The first two games were definitely darker than the rest of the series tbf, given that it was before the progressively quirkier side content became a main focus. Even with it being a big focus now, the main stories still remain pretty serious and emotional a lot of the time and I wish people talked about them when bringing up the games, but I get the sillier stuff is a big draw and it's not worth being gatekeep-y about. That being said implying Nagoshi's behavior was becoming "troublingly" reflective of the ACTUAL Yakuza is a hilariously insane stretch.
@smellvadordali98067 ай бұрын
@@theboywonderlol I absolutely adore the way Yakuza handles its tone. I think the quirkier stuff suits the series better ultimately than the tone of the first two, but I like that it hasn't descended into farce. It doesn't feel inappropriate or jarring when it decides to be serious, or when it decides to be silly.

It's a purposefully stupid exaggeration of how it looks to a fan who knows nothing about the people behind what they love, that the man who once made the identifiably jovial and innocent series, now works on the one that is identifiably grim, and dangerous at a surface level. @akirbyobsessee73967 ай бұрын
@@jvts8916 Yeah, back when Compile Heart was just the original Compile, they made Puyo Puyo as a spinoff to their computer rpg series Madou Monogatari. The success of Puyo went absolutely BONKERS, well beyond any previous successes, so they fully adapted the Madou universe into the new puzzle game series, changing its tone and lore to fit a new identity, and then went ham on making tons of different games and ports, organizing entire massive irl tournaments, and merchandising the series as hard as possible. All the cash thrown at the publicity and merchandising caught up with them when it started to underperform, so SEGA was brought in to start being Compile’s Puyo-publisher, resulting in SEGA’s branding on Puyo Puyo Box. Compile was in too deep, though, so a deal was cut to buy the Puyo franchise *alone* off of Compile, while the original company maintained their other IPs, *including Madou Monogatari.* The legal repercussions of this is that Compile Heart- which legally retains the rights to its old projects- can now use the Madou Monogatari name, but not its characters. SEGA, thanks to the Puyo acquisition, can use Madou’s full character roster so long as they’ve appeared in a Puyo product (Arle, Schezo, Rulue, Satan, Carbuncle, etc), but *can’t* use the Madou Monogatari name. This is why SEGA, upon initially acquiring Puyo’s license fully, rebooted the franchise with the Fever games, which focused on SEGA original characters in a new dimension. Arle and Carbuncle only made small appearances, and SEGA only felt confident enough to use the original cast again after they reappeared in 15th Anniversary. Compile Heart released a spiritual successor to the Madou games under the original title, but with brand-safe clones of the original character archetypes. Luckily for us, though, Compile and SEGA are working together again; a true Madou Monogatari sequel in the modern day, with the original cast and art style, is in development as we speak!

Thank you for making a video about this. That video was honestly bugging me for a while now. I find it hilarious to me that Nick treats Banana Blitz like it killed his entire family. As someone who really loves the Super Monkey Ball series, and has played Banana Blitz (both the Wii and HD versions) I can say that while it isn’t as hard as the original Monkey Ball games, it does still offer a good amount of challenge. I'd never describe the game as being entirely easy. Besides, of course, it wouldn't be as hard as the original Monkey Ball games. It was a launch title for a console mainly aimed at a casual audience. I just find it hilarious that Nick takes that as such a personal attack and that he's speaking for an entire fanbase. Besides, everyone knows the worst Super Monkey Ball game is Super Monkey Ball Adventure lol

The guy who didn't like how Pikachu looked in the Detective Pikachu movie. 3.) The guy who lost his sh*t over the word "kindness" being misspelled in Animal Crossing New Horizons. I was already well aware that he was some guy who just whines about the most meaningless things you and I can think of, like "oh no they dared to render Mario's hair as individual strands instead of making it look like solid flat plastic" and "oh no they made the Wii U logo fuzzy on this Super Mario 3D World box". Also is the guy who worked on Super Monkey Ball not allowed to work on the Yakuza series Nick?

i am very much not over the way he talks about Nagoshi, it's so wacky and dramatic. fellas is it "sacrifice" for newer creative art forms to take more priority in your career and to *checks notes* change your appearance
@EggmanDrCuckooMan7 ай бұрын
It's not even like Yakuza/Like a Dragon was a sudden shift in Nagoshi's creative output as a director - just look at SpikeOut, an arcade beat-em-up that carries quite a bit of Yakuza's goofier energy and has recently been given a more direct connection than ever by being featured in Infinite Wealth as one of its included arcade games. (SpikeOut also fucking slaps as a game, and if you play it, you'll quickly hear a couple sound effects used again in Monkey Ball, to complete the circuit of connections further.) Also, while a more tenuous connection, another Nagoshi-directed Amusement Vision Gamecube game features over-the-top melodrama with often ludicrously silly scenarios to compliment them. That's right, F-Zero GX, baby - Nagoshi really did direct one of the best arcade racers ever made, shortly after two incredible arcade marble-type games, shortly after one of the best classic arcade beat-em-ups of all time, all before creating an absolute smash hit crime drama/slice-of-life brawler RPG series that is now a pillar of Sega as a whole. It's kind of insane how absolutely cracked Nagoshi's catalog of work is for how little people ever seem to connect him to any of it besides Yakuza and, occasionally, Monkey Ball.

The framing of 'The Rise and Fall of' or 'The Death of' etc. in the context of video games is so annoying to me. Like, as though a video game (or worse, the intellectual property it uses) is a living breathing thing, and it only stays alive as long as people keep playing it. The more time people spend playing it the more good the game design is and I guess Fortnite is the best game ever made.

i think it should be emphasized that banana blitz HD read (to me at least) like an attempt to redeem a game that people were sour on in the past by updating its control method and changing the level design to accomodate said control method. it's a perfectly fine game and i dont know why fans got so aggressive towards sega for this release, especially when putting work towards games with poor reception feels way more interesting than "remaking" games that were already good in the first place.

i'm not like a nick robinson fan or anything (i think the monkey ball video is bad, even), but his writing feels very silly, facetious, and tongue in cheek here. I dont think he actually harbors any resentment towards toshihiro nagoshi or thinks that he "sacrificed his baby" or anything like that. I'm not even sure it's particularly dry. Its a video where he compares nagoshi to a yakuza member and then by the video narrative's logic plans a crime to protest "a bad video game". I remember back when i was like 16 and did watch his videos, he liked the label "investigative shitposting" to describe his work. I dont really think there's any investigation being done but shitposting very much so. Though i think there is an argument to make that the video may be some flavor of post-ironic. Like, i think he does genuinely resent the fact that sega chose to remake banana blitz, but i also think he recognizes the absurdity of the things that he's saying and is playing them for laughs.
@Hasselia7 ай бұрын
Being ironic leaves you pretty open to being misinterpreted. Folks may not realise you agree with them and reject your media because they don't agree with the ideas you're presenting. Worse, though, is people who may not agree with you but agree with the ideas you're presenting and embrace it as a piece of their culture. Having ironic humour as the backbone of a video essay / informative media seems like a terrible idea to me honestly. Also, who is Nick Robinson? Genuinely never heard of him before.
