In this new series, we will be covering the lore of some of the planets of Warhammer 40,000 as well as the main events and characters that have helped shape, for good or ill, the fate of these places. In this video we will focus on the events that happened on Isstvan V, mainly how the loyalist legions were betrayed and how Ferrus Manus, the Primarch of the Iron Hands legion fell fighting against his once-beloved brother Fulgrim.

What a delight it has been working on this lore video! I hope you enjoy it! Thanks to all of you who helped me bring it to life and to all Patrons and KZbin channel members that make these videos possible! There are many things to say regarding this particular episode. Let's start by saying that this is only a brief lore overview of the Drop Site Massacre and the events that happened on Isstvan V. There are many details that have been left out, like the fight between Lorgar and Corvus Corax in the middle of the madness, the intervention of Konrad Curze, the role titans played in the battle of the Urgall Depression, the aftermath with how Rogal Dorn takes the dire news of the massacre and immediately gives orders to Sigismund, the details of the Isstvan III atrocity and so on... I could go on and on and a full deep dive episode would be waaay more than the 41 minutes of this overview video. These are all details that we can explore in the future tho! If you like the idea. Also, feel free to let me know if you think we got a detail wrong. With a universe as complex as WH40k and covering an event as big as the drop site massacre, there’s always a possibility to miss something. On another note, I'm very happy with how the ship we built turned out! That animated background will serve for many episodes to come as we explore more of the 41st millennium. Thanks to the support of our Patrons and YT channel members we were able to commission the ship and upgrade how we tell stories. Also, the team did an excellent job for this one. Skrubasauras did an awesome narration and I love how he portrays emotion into each sequence/scene, bringing it to life. Adam and Audrey with their amazing voices as support cast, adding more immersion to the sections that needed it. Appreciate your take on ferrus. The other channels I've been to tend to give a rather uncharitable interpretation,but they never go into how much ferrus meant to fulgrim. He's the kind of guy who would order his own ship to be put in between fulgrim's and a charging diasporix vessel. Even though fulgrim brushed him saying he didn't need his help ferrus never held that against him. In fact the next time they met he explicitly instructed his warriors to not mention how they "saved" him and that was right before fulgrim was gonna let him onto the rebellion asking if he would join. So after getting knocked out by fulgrim,his own honerguard slain aboard his ship, and having his own fleet crippled he now has to contemplate the thought of what the hell did Horus see in Ferrus to make him think he would turn. Yeah a lot of things going on in his mind.

Agree with everything you said, and yeah - Ferris doesn't get the appreciation any of the other Primarchs get, due to being first to fall on Istvaan, in the first real battle of the Heresy. It was his own stubbornness that got him killed, as well as his entire elite cadre of officers as they tried to extract him, after failing to convince him to fall back. Fulgrim drew him into the ambush Horus had planned for the Iron Hands, Raven Guard and Salamanders. In all fairness, Vulcan also died that day, in an Iron Hands artillery barrage, but the Night Lords found his body, and due to his 'gift,' he regenerated and came back to life on Konrad Curze's prison ship, where he had Perturabo build a unique cage, built to contain a Primarch. Konrad would test his gift to its limits, and leave Vulcan a shattered mess from being brutally tortured and killed so many times, only to wake up after regenerating to have it done again and again... Everyone loves Vulcan though. Maybe cuz the Salamanders are the Legion that actually cares about the humans they protect, and they'll sacrifice themselves to save civilians, whereas most Astartes couldn't care less about the common people...like, at all. The Iron Hands, as a Chapter now, are really only known for their 'the Flesh is Weak' motto, and their habit of chopping off their own body parts so they can replace them with robotic limbs and organs. A veteran Iron Hand is more machine than flesh. They're not real popular, and I've never known anyone that plays an Iron Hand army on the tabletop, or even has a lot of love for the Iron Hands. They also have even less lore written about them than say, the Alpha Legion, 40k's most mysterious Astartes band of miscreants. Hell, the Alpha Legion is downright popular compared to the Iron Hands. They're certainly more interesting, even if (I'm pretty sure) that both their Primarchs are dead; Dorn killed Alpharius and Guilliman kills Omegon much later, I believe. But I'm not sure the Alpha Legion was even affected, since every single Alpha Legion Marine will tell you, 'I am Alpharius.' So it seems like not much is thought of Ferrus and his Iron Hands, and I suppose that's fair. Him and his Legion are kinda dull, and he was dumb for attempting to kill Fulgrim in the manner he did. Maybe GW decided that he would die first cuz they realized that the Iron Hands were pretty much the least cool Legion, and if someone had to go... Welp, Ferrus drew the short straw... It's kinda sad for the few Iron Hands fans out there, but if someone is looking to pick a Legion that's less popular than the others, the Iron Hands are a good choice. I mean, everyone will always be sick of the Ultramarines, right?

I forget the name of the book, but at the end, Omegon is sitting alone in his room, and he gets the vibe and knows his brother is gone, and when a phone call comes in, he picks it up and says the famous, 'I am Alpharius' line. @@johnhickman8391 We'll go with you being right. It's probably been...at least 2 years since I read that particular book. It's the one where Alpharius (or Omegon) wants to 'teach Dorn a lesson' and launches some crazy plan and attacks Terra's moon, I believe? Dorn catches up with him at the end, and doesn't even bother to listen to him explaining everything. He just chainswords him with a big, Primarch sized chainsword. I have a compulsion to read every single Horus Heresy book on earth, even the bad ones (although those are rare IMO), so after a while it all becomes a blur, y'know? I always enjoy Alpha Legion antics, tho. Dorn is kinda too single minded to be fun, but he's no joke when it comes to throwing down. I have a tad more faith in your memory than my own, tbh. 🤣

I absolutely love your in-depth analysis of the warhammer fantasy and 40k lore/universes. While I could go on listing several suggestions such as Calth or Signus Prime I would really like to see a video on one specific battle of the heresy however at the time of writing this I dont recall the name of the planet in which this occurred. I would suggest a video in this series regarding the battle that answers the question of why the god engines of the adeptus mechanicus and their pilots are so rare in the current setting (M42). The event simply known as Titan Death.

I personally prefer the older Fulgrim lore. It made him all the more tragic, as he never actually reneged on the Imperium, but was possessed through that Slaaneshi sword of his, his spirit trapped perpetually in a painting, doomed to watch as his body was used to murder his brothers and his people. Great video! Fulgrim and Legion are still two of my favourite HH books. They give both the alpha legion and emperors children a lot of background and humanity, while also showing how tragic the horus heresy was and how much the chaos gods played with the traitor primarchs. And also how they fell victim to their own individual traits inherited from the emperor.

Yes it was the sword that pushe Horus over to the dark. But it was Loken in Horus heresy pg 203 who asked the question why did the emperor not tell anyone what he was up to. Not even Horus who was the war master. This brought Horus great questioning at that moment starting the thought process of betrayal.

Considering what happened at Istvarn 3, it makes me wonder how much trouble the imperium could have avoided if the loyalists had simply virus bombed Istvarn 5...

Horus and the biggest players in the heresy, all dead. The remaining traitor legions decide to keep their perfidy secret in fear, after losing their newfound leader. At worst a lesser heresy would follow at some point and at best all traitors are found out and destroyed or pushed out of imperial space all the same.
