Excellent review and a very much same experience to my own. I bought the Dynaudio Evoke 10 in April this year. I agree with Steve that they have some qualities of the Harbeths. But compared to Harbeths the Dynaudio Evoke are more detailed and fast. Like Harbeths on steroids. I also had the KEF R3s for some time and sold them. They are both very detailed and fun speakers. The Evokes are better and more relaxed with streaming digital music and lower quality recordings. I can listen to the Evokes all day long while discovering new music from Qobuz and Apple Music. With the KEF R3s I would get very exited at first and then tired of listening after hour or two. If you need bigger sound I would recommend going for the next speaker in Evoke line. I did eventually buy the Evoke 50 floor stander for another room. I feel like I have reached my audiophile endgame with these.
@gustavos3665 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for your comments. I have the Kef R3 and was wondering how they would compare to the Evoke. Which amp are you using? What kind of music do you like best?
@tamil.f.37345 жыл бұрын
@Gustavo S. My set up is Evoke 10, Naim Unity Nova 80W integrated amp with internal DAC+streamer. Second system with Evoke 50, Naim Supernait 2 80W integrated and separate DAC+Streamer Naim NDX 2, Technics SL1500C turntable. The Naim amplifiers have a great synergy with Dynaudio. I tried the Evoke 50 with Hegel 590 300W and liked it but not as much as the Naim. The Hegel is a superb amp and the combo with Evoke 50 had an unbelievable midrange, warmer, fuller and meatier sound than the Naim. Naim on the other hand a little more sparkle in the top end while being still relaxed and well balanced. Hegel is also more expensive. Another amp I had a chance to test for few weeks was Yamaha A-S3000 with 3000 series CD player and it had a great balanced sound, almost tube like sweet treble.

@Gustavo S. I also had a chance to listen to the bigger stand mount Evoke 20 side by side with Dynaudio Special 40 and Dynaudio Contour 20 (higher up line). From playing a few songs at a dealership I could not tell the difference between the Evoke 20 and Special Forty. The dealer told me they share a lot of the same technology as they do with the higher up line Contour. The Contours 20 were maybe little bit more detailed but not as relaxed treble compared to the Evoke 20.

@Gustavo S. Majority of my favourite music is contemporary and well recored. Contemporary Jazz like Matthew Halsall, Portico Quartet, Go Go Penguin, Mammal Hands. Ambient post classical like Neil Frahms, Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richer, Olafur Arnalds, Luke Howard, Joep Beving. Indie rock like Grizzly Bear Warpaint, Radiohead. Some classical symphonies like Beethoven, Dvorak, Ravel. Wagner overtures. New and old choral music like Voces8, Talis Scholars. I also play older recordings. Jazz from late 50s and early 60s like Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans, Art Blakey, Charles Mingus.70s and 80s rock Velvet Underground, Bauhouse, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees. Some of which are not well recorded.

I did mine in a teal blue with white oak baffles. I need to get another amp.My hafler went belly up. Thinking about outlaw audio receiver but not sure it has the Ooomph. The hafler is 200 wpc. These speakers are my end of the rainbow . They impress me everyone i use them. I think we paid like 800 bucks for the kit plus about 100 in wood. My buddy said he saw some dynaudios at the industry show ( this was about 1992 iirc) and ones speced out like ours would cost about 3-3500 . It took some time and assistance to build the boxes and it was the best audio move i ever made. Happy to this day!
@mikem42145 жыл бұрын
@@Phloored I 'assembled' the full kit including cabinets from Madisound, with the upgraded crossovers and dynamat (?) for additional damping. I forget the full kit price, but I know it was about 40% (inc. tax and delivery) of the comparable retail Dynaudio speaker. You definitely sacrifice re-sale opportunity but if you trust some of the kit companies, and are familiar with some of their drivers (Scan Speak, Seas, Morel, Fostex etc) there is some definite bang for your buck.

I watch this channel all the time, I am a Patreon supporter, and I really appreciate it. However, one of the downsides of these independently run Internet review sites is the ENDLESS parade of small, 2-way bookshelf speakers. This is simply a practical factor. They are inexpensive to ship and easy to setup. I would suggest, however, that a majority of audiophiles listen to larger speakers. I just feel that this substantial audience is not being served.

Thanks for review, very helpful to me and is about the only independent review on line! So... Wow! Went to hear these at my local store and loved them, they are so relaxing to listen to and create a feeling of space - reminiscent of the valve system I had years ago. Was concerned about the sensitivity, because I have a Naim Qute 2 (now discontinued) to drive them and it is only 30w. Fortunately the store had a second hand Qute 1 and they demoed the Evoke 10s with that and it was easily able to drive them to volumes higher than I need - Naim watts > other watts I guess :). Bought some in the white oak finish, definitely those look very modern Scandinavian. So thanks again for timely review.

