Zweihanders were absolutely practical and used widely in in 1500s. They were used to break up pike formations which were popular at the time. There are literally manuscripts demonstrating their use as well as documents detailing that soldiers who had demonstrated mastery of the zweihander were paid double. Scholagladiatoria has some videos on how they were used.

My pet theory for why Guts can even swing the Dragonslayer is that he’s accidentally using magic. Shierke and Flora explain some of Guts and Casca’s experiences as being caused by their permanent relocation to the interstice by their brands. This means they are always partially in the spirit world where magic is most effective. The idea of an object in the interstice manifests differently than the physical object, as explained by Flora’s tree house, so belief, reverence, and sheer will can manifest physically in that space. I think Guts is intuitively magical and lifted the Dragonslayer partly because he believed he could. He’s insanely strong, yes, but the rest of the weight is carried by his belief and how that alters the blade in the interstice.

Guts ears are somewhat pointy, i always asumed that there was something fishy about his lineage, but nothing really did come out of it. Fun facts: The pic associated with Grütte Pier’s sword is actually a bearing sword, not a zweihander. The bearing sword is for ceremony, not for combat. The zweihander WAS practical in combat though, especially for dealing with spears and pikes. The German mercenaries most known for their use were the Landsknechts, who, among the zweihander, also used muskets and pikes in some of the first pike-and-shot tactics in military history. ... speaking of German Mercs, I must mention Götz of the Iron Hand, who was an imposing figure, mercenary, often picked fights with the Holy Roman Empire, and got his title from the fact that he lost his hand to a cannon and had a blacksmith Forge him a new one that was very advanced for the time and allowed him to wield his sword. Let me say that again. His name was *Gotz.* and he had a metal hand. People actually asked Miura If he was inspiration for Guts, but he said that he wasn’t aware of him at the time of creating Berserk. To tell you the truth, I feel like he was but Miura has totally forgotten over the many, many, many, *many* years of making Berserk.

One of the main reasons I fell in love with Berserks and have a hard time to find almost any other manga/anime coming close to it (and Ive looked hard) was the reason that Miura made the Main Char weilding a Big Sword feel like a big sword. Pretty much most other media ive seen its little kids swinging it like its made of paper. I understand that sometimes its intentionally cheesy, but still, its a total deal braker to me. Guts made the Drangonslayer feel dangerous and impactful. That thing wasnt just a regular weapon, almost nobody else could even pick it up, and even the apostles were respecting it, like Zodd.

That and combined with how Guts swings it around, it feels raw, rough, and nasty whenever he hits something with it. All in all, the Dragon Slayer is possibly the best-oversized sword in anime and manga history.

In my country of Portugal our very first king was named D. Afonso Henriques and he was a giant standing at over 1.90m tall back in 1200. The sword he used is still preserved in a museum and it's over 1.70m long and woeghs just about 12 kilos. He didn't slay demons tho, so dragonslayer is cooler

Dragonslayer is one of the few giant swords that actually has a purpose for its size and it doesn't take a slim teenager to raise it. Most of them are just for show and that was originally its purpose but at least Miura thought to give it some meaning and logic, not only that but its also just a HUGE man-made sword which fits so well with the humans vs monsters themes in berserk.

Personally I like the idea that Guts has a hidden power modifier that makes wielding the Dragonslayer easier. After he got the brand he exists in the interstice as stated by SK, and I think Shierke speculates at one point that he seems like he’s able to influence the world around him by sheer willpower. Guys himself is already ridiculously strong already so this makes sense to me and I wouldn’t be surprised to see this come up in the story later on. That being said this is still totally just my headcannon

Guts is 6'8" and weighs about 250 lbs. It's estimated the Dragonslayer sword weighs about 400 lbs based off its height and thickness.

Guts and the Dragonslayer have been a huge inspiration in my own work. I've been working on the tale of a Titan that wields similarly impossible blades, and wears armor that would crush normal people. But i've taken a lot of the lessons from berserk to heart. The main point of the story is about humanity, and what makes humans tick. Varashi, the main character, is intelegent, and uses her wit more than her blade. However, when she does swing her blade, or move, I do my best to give it the same weight, and gravitas that Berserk does. Her fighting style with the blade is based around it's weight, it's width, and it's power. She often uses it as a shield, or as cover. She does not run around the battle field but waits for her enemies to come to her. She wears heavy armor so she can tank the hits and counter instead of chasing down her opponent. It's a lot of fun to write. I love giving a more practical aspect to the fantastical

The Thing is...Guts has only one Hand. However great the Mechanical Hand is, it will never be as good as a real Flesh and Blood Hand. I don't want to imagen the chafing it leaves on the stump. I think it is quite ridicules that Guts can wield such a extremly heavy Blade with only one real Hand. It should throw him of Balance at Least. But he still wields it with ease.

Take a good look at his stances, feet positioning, body weight shift and handgrips when he swing it. He tilts his body back the opposite way of the swing to counter balance the blade weight, he uses centrifugal force to maximize the swings, he has wide, solid stances with his feets firmly in the ground, and he always has his valid hand high on the grip with his prosthetic at the end of the handle, while he Holds the blade with his valid hand, he pushes down with his prosthetic to keep the balance and the blade level. When you really really take a good look at each scenes where he fight and only focus on his, body axis, hands and feet position, it all makes sense and is logical, evne if ridiculous, Miura manages to make it believable enough that you Suspend any disbelief you might have.

zweihander sword weren't longswords, they were greatswords. Apart from the size the distinguishing feature was a secondary guard on the blade so the sword could be gripped further down for more leverage though there were exceptions such as the Scottish greatsword which were more or less giant longswords with longer handles. I personally don't believe Pier would have chosen to use that sword in battle. I don't think any person would be strong enough for it to be as effective as a lighter sword. I susspect it was either decorative or used for strength training though it would certainly be better than nothing if no other weapons were at hand. I'm a competitive strength athlete and I've also trained with swords for 10 years so I've got a pretty good idea of what the human body is capable of when it comes to this topic. Taking off multiple heads with a single is certainly possible though if they didn't have plate or chain armour. Ronnie wouldn't be anywhere close to being able to use the Dragonslayer, there's a big difference between squatting or deadlift strength and having that much weight on the end of a long lever. In the average commercial gym you'd be lucky to find 1 guy who could pick up an empty 20kg barbell at the end like a sword let alone wield it as a weapon. Ronnie might have been able to get double that off the floor in his prime but that's still a fraction of Dragonslayers weight. Guts can swing it with 1 arm at about half the speed of sound.

