Agreed. I was born in 96, but let's be honest, you don't really start to remember things until you're like 3-5. Hell, long term, I think we forget most stuff until we're like 7 or 8. But man, that DS Lite I got in 2009 was awesome. And then promptly traded in a few months later at GameStop for a DSi, lmao. Being able to play the games on the go was great. Especially when every summer my brother and I would head with our parents to see family on the other side of the US, which took 5 hours to fly. Many times we'd play Mario Kart DS or the minigames on New Super Mario Bros. I think I probably played the Wii more overall, but the DS is such a good console. I know the Switch has better games and has better hardware (obviously), but it's just missing stuff from the DS era. Imagine if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe let you do Download Play near anyone with a Switch. In some ways, the Nintendo DS is like the "Good Future" version of the Sega Dreamcast's story. In both cases, their creators were basically spurred into action by sheer terror of Sony's reputation. Sega hoped to reclaim a foothold in the console realm before the PS2 arrived; Nintendo feared the GBA wouldn't cut it when Sony entered the handheld arena that they had basically had to themselves for a while. They each arrived after their predecessors had been on the market for a surprisingly short amount of time (with how prominent the Game Boy Advance was, it's so weird to think it spent a little more than 3 years as Nintendo's top dog of the handheld world). While the Dreamcast was a tragedy despite genuinely impressive effort, with the DS, Nintendo took their already-thriving handheld presence to another level, in spite of tough competition from the PSP.

Great video! One thing that wasn’t stated in this video was that by dropping the “gameboy” name Nintendo was able to advertise to girls. Nintendog and Pokemon were massive hits and I remember the girls in my elementary school class playing them a ton. A lot Ds games just give me so much nostalgia. While for myself, we had a DS lite which my family shared, but later I got a 2ds for myself, most games I played on it were original DS games. New Super Mario Bros was one of the first ever video game I played and the first one I loved. Me and my sisters have probably spent way to much time with that games multi-player. I still remember my first time playing lego star wars the complete saga ds for the first time, completely freaking out because as a child I didn't understand how to use my lightsaber. One day my mom brought home a copy of the first professor layton game, which didn't have a case because she apparently got it from a colleague at work, and me asking her for help with almost every puzzle, being interested in the games story. And over time, I got all the rest of the games. Even though I'm younger than most people who grew up with a DS, I'm also really nostalgic for games on the DS.

I got a $20 garage sale DS lite when I was younger. It came with a few third party games and a Japanese Pokémon game, either platinum, diamond, or pearl. One day the hinge broke and then the cartridge slot stopped reading games, it was probably just dirty. I didn't appreciate the console much because I never played multiplayer with anyone, I couldn't figure out how to get the WiFi working on it, I never got any games other than what it came with, and I thought the "lite" naming meant it was a trial version or a downgraded version because I played a lot of free "lite" games on my mum's laptop. I tore it apart and it became landfill. I deeply regret that now. Half a year ago I got a $50 op shop DSi XL and now I'm playing all the games I wished I could play back then. It sucks I missed out on the peak of the console's popularity.

