I don't think that a doctor has 100 million dollars to invest or knows the D.C. power players to hook up the military contract. This was big business territory, not opening a pharmacy on the corner.

Hey 20/20, you forgot to mention that Walgreens hired their own private investigator to review and collect data on Theranos and Elizabeth. And once that investigator did not recommend moving forward with partnering with Theranos, they just ignored it and did it anyway. Walgreens did not see or share a vision with Elizabeth, they just saw dollar signs.

Haven't finished watching the videos but this is the question in my mind, too. Not necessarily doctors in general, but where are her consultants in Laboratory Medicine? Either Clinical Pathologists or Medical Technologists. If one is trying to come up with technology involving diagnosis through blood tests, there should at least be people knowledgeable in that field in the team. All I see so far seem to be tech (computers, programs, machines) people... Edit: After watching this video, I saw one clin. path., but he sounded like an outsider, not someone involved with the company. Is there a part 5 to this?

They said in the video all departments kept separate and there was never any talks between them. So they probably lied to everyone. The one scientist they had probably got told lies and then everyone else was probably to that tests are going great. She lied to everyone in her company

They let the consultants take d test n their lab. After the pricking they will show the consultants around d facility (except the lab where the tests r really done)while waiting for the results. There was a scientist whose name appears on her patents and he was deeply involved in the company. He killed himself. His story and his wife appears on the HBO documentary "The Inventor" which is also on KZbin. It's really sad that her delusions and ambitions dragged in hundreds of people into her world. We all need jobs and I myself worked for a tiny startup which oddly enough had similar issues.

julio1c1saga have you seen the documentary on HBO? One of her female professors from Stanford had told her that a lot of the ideas she was presenting to her were impossible, but one of her male professors quit his job at Stanford to come work with her. Another female CEO had noted she thought it was interesting that she didn’t have at least one woman on her board of directors, all men. I think a lot of women saw past her bullshit but for some reason she seemed to charm a lot of men.
@TheNinetySecond

@@UrbanDecayLova247 I think a lot of that might be ascribed more to the glass ceilings in place, rather than any sex-specific charm Holmes may have had. Also, most of the men she convinced were either idiots in general, or woefully ignorant about the project she sold them. The few that either understood the project or came to understand how she worked dropped her pretty quickly.

She lied. She thought science and lab results can go with advertisement and marketing. Established technology first. Tested over and over again. Before she even open her mouth about the technology. You dont see scientists posing on magazine. Because they are too busy testing technology in the lab. Then publish it in scientific journals. Before they even present it on public forum/lectures.
@johntomasik1555
@johntomasik1555 2 жыл бұрын
It got that far thanks to classifications and claims allowed by the FDA for essentially self approval (under lab developed test classification). The FDA has several areas that allow products to reach the marketplace with minimal testing, if you have the ability to get the FDA to classify them as such. There are many ways to get around stringent testing. A great example are the many garbage reflective pulse oximeters that are being sold to the general public....never claim accuracy for a non-invasive device, and you can sell anything.

"We can not lose sight of how much we wanted to believe," is a quote that sums up the issue. Yes, Holmes was deceitful at the very least. But, how she got where she got in terms of funding, being supported in every way....well its a perfect example of the power of charismatic leadership - bad or good doesn't matter -- the masses support what makes them feel better/safer/more secure. The fact of humans making decisions based on perception vs reality has always been like that - for better or worse. In other words, the problem isn't people like Holmes, but the default of tribal thinking(eg., to quote from the video on the topic of why one investor invested millions ...because his friend did it!: "well if you're doing it, it must be good...", This, coupled with the lack of critical thinking in each of us, NO duh she raised millions.

If you were talking about the lab employees, they were under the guise that they were working on revolutionary medical testing and research. Additionally, I would imagine that many saw through the scam after working on it for a while, but probably had to sign NDAs and other documents to prevent them from commenting on their time at Theranos. I remember that a couple employees address the testing results with Holmes and Holmes literally told them to cover it up and fake the data. They had a revolving door of lab technicians and employees because of this, where employees are starstruck by Holmes and her "miracle" technology, then do testing and experiments only to find that something was amiss, they address it to Holmes or higher-up who told them to follow her instructions or get out, employees either comply (with low morale) or leave the company, new employees are hired and the cycle begins all over again.

This should have been a red flag. However, from what I have read in "Bad Blood" was that they feared missing out on the hottest trend. That is what happened with Walgreens, who even had an expert who advised them to NOT take the deal. Many medical researchers and professionals were hopeful but extremely hesitant about her work, specifically if it was scientifically sound at all, but since they were not the ones with money, many dismissed them.

And a decade or so later I remember thinking “there goes (unfortunately) another example that will pull back women’s careers in science and medicine by years, because of a foolish person’s choices in life”. What I was astounded was at the level she was able to pull funds and con experienced and important people in both business and politics - it’s an excellent case study for corporate governance and fraud prevention learning though.
