About 10 years ago I built a 12X14 shed out of rough sawn wood. The frame is 4X4 drilled and pegged with oak pegs. The floor joist are 2X12 with a 15 inch center.. The outside walls are 1 X10 done in board and batten style. It was all done with green cut wood. So that when the wood dried it would grip the fasteners.

As a general contractor in Ohio and later exterior remodeling contractor in Minnesota I offer some suggestions: Grandpa should be cherished as a family jewel; get him some help preferably a family member to pass his knowledge onto. i used to call the local shop teacher and asked for their best students for the job. Some worked summers for 2-3 years and all were excellent and no duds. That flimsy ladder is an accident waiting to happen. Get a class lll 8ft. Buy a cordless nail gun. Small investment to keep grandpa safe. On the bay window we used to bend flashing on all four angled corners for leak protection the cover with wood siding and no sealant needed. Again cherish grandpa and give him all the help he can use whether or not he wants it. He is truly a family treasure who will pass a tremendous amount of knowledge the rest of you. God bless you all!!!

I think they do Cherish Grandpa. however everyone is maxed out on the work they can do. While they would like the siding put on this building, it is not a rush or priority job. As you may have noted, Emerald has sold materials that were meant for this project.... Grandpa is likely similar to my Dad and needs something to do: this is something he can work on as he feels like it. I get confused in the classes of ladders. Google says a class lll ladder is a home owners ladder. I think that is what this ladder is. Grandpa seems to be doing fine with it. I would not be able to use it myself and would have to get a better ladder.

Get a string approximately the length of the boards you plan to hang. Attach a weight (stone) to one end and make a loop on the other end. For each board to be hung, tack in a nail at the top of the green wall, and attach the string loop. The string should be taut and will serve as a reference hanging the board.

I worked my way through college in the dark ages on a siding crew that was me and the master carpenter. We did all kinds of siding, facia, and sofit work. And cussed the framers who couldn't build a wall vertical or horizontal at times. I have great admiration for Grandpa after seeing him run siding by himself! That is just miserable hard and slow. Here's to Grandpa and I hope that someday you tell us his real name.

Hey. Hey. Hey. We are back into the day. Cutting it on the side. Siding that is. Doing it with pride. Hemlock siding just gives it a country feel. Like what was cut down is making a happy appeal. Wood is good when it's treated. Like saying, hey, my country wants you to meet it. Hemlock siding will last for years. If it could, with all the time that passes it wood shed with joy, happy tears. Speaking of sheds. It could go there too (siding, I mean). Also on a garage or two. I don't mean to tell you something you already know. Just putting a little friendly reminder on the side. Capital Lumber Log Yard sells it with pride.

Emerald. Two hands on that job is like being a one handed sawmill operator. Grandpa is really a good man, especially with that bay windows that, "is worth it." I don't know if you have ever had a car with a weak battery. Runs great during the day but will need a jump if you run headlights very much. That is old age and your grandpa is not slow, just steady. At 75, I need a nap every day and then the afternoon is fine. BTW. one day of extra hands could save 4 to 6 days on that project.

Em, your grandfather sounded a little winded. Please help him and pamper him. These hot days are hard on our elders, ask me how l know: I'm 72. Cool clear water is the best hydration. Also, there are cooling towels you wet and wear around your neck. I even have an ice wrap that holds normal everyday plain old ice cubes in a plastic tube that fits in a towel sewn into a tube, for my neck. It makes a huge difference in how much energy the heat takes out of me. Only hoping to help. Thank you Jade, hiding behind the camera, for your diligent control of the recording. ben/ michigan

That siding is making the building look a lot better!! so the barn siding is finally rotting after 200 years. That is what I was not clear on from before. Some old things like that, the lumber is OK but the nails rust off! Which is what I was expecting with your barn.

Those 1x10s really do look sharp! I appreciate granpas attention to detail as well. Did he use a sliding T-bevel to figure the odd angles? Or an old style way that they used to use way back when? It’s tough while you’re building it, but boy is it satisfying to stand back and admire it when you’re done 🙂

Well that siding looks amazing! I wish we were allowed to have that here in San Diego! Due to the high fire risk we have to have non combustible materials like hardy board or stucco and the latest is insurance company’s are requiring boxed in eves and ember vents. Crazy what we are having to go through here for fire safety stuff.
