The Drunk is a Brazilian film released in 1946, directed by Gilda de Abreu and starring Vicente Celestino, who also wrote the song of the same name that inspired the film.
The plot follows the life of Gilberto Silva, a talented and promising young man, born into a humble family. He falls in love with Marieta, but the relationship is interrupted when she is forced to marry another, richer man. Disillusioned and aimless, Gilberto leaves his hometown and heads to the big city, where he ends up falling into alcoholism.
In the city, he becomes a successful singer, but his personal life continues to fall apart. Alcoholism and memories of the past haunt him, and he lives in a constant internal struggle between the man he could have been and the man he has become. His story is marked by encounters and disagreements, with people who love him and others who exploit him, until he finally finds a form of redemption.
"O Ébrio" is known for its dramatic performances and the melodramatic tone that marked Brazilian cinema at the time, reflecting the anguish and hopes of a society in transformation. It is a classic of national cinema and an emotional portrait of a life marked by losses, but also by a tireless search for redemption.
