In which I discover the extreme sonic joy that the is Rohde & Schwarz UBM amplifier/filter.
The Rohde & Schwarz UBM is a mystical creature - it was made for telephone line checking and misused by Stockhausen in many works, first and foremost Kontakte, and has been very well kept studio secret for acid and techno artists. It can make beautiful resonances and earth-shaking bass drums. It turns anything into a sound monster and has beefed up countless TB-303s, especially in the Netherlands, were knowledge of test equipment is spread way more. I hunted three months for one, and it was well worth it. The timbres you get are very acoustic, they can sound like early electronic music but also like the monster bass drums and tones you get hit with at Berghain. Price range can be as low as 100EUR and as high as 350EUR, but there are many people already hunting for these even before I made this video, so don't "RIP second hand prices" me.

Hainbach, I think you stumbled onto a very famous classic synthesizer tone of the 60s at 12:30... It sounds to my ears in memory exactly like the electronic sounds at the beginning of the old Supremes track You Keep Me Hanging On. The minute I heard your instruments with that particular tone it just popped in my head and knocked me over! You are correct this piece of vintage equipment is amazing! Peace, Bob

Random Question: Do you need to alter a Breul & Kjaer 1022 BFO in order to use it in studio or is there a certain mixer/amp set up that's safe?
@daccrowell4776
@daccrowell4776 5 жыл бұрын
@@AllenSmithe I think I can answer that...if you keep the output attenuator at levels no higher than -20 dB into a typical mixer line preamp, everything should be just fine. At the -20 dB setting, your output into a 600 ohm load should be 1.2 V RMS, which is pretty close to typical pro line levels. However, for some overloading fun, if you have a compressor that can handle the 4 V RMS signal at its input, try mashing the hell out of that signal for some nasty waveshaped/overdriven fun. Also, a quick tip about the output connection: if you leave a single banana plug in place in that bayonet socket, you can then easily connect a Pomona MDP dual banana to that and the ground point.

Craziest thing is that somebody could have done this all in in 1979. It just took 40 years for somebody to get the perspective to do it (and the financial means to get a whole rack full of what was incredibly expensive industrial grade lab equipment).

Wow!!! Making a track entirely with vintage high-end lab testing equipment instead of actual synthesizers. That is very impressive and sounds AMAZING!!!! It does remind me of some of the electronic musical soundtracks from 70's scifi movies. With that said, this equipment has all of the basic components that make up a synthesizer such as oscillators and filters. Great work!!!!

I think test equipment is the end of the road for synth nerds. We all start with soft synths usually.. then some fairly inexpensive hardware synths, then it goes off the rails from there: Eurorack, then some 4u, and then test equipment because it’s the most avant-garde and interesting... using stuff not designed for making music.. but making amazing music and sounds with it. What he did with this in the vid.. that track at the end. GENIUS

Thank you for referencing Stockhausen. I suppose it is inevitable to reference the 20th century masters when using the same equipment as they. Possibly one of the greatest filters ever, never duplicated, never emulated. I would advise putting it in its correct position, though; the tubes inside are in something of an odd mounting configuration and there might be some heat buildup concerns over a long period of use with the device oriented that way.
