Not sure I'd classify the Variant rewards as "diminutive". There's some sweet glam that if you take the time to grind for on day one it can give some nice profit as well. There's also a bit more incentive to run them because of the random drops like minions, furnishings and parasols. Then of course there's the unique mount for all endings. Overall I'd say they nailed the reward structure with Variant specifically, it's Criterion that misses the mark since given its difficulty (some mechs are savage-adjacent already in the "Normal" mode): you barely get anything for the coins and you can't even earn them in the savage mode either. The mount is neat, but everyone asked for some extra gear options even if it were 5 ilvl behind the current tier, hopefully that improves in Dawntrail because the idea itself is pretty neat and the combat design is dope too.

The completion mounts for the Variant Dungeons are all fantastic. For me, those alone were worth the effort, but getting some pretty neat glam pieces and emotes was also pretty nice! I did almost all of them solo. Entirely possible thanks to the Variant Actions... did all of mine as Red Mage. No sweat. Except that one time the hardest boss of Sil'dihn gave me 5 vuln stacks.... that didn't go so swell...

These dungeons have some pretty rewards in the form of pets and other miscellaneous things like furnitures and the parasol Cider got in the video. If you are reading this and want to grind, remember that you get an additional chest (and thus an additional chance at this loot) if you take the route the npc suggests at the start. Nice to help the monotony since you might fight different bosses.

yeah that's why that boss suddenly had different mechanics to what Cider'd just done previously, the Amall Ja one. its cause the route you take determines not only what boss you fight, but what their mechanic cycle is. its not a huge variation, at least not in normal mode (i know in Mt. Rokkon the ninja boss changes her mechanic spread between the two zones you can fight her in, at least) but its enough that if you dont cotton on to how it works its a rapid wipe chain.

had one happen during one of my few good Frontline matches. was so close to a BH5 (something i've never reached before) our team pushed VERY far into yellow, i saw the writing on the wall, cast Return, bar fills...and nothing happens. then two seconds later the bar pops back up saying "CANCELLED!" i'm surrounded by like 20 dudes, cant get away, die and proceed to spend the rest of the match (we were getting ROFLSTOMPED the whole time through and even with that mega push we still werent a credible threat in terms of points to EITHER team) fuming because a RANDOM LAG SPIKE (i pray everyone causing these DDoS attacks suffers a bleeding anus) that definitely wasnt on my end cause i'm Wired (and would be finally cursing out my ISP for their router having random sudden update cycles with no warning whatsoever) took away my best chance at my first ever BH5. And i've been playing for over 3 years. sad, i know.

Criterion is my favorite content to heal (as a WHM main) because the responsibility 90% falls on you alone, and you don’t have to worry about adjusting for a cohealer. 2:38 It always amuses me how casually teleportation is taken. It's not the first time in a Final Fantasy game that people who is not used to teleportation just says "what was that? where are we?" like they took a left turn when traveling by car or "let's see where this goes" like riding a bus. I mean, even if teleportation is common in your world, there's no way of telling that you can just turn back if you don't like the destination when touching a random symbol on the floor in the middle of a ruin.

to be fair, given how canonically powerful we are (and that we DO canonically have a linkshell with direct line to multiple other people outside of the dungeon that could come help) its probably an instance of "i am with my friend who happens to be strong enough to kill the living embodiment of existential dread, who has allies outside this place that are strong enough to *not die* against said living embodiment of existential dread, so if anything goes wrong and they cant carve us out themselves, they can call their friends to just try to retrace our steps and find us a way out in short order." VS the end of ARR's "i'm casting Warp Zero and the destination is set to 'anywhere not here' but has a 30% chance of killing us outright so lol get fucked nerds!"

I adore Variant dungeons, but I do wish there was some kind of long-term incentive to go back to them more. Maybe if they were an option in WT or something?? But part of why I love them is how the boss mechanics adjust in response to the different choices/paths you take while getting all the different endings. Really gave me a "He's not serious, is he?" moment ~ 12:30 when Zeless Gah was casting "Infern WELL" instead of "Infern GALE" and Cider expected the same mechanics lmao.

Oh wow, over the course of enough runs of Sil'dihn Subterrane to get the entire glam set, I got one piece of furniture: the chair, which at the time was selling for less than 1k gil. I didn't know getting two in one run was possible.

