Yes Israel...but if they used a larger drone with a stabilising gyro...they could strafe the enemy as they flew past them....I would defy the average infantry riflemen to hit a drones moving quickly overhead while they are trying not to get hit....especially if there were more than one. And booby trap the drone to prevent them being captured...with a system to dis-arm the booby trap only operable by the person controlling them. What do you think.??

Put that 6 Rd grenade launcher or mk-19 on one and the 40mm freedom seeds will fix those issues. Those are very low recoil and have a blast radius. It would be glorious and honestly very effective at softening enemy positions. 3 drones carrying 6 40 mm grandes each would be vicious.

Yeah I already thought of a solution for that, a drone that basically relocates to vantage points and turns into a sniper rifle turret controlled by a human from far away, if enemy troops move to surround the drone just fly away and relocate, the perfect sniper turret. Also, it could be carried there by meteorological balloons full of Helium, or directly a small dirigible covered in Kevlar. If the dirigeble was broken, the heavy drone should be able to at least detach itself from it and return to base, a sniper in the skies that could be used along a thermal camera for night incursions, for border control, or in the hundreds to support a bigger land assault from the skies, imagine infantry and tanks on the ground and this in the skies landing shots into any enemy regardless of cover or trenches, enemies would have to shoot at the skies and would then be an easy target for ground troops.

You'd still have the same problem; the drone is too light to efficiently absorb recoil from a rifle via inertia alone. Even if you land the drone to take a shot, it's not going to be able to hold the barrel steady enough against the recoil to be accurate at any distance and you can forget about any follow up shots. You'd need to develop and attach some sort of anchoring mechanism which would be more weight for the drone to have to carry in flight, so you need a bigger drone which nullifies some of its sneakiness and capacity for infiltration as it would be a louder and more obvious target. In theory, if you made the drone big enough and heavy enough you could go for this approach but at that point you may as well just send in an attack helicopter

Fit the barrel of a firearm directly into the center of mass of the drone, you'd have to design the drone from the ground up to install the gun in a reliable position, if done correctly it should move straight back, but you'd have to design a drone that utilizes a belt fed mechanism for ease of access to reload and high cap, also it'd have to be a medium sized drone, a bit bigger than these ones, for stability in flight and payload capacity. Could strap mortars/rockets to the bottom then fly in to Abt a 50-100 meter range and start blasting and suppressing for an offensive attack with troops on a strategic location, deploying out of a "Host Vehicle" of sorts, such as a Bradley or similar troop transport. VTOL would be a useful function as well but it's not necessarily a necessity, idk seems like we've entered a different age of warfare, an "Assault Drone" would fit right in IMO, hire me plz Lockheed lol

@@55dbk Keep the barrel forward facing with 35° max vertical-horizontal movement with a fire control mode that switches between fight or flight mode, ammo bag compartment on top or sides of the internal weapons bay that would house the MG with metal feed ramp inside for smooth ammo intake, latch on bottom to secure and access door on the top, if full auto would be inherently unstable then switch to 5 round burst. Rockets could be mounted at a -10° to 10° firing angle on either side by their COM to the COM of the drone, firing angle could also be controllable. Design a dedicated mortar system that drops 4 or so mortars with a basic bombing camera & software. Would be strictly a support unit integrated with infantry. Designing things from the ground up requires you to run into issues and formulate ways to get past them, I never once said it would be easy in practice

If you could internally/externally bottom mount a smaller caliber gun into the drone. If the recoil was calculated It could be possible to calibrate the rotor's rotation, angle, and thrust to counteract the recoil of the firearm. While it would take some intensive coding it would definitely be possible with a quadcopter with independently controled rotors.

Its not very practical or accurate, and has to get too close to the enemy to be effective. The UAV mounted gun in the video is the Turkish Songar drone, and it has not been adopted by any modern military. However, Korea has also adopted this concept -- Aim Rifle Drone showcased at DX Korea 2022, with a K2 rifle.

What you need to do is make a strafing drone thats a flying wing with a machine gun mounted centerline like a10. That way it's more efficient than a rotor drone and you can tie the aiming into the control system (PID gain scheduling or something when firing vs when not firing)

Two ways this would work well. First way is to take a decent size 6 rotor drone eith good power maybe even an 8 rotor but 6 rotor would be more economical and streamlined and mount a belt fed submachinegun in an undercarriage style turret like the ones in the video but mount a separate high zoom camera inline with the barrel of the gun for aiming, maybe even mount an IR laser that the camera could pick up to make things easier. The next version would be to take 1 or 2 smgs or assault rifles depending on the size of the drone and mount them on the chassis of a good size 6 rotor or 4 rotor or even a fixed wing drone and do straffing runs like an old school fighter or an A10 warthog. Mounting them solid to the chassis and firing while straffing would eliminate the recoil problem. You'd still want a belt fed system though so it could have a decent ammo supply while being streamlined. They make many belt fed uppers for smaller light weight assault rifles... Everyone thinks they need to be high caliber firearms but the truth is an smg would be ideal because these drones can get in real close real fast without being seen right away and most soldiers only wear a plate carrier and helmet so pistol rounds would still be deadly, the increased ammo capacity, fire rate, and lack of recoil would be HUGE benefits!

The bore will need to be aligned with the center-mass to even have a hope of giving one a realistic evaluation of it's usefulness. Were i a weapons R&D engineer I'd first try getting a pivoting slot in the center of the drones mass, a ballistic computer for aiming, not use regular bullets but 20mm grenades and have a recoilless gun. Problem after that would be getting the cost down to acceptable level.

Very simple solution ... if recoil is the problem, eliminate it wiith the recoiless rifle round... no heavy barrel too, and the drone's range increases as it fires - the round has little net effect on the drone, and can be canister or belt loaded. Drones are especially well suited to sling this under or incorporate the light barrel balanced at their center of mass, and the projectile does all the propulsion work, with the hot gasses expanding out the back of the tube. Aiming, flying while shooting, and following the digital or analog images becomes much easier!!!

I think it’s mostly a computational issue. If the drone had decent AI to track targets and make pinpoint accurate estimations on bullet velocity and how the movement of the drone would effect bullet trajectory, you’d have drone which never stop before shooting and would be extremely lethal. Problem is, it probably wouldn’t be very easy to discriminate between friendly and foe, so very dangerous. A human wouldn’t have full control over piloting it.

I think the gun drones might be an effective night ambush weapon if their range is decent. No lights / fly in quickly , get in position and slaughter a bunch of enemies. Or just for getting a remote controlled sniper rifle into a crazy position to kill high ranking members of the other side etc.

Honestly that's only an algorithm problem that will be solved in the near future. Especially when you decouple it from human operators and let the drone operate autonomously, only letting operators select targets, not aim manually. Then drones don't have to stay stationary, but can do all sorts of evasive maneuvers while firing.

Gyrojets never worked well. They were highly inaccurate at a distance because the barrels were too short for the round to spin-stabilize itself. They were also nearly harmless at close range because the round accelerated more outside the gun. We would need some serious engineering to make a round that would spin-stabilize in the barrel while still carrying enough propellant to accelerate it to a decent speed.

If I remember correctly plane's we also just for recon and then a guy started dropping grenades out of one, then mortars, then they used pistols to try and kill other pilots then they put guns on them. Might be wrong but that's what I can remember.

Recoil is a big issue. Launching rockets is more effective imo. There is a drone called "Saika" for that.

This is identical to when planes were invented. Eventually, we adapted them to fight. It's only a matter of time until we engineer them to be versatile fighting machines with various armaments.
