I think Drach's take on planning a USN carrier raid on TIRPITZ is clever and much more realistic than what my grandfather described developing in 1943. He drafted a contingency plan with his air group officers for attacking TIRPITZ with the RANGER air group when she was attached to the British Home Fleet in late 1943. He makes no mention of the torpedo nets nor the smoke generators, so it's clear that he hadn't been briefed on those. He was familiar with her anti-aircraft armament and her 8-inch armored deck, the latter he thought would require 2000-lb armor-piercing bombs dropped from Dauntlesses. However, they would have required a minimum 10,000-foot ceiling for achieving enough velocity to penetrate the armor, and he knew the weather in norther Norway would rarely cooperate. He also thought the Avengers would deliver the coup-de-grace with torpedoes, so he clearly had more faith in the Mark 13 than was warranted (although I think that was typical for most of his contemporaries in USN aviation). Interestingly, he claims that the RANGER was sent to Iceland shortly after Operation LEADER to act as bait for TIRPITZ, SCHARNHORST, and company while the Home Fleet's surface force (including some American ships) were relieving Spitzbergen during Operation FQ and potentially intercepting the German raiders.

43:10 If you _can_ sneak that ship into a harbor, when you reach the center (deepest point) of the harbor, open the seacocks and flood it, then detonate it. You’d get a 50’ tsunami that would scour the land clean to a mile in from the water’s edge.

1:20:23 how can you leave out the magnificent treaty cruiser Algerie? 1:43:13 I'd expect the Minbari warrior caste to have almost exactly the same reaction as the Klingons from Star Trek. 2:23:28 Bismarck is a treaty battleship that displaces an extra 5,000 tons or so. It was comparable to Hood or the new KGB class, but much better than Renown and Repulse, so the British had a limited number of options for countering Bismarck.

Drach I like your reference to Babylon 5. You can also factor in the unpredictable human element here. For example, John Sheridan and his destruction of the Black Star. Or even a counter intuitive situation such as the finale of the episode Severed Dreams. Remember Delen's famous line to President Clark's fleet trying to re take Babylon 5: "If you value your lives, be somewhere else!"

Although 8 pints of beer sounds a lot, the alcohol content for the most part was quite low, brewed beer being saver to drink than water as the brewing process killed bacteria so much so that filthy duck pond water can be used to brew drinkable save beer.

1:50 Did the cost, whether to HMG or private enterprise, of scrapping _Warspite_ in situ at Prussia Cove equal the amount paid to HMG for the scrap? Woulda been cheaper to drydock her for a few years and restore her as a museum. Thoughts?

51:39 if you have multiple Essex class carriers doing this you should probably borrow a page from the Japanese and mix up the strike package from all three hulls. A carrier has a certain limited ability to spot aircraft and launch them from thw flight deck, but none will have the ability to spot and launch the entire airgroup as a single strike package. However, if you have about 36 aircraft from each of three carriers, then that may be launched as a single group from all three hulls and you can then work on getting the second group ready to go so they can launch 1-1.5 hours later and hit while the defenses are recovering.

3:35 8” howitzers with 70^ elevation. One of those coming down almost vertical against a hardened bunker will do more damage than a 14” hitting at 30-40^. And a cosmic ton of AA and multiple directors to engage against many threat vectors. Wouldn’t need massive belt armor because what is gonna him it? Extensive torpedo and mine defense because those still a threat.

Buy a cut glove to wear on the hand you plan on sharpening your sword with if you like that one. The white silver fabric material is fine unless you get stabby. Then you need the stainless mesh or the chain mail glove. Or if you are in a hurry or clumsy you would wear the cut glove under mail. I wear a cut glove after dropping the stone off the edge and cutting across the width of three finger tips. You will see what I mean. This may sound odd, but try to find one spot on your body to press the handle into. I hold my forearm down across my beltline and press the handle into my hip. I sharpen one side with the blade towards and one side away from me. My arm with the tool moves straight up and down, the angle is controlled by the wrist holding the handle only. My grandfather gave German swords to all this 4 children and I fixed the 70 years of abuse they had accumulated. One was spray painted silver and put to a bench grinder by a blind man (I assume). My mom and aunt used to sword fight with officer's sabers as kids.

Good idea! You already saw what 2000 lbs of tnt could do in Lebanon a couple year ago. A Liberty ship loaded with comp-c would effectively do more than the [off-target] Nagasaki bomb.
@dougjb7848 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. C4 is about 1.5 times as powerful as TNT. Your suggestion would yield equivalent to roughly 3000lbs (1.5kt) of TNT. The 1944 Port Chicago explosion is estimated at 1500 to 1750 (2000 lb.) tons (1.75kt) equivalent TNT. That explosion killed hundreds of people and razed a huge swath of the port and city. But within several months the damage had been repaired. Fat Man yielded equivalent to about 20kt TNT. Orders of magnitude more powerful than what happened at Port Chicago.
@SPR-Ninja Жыл бұрын
You're out by an order of magnitude. The beirute explosion was 1000T of TNT equiv, not 1000KG

Hypothetical: What if Beatty was on Queen Mary or Indefatigable instead? (I.e. what if it was his flagship that blew up instead?) oftentimes, decapitating the command wins battles, but I think in this case it would have the reverse effect. I think whoever takes command communicates better with Jellicoe, and the Grand Fleet “T” bags the Germans. Do you agree?
@hisdadjames4876 Жыл бұрын
😂There are three versions to every argument…your side, my side and the truth! Would be fascinating to hear Beattie’s perspective on that whole Jutland debacle.
@dougjb7848 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. As faulted as a fleet commander at sea may be, losing him would throw the fleet into total disarray, especially before instant-on communications. This would be compounded by Beatty not having created and distributed to his squadron and ship commanders a cogent plan of battle (“follow me until we sight the enemy and then we’ll shoot at him” is not _quite_ genius). Whoever succeeded him in command would likely have sought immediate disengagement from Hipper’s force and fallen back onto the Grand Fleet. The ensuing battle would have had a greatly different path, or perhaps not happened at all.
