I combine the last way with larynx (throat) control. By allowing your larynx move as if you are singing you can play your harmonics off each note with much greater accuracy. This allows you to play with much greater confidence as your flute will play the note you desire instead of a harmonic an octave up

Nice video, as a physiologist I feel obligated to make one correction. You do not get dizzy because of getting too much oxygen to the brain, but because of being deprived of oxygen. Exhaling more (losing air as you put it) increases the amount of CO2 expelled from the blood via the lungs, so blood CO2 decreases, which makes O2 bind stronger to haemoglobin. It effectively means that O2 gets stuck in the blood - it won't release into the tissues as easily, so the cells have less oxygen as oxygen accumulates in the blood - where one does not technically need it. One way to complement preventing that is to focus on slow and especially nasal breathing whenever possible. Many flutists will prefer mouth breathing for various reasons, however, whenever you have the time, it is advisable to thrown in nasal inhales to prevent dizziness and contribute to relaxation in the cardiovascular system, which will benefit overall tone quality. Nasal breathing is slower, so one accumulates more CO2 (widens blood vessels, allows O2 offload from the blood) and it induces nitric oxide, which also widens blood vessels.
@JaneFluteSchool4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Hannes! I'm glad you have corrected me. I will never say "because you're brain is getting too much oxygen" again! I appreciate your explanation. Jane

Hi Jane Nikki here, Sydneysider now living in Scotland!!! Thanks so much for this insight. Hello! I have a tip for teaching how to play high notes. I recommend that you should add that instead of blowing harder, students should make a smaller hole, which automatically brings your lips forward. It was hard for me to understand when you said we should bring our lips forward, so my teacher taught me to make a smaller hole in my lips, which makes the air faster. Thank you so much for what you do!

Thanks for this and the other videos on embouchure. I am a saxophonist doubling on flute and they helped me realise I was not focusing the air enough, I was trying to play so relaxed that the air was getting too diffuse and I couldn't aim it at all. Would be interested to hear the other exercises you have for developing that way of playing. It's quite analogous to saxophone in that you have different ways of (somewhat) achieving similar ends but one is basically superior. With saxophone it would be biting the reed vs. using your throat and tongue position to change air speed. I guess with the flute everything is just moved down so it becomes moving lips forward to change air speed vs 'biting' the lips. Cheers
@JaneFluteSchool8 жыл бұрын
Hey Eddd (cool name!), I'm glad you sound like you're getting better at focus the airstream. It definitely is step 1 is getting a better (less diffuse) sound! Jane

An easy way to play high note is to raise the back (root) of your tongue like when you pronounce the 'ng' sound in 'sing' and keep it there. It is also similar to the way you bend the note when playing a diatonic Harmonica. For some holes, just by moving the tongue root back and forth, you may be able to play more notes (I think it is called over blowing).
@JaneFluteSchool2 жыл бұрын

Is there any tips or tricks to play really high notes (like the D in a 3 octave D major scale)
@JaneFluteSchool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ada, yes there is! But it's not a quick fix I'm afraid. It does help long term though! Get really good at the technique in this video for "not-so-high" high notes (like E3 up to A3) and you'll gradually (and automatically) get better at the higher high notes too. Jane

wow that tip was amazing Thank you so much I am doing it in a bansuri flute but I am still straggling with the top highest notes :( . The highest from the bottom are good, but when I play the top ones I can't make them sound good

That's great that the tip was helpful Jery. Just keep working to gradually be able to play a little higher on the flute, a bit at a time - it takes time to get up to the very high notes comfortably.

Hello again, Jane. After 3 months, I can now see I am using a mix of the second and third way... and it is kinda frustrating. Specifically, up to about a middle G, I can get the note out by simply using the third technique, but when I get to the A and above, I find I also have to make the hole in my lips smaller to get the note, which you do say it should be done, to some extent, but sometimes I feel I am overdoing it. The main issue, besides getting tired more easily, is that it is not consistent. At times the notes come out, other times don't, and I find it is very much related to my mouth's position in relation to the lip plate (down to a matter of millimetres I would say). Ironically, I find the high notes are (at least the D, E and F) much easier to come out. Incidentally, as you mentioned clarinet players, did they find their clarinet embochure got in the way of their flute one? I have been learning both and I find that, after I have been playing the clarinet for a while, my flute embochure is a right mess, as in I cannot round up my lips as much and get a very airy sound. This would last for maybe a few minutes to a good hour. I presume it is because, on a clarinet, you do the exact opposite of a flute, that is have your lips super flat and tight around the mouthpiece.

Hi there! One of my flute playing friends recently picked up the clarinet for fun. She found that after she played the clarinet, even for just 5 minutes, her embouchure was quite worn out and tired. She would need a break from the instruments before trying to play the flute. It's hard to go from one to another when first starting out. So you're definitely not alone! If you haven't done so yet, check out my free 3 day mini course on tone on the flute. Hopefully this will help with your flute embouchure. 😀 Here's the link in case you're interested. www.flute.school/free

I'll have to try out the 3rd way! I always have trouble with the high E natural for some reason. I can play the high E flat, high F, and even the high G (I'm working on the high A). But the E natural has always been sort of hard to get out. Thank you!
@JaneFluteSchool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Brooke Emma Nicole! You're not alone - the high E on the flute is very "unstable" meaning it will drop down to the lower note if you don't have great control of your embouchure. Some flutes have a "split E mechanism" which makes the high E much easier. But don't worry if your flute doesn't have it - when you can play high E well, you'll know it's because you have great technique! Jane :)
