Gordon Laxer, former Director of Parkland Institute and Dylan Jones, President of the Canada West Foundation, debate the following questions: What is 'Dutch Disease? Is Alberta and Canada experiencing it? More broadly, what are the economic, social, and political implications of petroleum-based growth?

He has been a political economist in the Sociology Department at the University of Alberta since 1982. He is principal investigator for a five-year, $1.8 million research project, Neo-liberal Globalism and its Challengers: Reclaiming the Commons in the Semi-Periphery: Canada, Mexico, Australia and Norway, principally funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). He is the author of a forthcoming book, Freezing in the Dark: Oil Independence for Canada.
Dylan Jones joined the Canada West Foundation as President and CEO on June 1, 2012. Previously, Dylan was the Deputy Minister, Intergovernmental Affairs, Executive Council in the Government of Saskatchewan.
Dylan's career has been diverse, focusing on many dynamic areas that range from health care reform to international trade policy.
His impressive background comprises legal and policy roles within the federal government, including the Federal Court of Canada and the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), and various senior positions in the Saskatchewan government.
As Deputy Minister, Dylan's portfolio included key files such as the creation of the New West Partnership, the Canada-Europe Trade Agreement, and foreign investment strategy.

Contrary to what I have read, second speaker did not show any proof of saying. Citing the bible does not count. Dutch disiese and oil curse are vastly researched even by the UNCTAD and the World Bank showing permanent patterns after the oil production sets in a country ...The Dutch desiese has 2643 citations.. It is interesting How Dylan didn't offer one single reference while speaking. I wonder if the references were in the pamphlet that the audience was given.
