg and BU. Both went through a decline. Bu especially when it transformed from guys having fun in an office to a dedicated space it wasn't that bad. It was actually nice and I enjoyed it. But once CJ, woods, and pat started to come in and take over. It lost it's touch. It soon turned into something that was obviously trying to jump onto trends to stay popular. It lost it's ooh here's a fun idea for a game let's try it out. It's all obvious that Hi5 was running off the money makers and has since started to decline. Even team edge is less elaborate and giant since their decrease. They don't have the budget to keep it up.

I’ve enjoyed most of their content, but the challenge league was an embarrassment. I was actually disappointed in them for that. Watching the trailer made me cringe. Them talking about these big changes got me all excited, and I was really let down when that was the best they could come up with.

so i agree with you on the first part but when they switched to bigger and bigger challenges i didn't really mind that. actually it was more entertaining for me but when they brung out the edge games with the new set and all the teams that's when it started for me. it felt like they were acting being fake and just trying to be high energy all the time and the new style of editing was kind of the same all vibrant colors ,neon text and the new intro. it was super high paced and it just didn't feel like team edge. i have re watched team edges old video hundreds of times but I've only watched the new ones 1 or 2 times. even when they stopped with the edge games and they were "going back to their old challenges" it didn't seem like that. it was just the same video but now with no teams or points. even with all of that though I will not stop watching them

I’m probably the oldest commentor of the bunch at 68. I’ve watched since September 26, 2015; the first video. I loved them! Still do, just not the videos so much. I don’t know what the answer is to this problem. I’ve heard the same things from many of the channels I watch; Dannie Bros., JStu and even How Ridiculous. They all say they need to change because everyone is changing. My mom used to have a saying when I said “everyone’s doing it!” She’d ask me if everyone jumped off a bridge, would I jump too? That’s what seems to have happened; they all jumped! And now they’re all drowning, looking for a way back to shore. None of them seem to realize we, the fans who watch, are throwing them a lifeline! Come back to your roots, we cry! They cry back, we can’t! We’re supposed to change! And they’re drowning. I’m not sure it would even help to spell out these things to them. We’ve told them, but like the old Mad Gab vid, Joey has his fingers in his ears and Bryan’s trying to pull them out saying, “I wanna hear, but you got your fingers in your ears!”

I actually joined in very late at around 2019 and was watching around the time they filmed the build your boat battle or slightly earlier. I gotta say that they need to cut down on the builds and go back to simpler games or create new ones that allow more freedom of expression like the quiet place challenge or the prison bus escape challenge. I don’t think they should bring back table top games or at the minimum keep it to an occasional thing as board games can be very repetitive and I know because me and my friends actually planned something similar to TE years ago but in our script board games were to be scrapped once we got our footing as I feel board games are more of a starter to KZbin challenge videos.

Sure, it’s a downfall for you, but what about other people? Personally, I constitute a downfall as “in which the appeal of a certain subject is diminished from most sides.” What I think your looking for is the “downside.” For me, downside means “a diminished aspect of one subject.” Oh well, that’s just my opinion. I tuned back in recently and watched some of the stuff I missed and for me personally I didn’t care about the whole league aspect. The thing that got me hooked on team edge was that they were able to make something simple like kerplunk, or something similar into something creative, along with them combining things like trampoline volleyball. Most if not all big channels have a shelf life and unless you can make a drastic change that works as well as what you did before and it doesn’t feel the same (for example smosh and the Sidemen) then it’s not gonna be as exciting overtime