Thanks for another great review that I've watched half a dozen times. I'm looking at a radical downsize in speakers (post divorce and tiny townhouse) so coming to grips with "cute" speakers. The worst part is all of my local brick and mortar stores are gone, how _do_ people buy online? Ugh. Thanks to guys like you I have a fighting chance. 2 magic points here were _mid-field_ and _low listening levels._ I know so many speakers need to start moving to come alive, one value of small-ish drivers I suppose. My Thiels were 12+ feet away. I've always liked Dynaudio. The Revel M16's also look good, although you did say moderate listening levels. Elac Adante also on the short list (but getting big). Thanks for the video. I just bought a pair of walnut Evoke 10s here in Germany, and really dig their sound and looks. Just a small heads up for anyone thinking about buying Evokes and expecting that all Evoke speakers are still fully made in Denmark. They’re not. When I unboxed mine, I noticed that they have “Made in China” stickers and writing on the back above the binding posts. I checked directly with Dynaudio, and they confirmed that (except for the drivers, which they claim are still made in Denmark) production of the Evokes was moved to China as demand grew. So check with your dealer before ordering if this is important to you.

Thanks, Steve! Great review! I think these speakers may be the next stop on my audiophile journey. I’m currently breaking-in the new-to-me Klipsch RB 600s. I’m still getting used to them. One thing for sure- they are very alive and immediate. I find them most enjoyable on somewhat rough around the edges blues. Now that I think of it, as soon as I’m back home I’m putting on my 180g reissue of Led Zeppelin II 🤩 My original system consists of LS50s driven by the Parasound Halo Integrated paired with REL 212/SE. At the moment, I’m missing something in my system. I could probably get some improvements by playing with the speaker placement some more. The room is large and irregular shape overall close to 25’ x 25’ x 7’6”. The speakers are 4’ into the room and away for side walls. I sit an equal distance from the speakers as they are in the relationship to each other- about 9’ triangle. Perhaps it’s the way the speakers interact with my room. I have the volume, I’m just missing the magic. I had magic many times in a large variety of systems over the years at all sorts of price points. From Andrew Jones’ little Pioneer bookshelf speakers to the KEF Blades based $70K rig I owned for a while. I’m in relentless pursuit of this magic. The excitement of rediscovering my vast music library in analog and digital. Perhaps the little Dynaudio can be the spark I need. I’m vibing with this speaker just like originally did the LS50s when they came out- and they did not disappoint me one bit. Amazing speaker on so many levels that keep on giving. I have to give Dynaudio a serious audition. P.S. For the first time ever in my life I now not only am living a dream of Hi-Fi room, I can actually build up a collection of awesome speakers for any listening mood I may be in at the time. Small Maggies LRS, Elac dual concentric 6” bookshelf, and the above reviewed Dynaudios make the shot list of the next stops for me. Maybe some Harbeths- never experienced their flavor.

Evoke 10 or 20 ? I hope 20 can be better for low volume listening (because of more pronounced bass = built in loudness). I never listen loud, so most important things for me are ability to play quiet and fluid, natural sound with no harshness, not tiring, not too much upper mids (I can't stand aggresive sax or violin, ringing highs make me tinitus). I'm looking for airy, detailed, but partly forgiving pleasant speakers exceling in reproduction of acoustic music, classic, opera and human voices, but able to swing and dance with jazz and rock music too. I want to pair them with Marantz PM7000N (very good reviews and I like possibility to play from USB disc, streaming and internet radios). Small room (

Hi Steve, have you ever tried the Totem acoustic Arro tower speaker? Did you like it? I live in a small condo and I'm tempted to get that speaker and I have Conrad-Johnson electronics. Any thoughts? Steve? Anyone?

A B sure, but I reviewed them probably 15 years ago! Heard Arros at a friend’s apartment recently, still wonderful

had an old pair of dynaudio that i loved and upgraded to mk2 version and the sound was totally screwed from the original so never went with them again.. wonder if they learned with time not to destroy a model with crappy upgrade.. i thought they had to be deaf to do such a thing..
@Taffy845 жыл бұрын
More like near same price as SCM11 not 12. I use SCM11 as my desktop speakers and they cost me $2,300.00 CAD which is $1,731.53 USD.

I’ve been very pleased with my Yamaha A-S801 integrated amp driving my B & W DM640s. At 100 watts/channel it might be more than you need for a bedroom system but on the other hand, if you move the system to the garage it’s nice to have plenty of headroom.

I don't care how "good" they sound; I'm never getting low-efficiency speakers again. At least not until I win the lottery and can afford "good" high-power amps. But when I win the lottery, I'll buy some great speakers which are higher efficiency, because they sound more "real" and "live" to me. IMO..
@Audfile5 жыл бұрын
$1800 will buy you prebuilt, world class, Hypex Ncore Nc400s, 500 watts per side, 4 watts at idle. Your jaw will be on the floor at the sound quality from whisper on up.
@BirdArvid5 жыл бұрын
@@Audfile Yes, I'm thinking about building some Class D power-amps; first for a sub, then for everything! But it doesn't really change the sound from high-efficiency speakers; they're just more "real"
@Audfile5 жыл бұрын
@@BirdArvid don't just build "class D". They aren't all the same. Just like AB amps aren't all the same. Build Ncores. Then come back here and thank me ;)

With an 80 wpc amp you can easily reach 100 db at 2m, even more in nearfield environment... Honestly for music listeners even a 60 wpc amp can drive them there absolutely fine .

A couple of minutes of playing music with the item you're reviewing would help heaps. Perhaps, you choose one very high quality piece of music and play it with each speaker / amplifier etc you've got at hand. And yes, ..I know the old argument of "sound quality through Y.T. " etc. etc. but it's always better than nothing. For those of us who listen to your clips with h/phones it will help make some idea of the nature of the speaker.
