Can’t wait to try this, as I’m always looking for ideas to refine my skills that don’t involve a full blown portrait all the time. Reminds me of the exercises in “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” that were excellent.

This was interesting, David. I'm going to try that. The drawing method I use most often is the Center Point method. I suppose all these drawing methods are related in some way. An exercise I like to do that I learned from Lajos Markos is an exercise where you draw or paint a random shape on the left side of a piece of paper, and then try to copy the shape exactly going across toward the right side of the paper until you get it perfect. Five or ten perfect copies of that shape or more. Then start a new shape below it, and try to copy it exactly going across the paper, maybe five or ten times or more until you get it perfect. This kind of " doodling " is a great exercise for the right hemisphere of the brain. Really gets you thinking and seeing forms in terms of MASS. Thanks for the video, David.

thank you so much! it's much simpler than drawing the whole thing only to feel frustrated later, so much easier to practice hand-eye coordination on low stakes scribbles!

Thanks, David. I used to run Bargue drawing workshops in Toronto. At the time, l was working for a commercial printer and had large prints made up of the images in the book ( l wrote the publisher to get permission to do so. They kindly permitted me)

David - great channel content. I can't often join live, but often check back to see what you posted later. On the 'sight size' or comparative method - do you recommend using the iPad regularly as you demonstrate or if the method some offer of larger paper and posting them away is best or is the iPad option as a convience?
@Odysseus_Outis18 күн бұрын
In Bargue's sight-size drawing, it seems easy to get the right angles,,, as it has a 1:1 frame size (or at least a ratio). But in actual proportional drawing,, the paper I may get often has different dimensions of W/H (or a ratio), which makes it harder to get even the right enveloping in the 1st. place. Would there be an efficient tip(s) to overcome this, while practicing it?.
@rolisonpaint315 күн бұрын
WELL, i'm not David, but I would cut the paper so it is in proportion or block off the extra part of the paper in some way-fold,cover it etc.
@Odysseus_Outis15 күн бұрын
@@rolisonpaint3 Thanks for sharing the tips, In fact, I was doing the same/similar things to get the matching ratio of the frame, too. But others were doing just fine without doing so,, thus I wondered if there were better ways to get things right ...🙄😅

I’ve lost so much confidence trying to copy the best. I was better and able to actually finish paintings when I just tried to solve problems in front of me without trying to do things others have done.
@an879016 күн бұрын
I've always struggled with practice, because when I replicate just for the sake of it, don't really love what I am doing. Trying to incoorporate practice into my own projects work a lot better. And I don't think we should strive to copy the masters one to one, I think its rather about finding things they do that resonates with our hearts, so that we forget that we are trying to copy some aspect of their work. A lot of people learn to draw and paint very well, but are never 'alone' with their work, enough to develop a style based on what they really love. I dont think its possible to create anything unique without some degree of isolation and struggling with solving your own problems in your art. Just a few thoughts.
