Word to the wise: don't say that a team's secondary is not that good if (a) it is good and has multiple Hall of Famers, and (b) you wind up having a terrible game against them
In the 1999 divisional round of the NFL playoffs, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers played the Washington Redskins, and Redskins wide receiver Michael Westbrook decided that it was a good idea before the game to say that the Buccaneers had a bad secondary, even though they had one of the best pass defenses in football, and even though they had Ronde Barber and John Lynch, two Hall of Famers, back there. Shocker- it did not work out well for Westbrook at all

To be fair, when he was drafted, they thought he was the next Michael Irvin. That was a pretty good comparison at the time. The potential was there but just needed a more no nonsense coach than Norv Turner. He could've been special but needed to be reigned in. Michael Irvin had Jimmy Johnson. Westbrook didn't. That's where coaching becomes the difference maker because it builds culture.

1. Year One of the Dan Synder error; still the only season where the Commanders won a playoff game at FedEx Field. 2. Michael Westbrook and Stephen Davis had a fight during training camp in 1997. 3. Then that season, Westbrook removed his helmet, getting an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty which cost the Redskins a chnace to possibly get an OT Field Goal against the Giants. That was also the game where Gus Frerrotte whiplashed himself.

I don't know what the hell Westbrook was thinking when he talked about the Buccaneers' secondary like that because the Buccaneers had the one of the best such DB rooms in modern NFL history. What he said looked asinine at the time. John Lynch being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Rondé Barber finally joining him there, Westbrook managed to look even worse. This wasn't one of those things that looks bad in hindsight. Westbrook looked bad on the spot! Lynch was being kind calling Westbrook's performance "average!"

I feel bad for Turk because the last snap of that game and of his life was a bad snap that cost Washington that game. About Westbrook, I also remember a fight between Colorado and the Miami Hurricanes in 1993. I don't know who started or participated in it, but I thought Westbrook was involved in it. I know the NCAA changed the rules about fighting as a result about suspending players involved in such a fight.

Pathetic this was Synder’s first and best season. Last time the stadium was called jack Kent Cooke before it changed to fedex. They had all sorts of characters in the team: Brad johnson, Steven Davis, Brian Mitchell, Darrell green. Added Bruce smith, Deion sanders, Lavar Arrington. It was all down hill for Synder’s tenure from here.

Cincinnati was the team Michael Westbrook played for in 2002 (Did they get him through Trade or Free Agency?), his final season in the NFL. Also looked a bit into his stint with Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu a few years after he left the league. I find it interesting seeing what former players did after their NFL careers ended, since you can find things you wouldn’t think about, especially if the player is otherwise obscure. It helps us remind ourselves that players are people just like all of us and that by researching this, we learn about players that time would’ve forgotten about.