Two things for Variants in the future. If you go the same path as your escort you will get a bonus chest which can have the minions and such. And also going DPS is the best option (viper less so they fall off hard compared to all the other jobs at 60/70/80/90.) cause Variant Rampart is so good and the regen when you need it also is

@@Xenmaru00 all DPS roles are GREAT however Viper is just weirdly low when not at 100, like near the bottom of all DPS. Often when they don’t get one skill, it effects a lot more than that since there’s so many double weaves missing etc. Reaper is really good, Monk as well. Honestly MOST melees are the best choice due to not having any positionals so you always get your full potency.

For those wondering, the reason the boss had different mechanics on repeat is that it's part of the way this content operates. The route you take to each individual boss determines both A ) your ending and B ) the mechanics the boss has. While there is some overlap in mechanics between the different versions of each boss, they'll all have 2-3 mechanics that differ between their variations.

Honestly, I like variant dungeons. I did them solo the first go, so that I can properly appreciate them (yes, WAR is cheating, why do you ask?) and afterwards did a lot of "guided tours" for less savvy FC mates, and I love the visuals, rewards and lore. Of course I am a bit of a lore nerd, so that does affect the amount of dopamine I get from each run. There are a surprising amount of little things to notice.

Cider, obviously it's too late for this one, but the Variant dungeons have a bit of a THING. Depending on the path, same bosses when taking an alternate path to them will have subtly altered mechanics. And the first boss will sometimes have a choice that alters a mechanic, even if it doesn't change the ending pathing (opening the pipes on the left path is one of those as I recall). Something that could be of use when you dive into the other two (so far) Variant dungeons.

Personally the endings and story ARE the reward in these dungeons. Gear grind is pointless when you can clear all content and just buy the best gear from a patch ago. Eventually we’ll get the ironworks equivalent that will outclass the whole expansion anyway.

I love the variants, all the goofy puzzles are actually really clever if you try to figure them out yourself, or with friends, it's actually the perfect content for a couple of people because how its balanced to any party size and the bosses are pretty fun. Tho my fave part is definitely the midboss Geryon because while every boss is different on each route he's always the same, and if you read his lore card it explains he's some ambitious giant who wants to build his own empire in the underground ruins. So he's constantly running between routes with armfuls of bossfight gimmicks, probably extremely out of breath, every time you pick a route, hurriedly setting up his stupid mechanics just in time for you to show up and kick his ass repeatedly.

i love the variant dungeons ;D i kinda used them to come back in the game after my break xD 4:58 you can bonus chests if you take the way the npc is "offering" .. its the same for all 3 variant dungeons from endwalker ... and i assume it will be the same with the one coming in dawntrail 7:12 you even see it you get it in the chat if you get a new log ... and you get them in that moment you kill the boss 20:34 well there is a map achievement for the normal and hard version of the variant dungeons xD 27:33 i love the "secret" fights in the variant dungeons ... not that i wouldnt like the normal bosses there .. ;D i loved this variant dungeon the most not because it was the first but the background story in it was pretty interesting in my opinion the other 2 where a bit lame ... but maybe i just enjoyed the time with nanamo the most i dont know xD i did all 3 of the dungeons solo nobody had really interest in them ... and they are solo the most fun to be honest they too easy with a bigger group xDD 29:24 to be fair it must be something around 1.5 years now im not playing for 2 years but i was already 90 when this came ;D dont change the fact that this is not even close to new content of course xD 29:36 and it uses the music from the dungeon ... i love the mounts from the variant dungeons :D

First, glad you're OK. Second, the reason the boss had different mechanics is because you flipped the switch before hand differently. The different switches and paths and such determine boss mechanics. Doing different stuff can lead to new endings - maybe, I mostly lucked into finishing the Subterrane and haven't tried the rest. The lore you get from other endings or the stuff you see in other paths also gives you hints for other paths and endings (which you probably knew).

Soooo, fellow triple triad card collector here! Again, wanted the mount...and to prove to my partner that you CAN actually get all the cards in the game. I got down to 1 card left...Lightning. And I mean, I had her left for a sweet, sweet while. Didn't matter what I did, that bitch wouldn't drop. I said by Dawntrail, there was no way I would go through another expansion, another 100 cards or more, just waiting for her to drop. Got to the final week, my final chance before DT dropped. Final card, and I got her. I actually screamed so loudly it was unbelievable. Why? Because that was a 2 and a half year grind. Just to say I finally got every triple triad card in the damn game. I seriously hope you have it easier because fuck me...never again.