DS definitely was my childhood. My family wasn't exactly poor growing up but I never really got gifts much so no xbox 360 or anything unfortunately. I was fortunate enough to get a DS as a birthday present from my grandfather and my mother would occasionally buy me games for it. It definitely was a huge part of my childhood and what my nostalgic video game memories consist of. I do wish I could've grown up with a 360, PS3, or Wii but I had a DS and flash games to keep me busy I suppose. I've spent more time in MKDS and NSMB than I can count. I didn't enjoy SM64 much as a kid though. Wish I played more pokemon back then. I played a bit of heartgold on a friend's DS but only started getting into pokemon in middle school once I discovered emulation. I've also been revisiting some of the DS games I've missed recently like TWEWY with a DSi LL I bought off ebay for $60. The dual IPS/larger screens make a big difference and even though as a kid I wouldn't have cared much as an adult my expectations have definitely grown. I also have a 3DS I bought off a friend in high school for $50 which I've had some good times with but not to the same level as I did with my DS as a kid. These days I'm more of a Sony guy with a PS5 and a PC and I'm not the happiest camper about Nintendo killing off the dedicated handheld line they had with the GB/DS lines. Switch lite isn't a replacement despite how much they can pretend they are. I can't put it in my pocket and bring it anywhere. Nintendo's horrendous anti consumer business practices are also very difficult for me to turn to a blind eye to these days as well. If sony came out with a Vita 2 with the major issues from the first one resolved (mostly talking about proprietary memory cards instead of SD cards) I would be ecstatic to be honest. Closest thing that exists these days to what I'm looking for is the GPD Win 4 but the price is a major turnoff even if I do at least have a heavy investment in a PC library of games at this point.

Look maybe it’s because I’m an 03 kid so I have nostalgia, or maybe it’s because I’m always right. But the DS will always be my favourite console and best product Nintendo ever made. My brothers, sister and I would play together on long road trips. Yes my brother had a black ds and his was the only one that broke. But he was also the only one who experiences “gamer rage”. I personally had light pink, and my other brother had white. And we all definitely did(n’t) have an R4 with Pokémon on it (😉). My sister had a dsi because she was a few years younger then all of us so it was harder to get the versions we had. We all still have our respective ds but only my sis and I still play (probably because ours held up the best could it be the pink colours we had? Or was it because we were girls and gentle with our toys? The world may never know). Sometimes we look back on the photos we took my my sisters dsi and it’s crazy how many memories are captured on such a random console. The ds will forever hold a special place in my heart and I’d sooner sell my siblings then give it away.

One of the best things was in like 2011, I was at the airport and there was this other kid, he had a DS too, somehow we got talking and found out we both had Pokemon games so we battled and traded, still have some of the pokemon on my old save file! I agree 100% with never seeing the original model of the DS, I only saw it when I bought it years after. These things were the best for school trips, small enough that teachers and parents didn't immediately go "aha you took your DS" (there was always a no electronics rule) and we did exactly what you mentioned, I was the kid with Mario Party DS and my buddy was the kid with Mario Kart nothing beat spending 3 hours after bedtime playing these games. i was a rural kid and on my bus to school every single kid had a DS, and every single day we would play mario kart 7 to and from school, I remember the whole bus screaming and laughing, i remember when i found out about holding accelerate when the countdown hit 2 gives you a boost and how i was dominating all my games after that. it was truly some of the best memories i have, i don’t have my original pink DS lite that i got for my 6th birthday or something like that but i still do currently have a 3Dds I got for maybe my 10th or 11th birthday? crazy to think i’m turning 18 this year. Time flies

Such a great video and retrospective on the DS. It wasn’t my first console I had to myself, my first being the Gameboy Color, but I never really cared about the GBC like I did the DS. I was 12 when I got mine on Christmas of 2004 and I was absolutely hooked, a few years later when I found out about flash cards like the R4 I became even more hooked now that I could get any game I wanted for the price of one. I was a member of couple DS modding/hacking forums and am still friends with a handful of the people I met on them to this day. The DS definitely shaped my teen years quite a bit and I still look back on it fondly, I still have my OG Grey Brick DS and a flash card in case there’s ever a game I’m looking to play again and although that time hasn’t arose yet, I’ll never get rid of it.

While it wasn't my favorite Nintendo console, it was probably my favorite handheld console of all time. Aside from it having backwards compatibility, it's game library was simply amazing, despite the shovelware. It was even the best way to play some games like Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest V.