They have long handles so and are surprisingly nimble weapons when used correctly. The wight isnt' so much an issue when you have a long handle to counter balance. You can also throw into a swing, like when you cut wood with an axe and move your hand as you swing to the correct pivot point. To give you an idea of weight two handed greatswords weighed anythign from 2.4lb or 1.08 kg to 7 lbs which is a measly 3 kg. A siz foot chap weighing 100kg to 120kg could happily swing and pivot a 3kg balanced wieght pretty easily. And pretty QUICK too. A common misconception about two handed swords is that they are slow. On the contrary they are way faster than you would expect.

I mean he was able to deflect a Throw from an ogre ( a fucking House support beam), that had the force of a frealing cannon ball with the Sword ( by angling it yeah but still) and he parried/guarded against Grunbeld Warhammer with it. Nothing short of Divine intervention can make a dent in this monster of a blade.

also, the human body can, in theory, lift up to literal tons if they are pulling in one direction (I think 25 or maybe I'm thinking of too much). what I think is that the berserker armor damaged the nervous system of guts (as shown in the manga) but it now allows him to pull all of his muscles in one direction while using the armor to allow the speed and godlike strength that we see him against the giant grunbeld. maybe with all of the uses of that armor, guts can just use more of his muscles in one direction due to his nervous system becoming numbed and allowing this to happen

That's not how muscles work, they can only pull in a set direction relative to your body. What can happen however, is that the berserker armor numbed his pain receptors/muscle limiters, allowing him to recruit every muscle fiber. Normally, this would cause nerve damage and tears in muscle/tendon, which is why its only able to happen in life or death situations with extreme amounts of adrenaline

I think it'd be AMAZING if Hanarr The Dwarf put a special enchantment on The Dragonslayer that allowed Guts to wield it as if it were as light and nimble as a saber without ACTUALLY sacrificing it's incredible weight and the damage this allows it to inflict. It's not that Guts becomes stronger or the blade gets lighter it's more like a mystic Charm that aids Guts in controlling the blade once he picks it up gets it moving.

Also you still have to consider that Guts is literally swinging the dam sword with only one arm. Remember the other hand is a metal construct designed to have multiple “Side arm” style weapons, he has a wrist or forearm mounted crossbow, and a literal cannon tucked away behind his hand. Also the metal hand is composed of multiple magnets just so it can help grab Dragon Slayer.

The difference is that the Zweihander actually was practical when used, and was put in use in all out battle, by the Doppelsoldners in the German Landsknecht regiments, they were designed to break large tightly packed pike formation, the zweihander user cut and breaks through this pike formation and starts to slaughter everyone, the Zweihander is the greatest sword in existance that was actually effective in Battle.

I feel like The Berserker Armor also helps him wield the Dragonslayer because a sword that big would tear apart the connective tissue of your body and joints, etc. It doesn't matter how strong Guts is, the Dragonslayer will break his bones and joints and tear his muscles when he swings it. The Berserker Armor could counteract this. At least that's my headcanon.

He doesn't need one. His sword is possessed of the death grudge of thousands of souls, human and apostle. It is essentially a cursed blade that cannot help but destroy. And it gets stronger with each life he takes. Thing is literally damned and the only person who could use it is Guts. Maybe the dwarves could give him some pointers on improving it, but Guts and the dragonslayer pretty much have grown stronger together. I can't imagine him wanting another sword and I can't imagine it letting him get away. Yes, I believe the sword has some kind of will of its own. Not because it has done anything but because of what the basis of its power is. I can't imagine a weapon that has killed so many mundane and supernatural beings and absorbed their lingering death wails would not develop a sense of self. It is just happy with its user so it doesn't act up.

Miura stated that the events of Volume 34 take place 3/4 years after the eclipse so Guts cant be 22 at most, a lot of time happened between the story

He was 15 when he met the Band of the Hawk, then there was a 3 year time skip, the war ended a couple months later, meaning he was 18 when he left. He came back to help rescue Griffin a year later, just before the eclipse, so he was 19. He then spent 2 years hunting Apostles before returning to discover Casca lost when he’d be 21. One winter has passed since then, so maybe a year, making him 22 as of the most recent chapters.

The journey to the fairy island with casca was a year at most because, as stated, there only been one depiction of winter, and that’s when it was just Guts and Casca. He met up with Isidro, Farnese, and Serpico towards the tail end of it, then met Shirke not long after. Neither Isidro or Shirke have visibly been depicted aging in that time, so I’d say less than.

You've got the monsters (Ganishka's Shiva form is one of, if not the coolest thing I've ever seen); the really strong, fleshed-out and interesting characters, and you've got the good writing. Fortunately I can look past the blatant sexism - I know my worth, and I don't need a book series made by some old man to affirm me. Sweihander were not used in duel, they were used in pyke square formations, to catch or break polearm shafts and allow your allies' polearms (pykes, halberds, poleaxes,...) to take advantage of the opening in the enemy fotmation.
