In this video, i break down the best music theory for music producers and beat makers. Its so simple because it relies on numbers only.
This system is called the Nashville numbers system. This system labels every note and chord in the scale with a number. So music theory for music producers just got easier!
Starting on the root note of your scale, the Nashville numbers system labels each note from 1 to 7. And labels each chord from 1 to 7.
First you need to know how to make a basic chord or TRIAD. Start on the root note of the chord, count up to the fourth note and place the middle note of the chord here. Next, count up three more notes from here and place the final note there. This is a major triad. To make a minor triad, place the middle note in the chord, one note lower.
If your DAW has a scale highlighting feature, enable it. Now you can simply Place your root note, skip a note and place your middle note, then skip one more note to place the final note. This is my preferred method.
Now that you know how to make chords, you can use the Nashville numbers system to make a chord progression. Start by laying out the root notes of your chord progression. Then follow the system to lay out your chords by counting up four notes, then three notes. Or by skipping every other note with the scale highlighted.
Now you know the Nashville numbers system and you know how to make your own chord progressions from scratch, or by following chords that are already written down.

I’m really glad you were able to find some value from this video. My next one will be a similar video but about how to easily layout your scales without music theory! Are there any topics that I can cover in a video for you?

That’s awesome! I’m glad you found this video helpful! Im looking to start learning piano specifically so I can produce quicker. Are you using any specific sources? Or just KZbin videos?

@@djcontour I find the pianolearning subreddit to be helpful when I’m stuck but mostly have been self teaching with youtube videos from pianote, jazer lee channels and “become a piano superhuman”. I try for an hour per day of practice.

thanks for the tutorial. The last 2 triads were minors but how would you know that without the daw highlighting the correct notes?

So I just noticed that it’s a quicker way to realize that. Earlier in the video I explained how to make major and minor chords by counting the spaces between the notes. So for a major chord, between the first two notes, you skip 3 notes and the second not of the chord goes on the 4th note. In minor, you skip 2 notes and place on the 3rd. You can use this to build any chord on any root note. To know if it’s in your scale, you’ll actually need to know the notes of your scale! I’ll be making a video about how to find the notes in your scale simply by counting the notes very soon!!

Thankyou for the explanation. I understand the count 3 and 4 aspect, what my question is is why were the second two chords minors and not majors like the first? why were all four chords not majors? Why does the root note of certain chords result in minor chords like this?@@djcontour

@justsayin644 Oh! My apologies for misunderstanding your question. The reason the second two were minor is solely because of the scale. In the second two chords, if we followed the theme of counting up 4 for the second note, the middle notes of each chord wouldn’t have been in the current scale. Then you wouldn’t figure that out until playing it back and noticing that it sounds wrong. By using the scale highlighters and just skipping the next note of the scale, yoy always ensure that the notes of your chords are in the current scale and they will automatically be major or minor. It’s basically just where the notes of the chord land so that they are in the scale of the song. Becuase each scale only contains specific chords, A different scale will yield different results. I hope this was able to clarify it for you?