The DS is genuinely one of my all time favourite consoles, if I'm not mistaken most of the game reviews on my channel are of DS games, despite the console being underpowered I'd say it's absolutely a top tier console, the creativity and innovation on display is unlike any other!

this video has me reminiscing about my 30+ hours in lego star wars:TCS, (which i still haven’t finished, because flying missions are the bane of my existence) and getting trouble for writing curse words in pictochat during study hall, glorious times

I agree that It was clear even at release that the DS was meant to be a replacement for the GBA, Nintendo were just being careful in case the dual screen idea didn't work. Never owning one myself though I don't have a great deal of nostalgia for the system but it is a genuine shame that more handhelds didn't adopt the clamshell formfactor as it was great for portability.

I remember my mom convincing me to wait on getting a SP because when we went to GameStop they told us the DS was coming and I’m so glad I did, best handheld of all time, still play my lite 15 years later.

Your black Nintendo DS breaking theory actually just sparked some memories I'd forgotten about. Also Mario party DS is the best Mario party

My black and red DS lite also has a broken screen hinge so maybe they do break more easily. My dad actually bought replacement parts to fix it and those broke too. Black DS lites are just cursed to have broken screens I guess.

The DS was the first ever console I owned. I played on my brother’s DS since I was literally an infant and in 2010, I got a DSi for myself. I used to play New Super Mario Bros, Tetris DS, MK DS etc. The DS was the best handheld console imo.

This console was what actually brought me into gaming in the first place, and in addition to that, the R4 cartridge I had also been given by my parents led me to discover my love for the hundreds of games the cartridge came with, including but not limited to Mario, Nintendogs, Scribblenauts, Animal Crossing, Cooking Mama, Tetris, Trioncube, and countless others, especially licensed videogame adaptations of certain IPs. I would also get games that the R4 didn't have at the time, or games I was really passionate about during the reign of the DS. After Nintendo stopped making them, I would buy real copies of every game I had ever played on an R4 as a kid to add to my collection including new games I've never heard of, and still do even today. Also, I have since gotten multiple other consoles to discover and play even more games, including the DS' successor, the 3DS.

My black DS was built different. It alongside Pokémon Diamond survived sitting under a Bush for an entire winter and most of spring, and when I found it both of them still worked. Still have that Diamond cartridge today

In Europe they used the full fat DS cases all through the entire lifespan of the thing. European 3DS cases, despite being smaller, are actually also about 20%~ thicker than the ones used internationally (they finally stopped doing this with the Switch, though NOE still has a different box art template and frequently changes the cover designs compared with US ones). You may also be aware of the colored triangle identifiers, which match up with special European region codes (UKV = Green Triangle for the UK, for instance). This isn't just a Nintendo thing, though. A lot of jewel and game cases in Europe are a larger size for various historical reasons, including for marketing, differences in retail store display/layouts and laws surrounding plastic manufacturing. US Blu-Ray and HD-DVD cases, for instance, are about 2/3rds the thickness of UK cases.

Having an older brother, I was used to “sharing” all of our consoles and games, but de DS was the first time I ever had my own console. I was one of those weirdos who had the “original” first edition of the DS, it used to be my brother’s before he got a black DS Lite for his birthday. But I think it might’ve been too great of a responsibility for a 7 year old to have, as I vividly remember the day I dropped my DS in the toilet just a few months after having it passed down to me :))) Ahh, such fond memories…

God it’s so great to see all this. Mario Kart… Pictochat… WarioWare DIY… and Tomodachi Life on the 3DS. I really hope Nintendo makes another DS or something because really nobody is being as portable with the switch as they did with the DS. Also wish they made a Mario party much more like the DS version, with kinda a campaign story with bosses. Great game. DS will live forever.

To be fair, The WiiU didn't come with two screens, but rather was A two screen experience presumably using a tv you already had. Funny thing about the comment on Phantom Hour Glass not necessarily being the best place to start is that It was my first Legend of Zelda game I played and quite enjoyed it for exactly why others dislike it. I had fun maximizing my time usage in the main dungeon! Of course I do think Spirit Tracks is the better game, but I really do still love Phantom Hour Glass as well😊.
