The Dunglen Hotel - Thurmond, West Virginia

In 1901 an opulent hotel was built along the banks of the New River, across that river from the coal town of Thurmond. This hotel went on to host political conventions and provide the liquor, gambling and women banned by Thurmond.
Today we tell the story of the Dunglen Hotel, part of the history of Appalachia.

A lot of history there at Thurmond. I like to road trip there often and take it all in, it never gets old. I like to take the old mountain road from there to where it brings you out by the Stretchers Neck Tunnel. Great job on the presentation.

Believe it or not there was a medal of honor winner who came from Thurmond. His name was Charles Rogers. He attended a black school in Mount Hope called Dubois. There is a bridge in the Chimney Corner area of Fayette County that is named after him.

The post office was open until the mid 90's. The only reason it shut down was because the postmaster "Bigboy" passed away. I grew up in Thurmond and left there in 1989. I remember the bank being open when I was young. It was eventually turned into a restaurant called the Bankers Club for the increasing amount of tourists & whitewater rafters.