Progress report. Lalachievements score 17,030. I'd say that any hope of regaining my lead is long forgotten, but the reality is that I just haven't really been putting in the effort. Another slow week. I got the achievement for clearing the last fight of the new raid tier 5 times, between doing my own run for gear and running with friends for their gear, and I picked up Mixing It Up: Apprentice while doing in-between crafts for CRP furniture to marketboard. And that's it. I've enjoyed Dawntrail quite a bit, but at the moment I've only really got one friend actively playing. Two more are very slowly making their way through MSQ, and several others are so slammed by work this summer they haven't even started, so my usual group of people to do content with is somewhat fractured, and doing group content with friends is the stuff that gives me fuel to do achievement grinds and the like.

Of note, but the Variant dungeons not only synch your gear but also buff up every role to have about the same damage, so imo doing it on Tank is the easiest since you have a ton of mitigation from your kit and the Spirit Dart action is very strong too. Also going the same path as the npc gives you 2 chests before the final boss and while most of the time the chests just have fireworks there is also a chance for minions, housing items and fashion accessories, all of which sell for a ton because nobody does the content. That last part is also true for all the things you can buy with the podsherds from the npc vendor since for some reason they made everything sellable lol Edit: Also Also, changing things to trigger different paths ALSO changes the boss mechanics, so thats why those Staffs suddenly pull you in instead of pushing you back or why Silkie summons Jugs in one fight but not the other. Edit Edit: I find it funny how your connection says EXCELLENT despite the fact you keep having massive issues for almost 2 weeks now after a couple hours of play, something is definitely screwed.

some1 probably already posted this, but too lazy to search further, hence just gonna re-iterate: variant final bosses would have one specific skills tied to each ending path attempts, hence one would not find it repeated on another ending path, they will still do same movements outside that one particular difference, hence it's a good thing if not repeating runs, though not so great since iirc one of ending path does drop unique stuff one can't just buy from MB, thus the need to unfortunately repeat if not so lucky with drops. iirc it was triad card. Also regarding triad card farms, not long ago found my 5 defo sets that'll take care of any kind of foes, not logged atm but it was for general, same/plus, ascension, descension, & forgot last one. They does makes it way easier to farm those cards & mine atm only left with those drop-only content farm cards. & about those dcs, mine usually ran ping command on repeat @ the side window, so that it was easier to check if pings was getting very erratic & easier to avoid relogging attempt getting one exiting game instead due to lobby error, or just to decide ahead if the shown pings were good enough for that grind or better move to do another thing that's not heavily latency-relies. Anyways, the latest variant dungeon, Aloalo, kinda does ties to current 7.0 msq, thus atm no idea how it would affect if one completes all 12 endings on it 1st then 7.0 msq or do msq then goes back doing Aloalo. Knowing this due to mine already done Aloalo some time before 7.0 msq & it does mentions Aloalo for quite some topics on later stories.

For the Variant Dungeons, while you "can" run it with up to four players, everything scales to a degree. And by scales, I mean that the bosses' health pools get larger. Everything will still die faster than if you're going solo, and if you bring rez, single deaths aren't a reset. Just make sure you bring friends with you to experience the torture together and make it a little more bearable.

I think also this week/last week of July, Windows pushed out a ton of updates. I kept getting 90002'd (and it badly affected games loaded from Steam too) until I looked at the Windows Update and saw the long list waiting to be installed. I don't think my pain of getting continuously logged out of Endwalker patch quests compares to this, though. Hope this week goes better for you!

I wish variant dungeons had a roulette associated with them. I'd love to be able to hop into them with random people. I still occasionally do Sil'dah solo just to hang out with Nanamo. Helps take the sting off of not being able to invite npcs to your island...

i kinda do too, but understand why they wouldnt cause its kinda the same as the OG MSQ roulette and how there was a crapload of story slowing down everything. if you notice, they didnt add anything beyond first half of ARR to MSQ roulette even after the rework of those dungeons. I imagine Variant kinda falls under the blanket of "there's too much involved and people would bitch about how long it takes so best not to bother."

Do the Variant Dungeons go faster with more people? I soloed every for two of them (and most of the routes for the third) and it just felt like they dragged on and on and I'm wondering if I should've just shanghai'd some people into doing all the work.

yes if the people you play with are above average. The variants scale with player count so things will be tougher with 4, but if your 4 are actually good at the game then it will balance out in your favor
