Dubliners - Dublin In The Rare Old Times Lyrics
Raised on songs & stories, heroes of re-known
The passing tales & glories that once was Dublin town
The hallowed halls & houses, the haunting childrens' rhymes
That once was Dublin city in the rare ould times
[Chorus:]
Ring a ring a rosie, as the light declines
I remember Dublin city in the rare ould times
My name it is Sean Demspey, as Dublin as can be
Born hard & late in Pimlico, in a house that ceased to be
By trade I was a cooper, lost out to redundancy
Like my house that fell to progress, my trade's a memory
& I courted Peggy Dignan, as pretty as you please
A rogue & a child of Mary, from the rebel liberties
I lost her to a student chap with a skin as black as coal
When he took her off to Birmingham, she took away my soul
[Chorus]
The years have made me bitter, the gargle dims my brain
'Cause Dublin keeps on changing & nothing stays the same
The Pillar & the Met have gone, the Royal long since pulled down
As the great unyielding concrete makes a city of my town
[Chorus]
Fare thee well sweet Anna Liffey, I can no longer stay
& watch the new glass cages, that spring up along the quay
My mind's too full of memories, too old to hear new chimes
I'm part of what was Dublin in the rare ould times

One of the best examples of Irish musicianship that I have ever heard! Such wonderful instrumentation. And the quintessential and irreplaceable, Ronnie Drew. This could not be called anything else but a truly classic performance. The bar can go no higher! This music deserves to be better known and loved and cherished , thankyou so much!

I went to dublin for my honeymoon in 1994. My late husband was an irishman. Went back in 2019 and nothing was the same. The song is specific to dublin but its just as accurate for many a town thats been sanitized of its character. I barely recognise my home of glasgow any more

@abbeyharry1952 A cooper is the trade of barrel making, heating the wood by steam and bending the steel around it to secure it. Would have been a good trade way back in the day for storing things, shipping, storing Guinness etc, plastics and metals came along and became cheaper, hence "lost out to redundancy"

Though surely stronger for Dubliners, the sentiment of this song resonates with all those who see development change the face of their towns. On the other side of the Atlantic, I hear it and think of the new business lofts on main street, the Italian restaurant where the laundry used to be, the mill sitting empty, the old school replaced by the big new one, and our dirt roads in the hills paved over. They've put up a four-story apartment building and a chain grocery.

If you did your research you'd know that the smith would make the metal rings for the barrels and the cooper would make the barrels with the rings [quote: Wikipedia] Traditionally, a cooper is someone who makes wooden staved vessels, bound together with hoops and possessing flat ends or heads. Examples of a cooper's work include but are not limited to casks, barrels, buckets, tubs, butter churns, hogsheads, firkins, tierces, rundlets, puncheons, pipes, tuns, butts, pins and breakers.
