It looks slow because OP's PC can't run the game at proper speed. If you look up other videos of the earliest demo you'll see that the game began as fast and just got faster.

I find it really interesting how none of the level design here made it to the final game, even if the level themes themselves stayed. Some gameplay elements here even contain a kind of precision platforming that doesn't even exist at all in the final game. This is a good lesson in game design - the game's creator saw all these different aspects and thought "this isn't good enough," and threw it all out to replace it with something better.

I watched a video of that. it was full of flashing snowman graphics that if you touched, I'm guessing either sent you back or just killed you, never happened in the video so I never saw what it would do. the point of the grinch race was for the winner to send a screenshot of the end screen over Discord and get free Patreon demo access.

Its insane how slow the early builds were, I had to speed up the video to 1.75 to feel closer to the original game since the current speed was making me physically uncomfortable. Im glad the game got built the way it did starting in the SAGE 2019 version because if not the game would not have been the masterpiece we know of today

i’m so glad they changed the momentum system in the final game. this old system looks like it’s impossible to keep a consistent pace. running looks super clunky. and whether it be the more cramped level design, or with how Peppino controls and how much harder it is to build up and maintain speed, it does not look very good. needless to say, i’m glad they changed this in the SAGE Demo and refined it in the final game. makes me wonder how they thought this original gameplay style was a good idea in the first place, but i guess that’s why it’s a demo and not the full game.

i think the reason it runs so slow is because every tile/platform/collision block is its own entity. in the full game the collision blocks are scaled up and down so they dont have to use 1 for every tile, and the tiles were made into their own layer instead of being their own objects.

What's wild to me is that it's clearly not lag, the original versions were meant to run this slow. However, that could also be due to the direct inspiration from Wario Land as the earlier games started out far more slow and methodical before Wario Land 4 came along and emphasized speed.
