When this tune was first played in Philadelphia back in 1959, a local DJ on WDAS, Georgie Woods played it about 10 times in a row. He was was stunned by the Drifters performance. I agreed . The tympani drums, the strings, the haunting plaintive chanting of Ben E King was something I had never heard before in my 15 years. I feel the same today approaching my 80th birthday.

one of the perks of being " a certain age" was seeing the drifters 56 years ago today along with ben e king, chuck jackson, the shirelles, dionne warwick, and patti la belle and the bluebelles along with other acts at a murray the k xmas show sat the brooklyn fox theater in 1964... all for about $3-5 (?). an incredible line up of talent the likes of which we'll never see again.

This was my Dad's favorite song. I let everyone that said there goodbyes know it as well during my speech. I'm fortunate in this life to be raised knowing and loving his music, music that I continue to listen to even though he is gone. Awww....the Drifters! I am 78 and grew up in the fantastic 50's and sensational 60"s. Best music ever...no bad language. No hate, or racism in the music. The great groups were some black....Some white groups and many were mixed with both singing side by side in greatest music ever. Absolutely music lovers dream era..such great dance music. So thankful to hear these oldies but goodies again on youtube. Takes away the stress of today's trying times. 🎶⚘🎶

I was 18yo in 1959 in the Army stationed in Toul, France but TDY in Verdun on the TASCOM boxing team. I was in a bar late one Saturday night staring at my last 100 Francs (25 cents). I had a critical choice to make; get one last beer OR listen to the newly-arrived ,There Goes My Baby, one more time. The Drifters won!!

as an army brat , we moved around a lot, Every new place was full of new people. was living in Germany 57 thru 1960. This song was a real tear jerker at the time......I thought I was really in love with this little girl of 16.... They were transferred to a far away place.... I was devastated ....till the next month, I met another love. For some reason thought you only fell in love once, not true.....If your lucky, the best one is always the first. If not .......we must move on.... Thanks for this really great post......
